How tech solutions can help in reducing overtourism 🌎❤️

EDIT Project team promotes the implementation of tech solutions to overcome major tourism problems. Overtourism is a growing issue in many popular tourist destinations. It can lead to a number of negative consequences, such as overcrowding, pollution, and damage to fragile ecosystems, even more if associated with fenomena of climate change. 😥

Technology can play a role in reducing overtourism and its negative impacts, as for examples:

- Real-time crowd monitoring 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️: Sensors and artificial intelligence can be used to monitor tourist flows in real time. This information can then be used to divert visitors away from overcrowded areas and towards less popular destinations. 🗺️
- Dynamic pricing 💰: Variable pricing can be used to encourage visitors to travel during off-peak times or to less popular destinations. 🏝️

We have reached some important conclusions regarding inclusive and accessible tourism. Here's what we've learned:

1️⃣ It is crucial for the tourism industry to understand and cater to the needs and preferences of diverse populations. Technology and innovation can play a significant role in breaking down barriers, and collaboration with advocacy organizations and travel agents specialized in serving diverse populations is essential.

2️⃣ Ensuring accessible transportation is key to creating an inclusive tourism experience. Strategies such as universal design, technology utilization, and collaboration with local communities can make transportation more convenient and accessible for everyone.

3️⃣ Technology and innovation have the potential to greatly enhance inclusive and accessible tourism experiences. Augmented reality, mobile applications, AI, and virtual reality can create better experiences for all travelers while addressing barriers and providing solutions for individuals with disabilities and diverse backgrounds.

4️⃣ Inclusive experiences are essential in the tourism industry. Cultural experiences, adventure travel, and other forms of tourism can be designed to be more inclusive and accessible by shifting attitudes, planning inclusive events, and incorporating universal design principles.

5️⃣ Training and education play a crucial role in creating inclusive and accessible tourism experiences. 🔒 Security needs a broader perspective, including services like transportation, to address the trust of travelers. Traveler participation is vital, differentiating actual and perceived safety. However, technology carries risks like data breaches.

📲 Our new clients expect digitalization, necessitating clear definitions of digital skills for workforce implementation and specialized tourist experiences. Let's share relevant materials to upskill industry workers. While heritage and cultural tourism may face job losses, the human touch is irreplaceable, and systems like customer relations management enhance the experience.

🌱 Digitalization expands tourism in unsustainable ways like over-tourism, but it can also drive sustainability efforts. We must focus on sustainable recovery, invest in innovative, carbon-neutral solutions, and measure the impact of sustainable tourism using sustainable energy sources. During our insightful Round Table discussion, several key conclusions were reached regarding successful sustainable tourism practices. Here are the highlights:

2️⃣ The goal of sustainable tourism is to make efficient use of natural resources, reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and simultaneously preserve local communities, cultures, and stimulate economic growth.

3️⃣ Embracing technology modifications can help businesses become more sustainable, leading to positive impacts on their bottom line.

4️⃣ Frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the EU Recovery and Resilience Plans provide guidance to achieve sustainable tourism.

5️⃣ Sustainable tourism contributes to employment, income, state revenues, and infrastructure improvements while also benefiting government services.

3. Strengthen partner organizations' capacity to design high-quality training content, considering its impact on target areas and tourism stakeholders.
4. Lay the foundation for a common and innovative model of tourism training for sustainable socio-

The 15th February 2023 we celebrated the first online round table of our project EDIT- Eco, Digital, Inclusive Tourism. The aim was to discuss on the most challenging aspects of Sustainable Tourism and its future opportunities. Some conclusions were the following:

• Successful sustainable tourism refers to responsible tourism practices that respect the environment, society, and economy. Key pillars of sustainable tourism include environmental sustainability, social sustainability, and economic sustainability.
• Sustainable tourism aims to make a wise use of natural resources and reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions while preserving the local community and culture and promoting economic growth.
• Technology modifications can help businesses become sustainable and save resources, leading to a positive impact on the bottom line.
• The UN SDGs and the EU Recovery and Resilience Plans provide frameworks to achieve sustainable tourism.
• Sustainable tourism contributes to rising figures of employment, income, state revenues, and the amelioration of infrastructure and government services.
• Challenges facing sustainable tourism include balancing economic growth with environmental and social sustainability, educating stakeholders, ensuring implementation of sustainable tourism practices, encouraging citizen participation, achieving absolute decoupling, combating seasonality, establishing partnerships and governance frameworks, and recovering degraded resources.
• Capacity building activities such as training programs and workshops on sustainable tourism are necessary to include stakeholders in sustainable tourism strategies.
• A holistic approach requires the participation of all stakeholders to guarantee the success of the proposal.
