The return of the bison to a small region in Romania has positively impacted the community living there in the last few years.

The reintroduction of this mighty beast has attracted many visitors, supported nature-based businesses, and empowered the local community to share their pride in conservation initiatives.

We had the opportunity to talk to Matei Miculescu, our trusted local guide during our Bison Tracking trips and a ranger for WWF-Romania.

🚨NEW TRIP ALERT
Be one of only four photographers in May or June to join Bulgarian wildlife photographer Bogdan Boev Wildlife Photography on a photo expedition to the spectacular Rhodope Mountains and wetlands of the Thracian Plain.

These two varied Bulgarian landscapes are home to a haven for raptors such as Golden eagle, Eastern imperial eagle, Saker falcon, Griffon, Egyptian and the recently reintroduced Cinereous vulture. The remote and rugged mountains and canyons of the Rhodopes are a regional stronghold of wolf and jackal populations with bears also returning and thriving.

This photo expedition is a mixture of hide-based photography and day hikes to spectacular wildlife locations that Bogdan has identified over many years of photographing in the region.

Your guide Bogdan Boev is a passionate photographer that is involved in nature conservation causes and spreading the word about rewilding. Through his photography, he tells the success stories of wildlife comeback and flourishing landscapes in Bulgaria.

🐢REWILDING IN PAUL DE TOIROES
We want to introduce some of Rewilding Portugal 's operational landscapes where rewilding is taking place, which you will visit during our Portuguese trips.

The most recent area to be managed by Rewilding Portugal is close to the border with Spain.

Due to the cease of mining activity, the area has now some of the largest water surfaces in the entire Côa Valley. This water is distributed in lagoons, canals, and permanent and temporary ponds, all interconnected by seasonally flooded wetlands where aquatic and riverine vegetation grows. A young forest of black oak, holm oak and cypresses populates the rest of the area. Biodiversity comprises rich communities of aquatic flora and fauna, beautiful striped-shelled tortoises and black stork.

The plans for Paul de Toirões are facilitating access and reducing the risk to wildlife, increasing the area of flooding and promoting forest diversification with native species. 🦅REWILDING IN ERMO DAS ÁGUIAS
We want to introduce some of Rewilding Portugal 's operational landscapes where rewilding is taking place, which you will visit during our Portuguese trips.

On the west bank of the Côa River, at Ermo das Águias we say goodbye to the gentle slopes that flanked the river, and welcome a landscape of rugged cliffs that lead to the Douro River.

The landscape is dominated by bushes and rocks due to soil conditions, but also due to the impact of fire and overgrazing in recent centuries.

But the process of rewilding can already be seen in the groves of black oak, and in the small holm oaks and cork oaks that appear.
Meadows are recovering their characteristic flora, which had disappeared due to overgrazing. The cliffs are regularly visited by some of the most emblematic birds of the region, such as the golden eagle, the black stork and the griffon vulture.

Rewilding Portugal is encouraging the planning of tourism activities and walking routes, supported by the recently opened Rewilding Center.

🌿REWILDING IN VALE CARAPITO
We want to introduce some of Rewilding Portugal 's operational landscapes where rewilding is taking place, which you will visit during our Portuguese trips.

North of the historic village of Vilar Maior, Vale Carapito displays a diverse mosaic of natural habitats, irrigated by the Cesarão river and the Alfaiates stream. Mixed forests of hardwoods and softwoods, scrub, and dry and wet meadows, create conditions for the existence of animals and plants with very different ecological requirements.

Marked by an agricultural past, dry stone walls and ruins of water mills are now traversed by the roots of large alders, ash and various species of oak.

A herd of Sorraia horses was introduced into Vale Carapito with the aim of replicating the role of its ancestors in the ecosystem, mainly through grazing, having a positive effect on the communities of insects, small birds, amphibians and reptiles that inhabit the area

Rewilding Portugal continues to build new economic opportunities for the local community through nature-based tourism.

🐻Do you know what a bear corridor is?

In Europe, 4 of the 10 populations of brown bear are assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. The Apennines are home to the Marsican brown bear which is a critically endangered subspecies.

LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors aim to improve conditions for bears by linking national parks in the Italian region. Ultimately, this will allow the bears to expand their range into new areas.

Local communities will learn to live alongside the iconic brown bear and prevent conflict between bears and humans.
By removing any potential source that could attract bears to urban areas, and by developing ways for communities to benefit from this iconic species in their region, people living here will become ambassadors for the area’s wild nature and nature-based enterprises working in tourism spread awareness about the work being done with world travelers.
