[ What is the Sea of Cortez? Where is the Sea of Cortez? ]
The Sea of Cortez (also commonly called the Gulf of California) is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean located between Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and the country’s mainland. The total coastline of the Sea of Cortez is approximately 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) and its total surface area is approximately 160,000 square kilometers (62,000 square miles).

[ Things to Do in the Sea of Cortez ]
Whether you are searching for deep sea diving or simply trying to relax on the beach, you’ll find no shortage of things to do in the Sea of Cortez. On land, the sea’s thousands of miles of coastline feature hundreds of pristine beaches, hilly landscapes, and other amazing geological features. Beachside retreats, nature hikes, and off-road adventures are all excellent activities to enjoy on the shores of the Sea of Cortez. On the sea itself, sailing, kayaking, and water sports are great choices for those who prefer warm, calm waters. However, when it comes to water activities, snorkeling and scuba diving reign supreme in the Sea of Cortez. That’s because this unique body of water is home to thousands of rare and amazing marine wildlife species. You can learn more about wildlife in the Sea of Cortez in the following section.

[ Bahia Concepcion, MulegΓ© ]
Bahia Concepcion isn’t one beach so much as an area filled with beaches. Coming to MulegΓ© from the north, you pass miles of stunning waters and bay after bay of pristine white sands: this is Bahia Concepcion, where you could easily spend several weeks exploring each patch of dreamy sand. There is no public transport here, making it a hub for Mexican beach campers who come to enjoy the sun, set up their tents and fire up the barbecue.

[ Playa Ensenada Grande, Espiritu Santo Island ]
If you’ve made it to La Paz, chances are you’ve heard of Espiritu Santo Island; the home of epic kayaking, up-close encounters with sea lions and some of the most spectacular beaches in Baja South. Every beach on this island is dreamy, but Playa Ensenada Grande probably takes first prize. Come early if you want the beach to yourself though camping here – either on a multi-day kayaking adventure or overnight camping trip – is the best choice.

[ Balandra, La Paz ]
Probably one of the most famous beaches in Baja California, Balandra is a must-see for any La Paz visitor, with miles of shallow turquoise water, blinding white sand backed by mountains and lush, green oases. When you arrive, you may be a little disappointed by the crowds, particularly at weekends. Despair not, this place is huge. The further you walk from the main car park, the thinner the crowd. Go far enough – up and over the Balandra lookout point – and you may even get one of these magical coves to yourself for some beach camping in Mexico. Bring your own supplies for the day, though, as you won’t see any sellers past the busy points.

3 THINGS TO DO IN LA BAJA

[ SHOP FOR MEXICAN ART ]
Mexican art is bright, bold and beautiful and Baja is home to many galleries and studios.
Specialising in ceramics, glass, oils, tapestry, watercolours one-off traditional and contemporary treasures are hard to resist especially when most galleries offer a painless and easy-on-the-pocket shipping service.
A must for art lovers is the small seaside village of Todos Santos (between Cabo and La Paz). Untouched by mass tourism, the population is a mix of artisan creative talent.

[ LA PAZ WHALE SHARKS ]
Surrounded by tiny islands (Islas), the state capital La Paz is perfect for underwater sports. A 20-minute fast boat ride gets you amongst the giants of the ocean. Snorkelling alongside whale sharks, creatures the size of a bus, is surprisingly calming and totally exhilarating (once you realise they really aren’t the slightest bit interested in eating you).

[ SEA OF CORTEZ ]
Apart from snorkelling and diving, the calm water of the Sea of Cortez is a perfect place to learn how to sea kayak or paddleboard. There’s nothing quite like seeing a humpback whale breaching from water level and if you’re lucky you might even spot a blue whale.

[ Mexico is Latin America’s most visited tourist destination ]
According to the World Tourism Organization reports, Mexico is the Latin American country with the highest number of international visitors and is ranked #10 worldwide. This comes as no surprise given the diversity Mexico has to offer in terms of culture and nature. 32 locations in the country have been awarded as World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Once again, Mexico leads the ranking in the American Continent in this category as well being placed #6 worldwide.

[ Mexican cuisine is officially World Cultural Heritage ]
Tacos, enchiladas and of course picante – traditional Mexican cuisine is unique in its diversity and is appreciated far beyond national borders.
In 2010, the UNESCO added Mexican cuisine to the list of Immaterial World Cultural Heritage. Mexican cuisine roots date back from colonial times where Spanish cuisine met native preparations thus creating a unique blend. Indigenous ingredients include corn, avocado, beans, cocoa and many more. In Mexico, there are 64 different varieties of corn. No other country in the world can claim such diversity.

[ Mexico City was built on a lake – The city sinks around 12cm annually ]
In fact, the lakes over which Mexico City is built on are called cenotes. Aztecs chose this place as a sacred location for building The Great Tenochtitlan; their capital city. Later on, the Spaniards decided to build their city on top of the Aztec constructions giving birth to a new city, a New Spain which later on became Mexico City.
The Texcoco Lake is nearly dry nowadays, however; some of the city buildings remind of the Leaning Tower of Pisa for the capital city underground is muddy and is constantly sinking. It sinks around 12 cm per year, more than the Italian City of Venice which sinks around 2mm annually.

Whale sharks - the largest fish in the ocean and return every winter to the waters of the Bay of La Paz. Swimming with these gentle giants can be the perfect end to a dive trip or island outing.

From early winter until late spring, the whale sharks can be found feeding in the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez and in the Bay of La Paz in Baja California Sur. The gentle giants of the sea are the largest fish in the world, and each season return to the waters close to the city of La Paz. Seeing these ocean behemoths in their natural environment or swimming close to these fish can be an exciting outing for young and old. Island tour boats that visit the Isla Espiritu Santos or the sea lion colony at Los Islotes often close the trip with a whale shark encounter.

[ Almejas Chocolatas Tatemadas (Chocolate Clams) ]
This mouthwatering delicacy consists of locally harvested chocolate clams which are roasted on a bed of stones and covered with romerillo, an edible shrub found in the desert. The shells are roughly 2-ΒΎ inches large and feature meaty clams inside. This recipe is typically served with warm flour tortillas and a variety of salsas and is one of the most iconic regional dishes in Baja California.

[ Tacos de Pescado (Fish Tacos) ]
Perhaps the dish most commonly associated with Baja California, tasty battered fish (and shrimp!) tacos are a mainstay of the diet here and are typically accompanied with delicious salsas. You can find local taco stands just about everywhere you go, and they are a featured item on many sit-down restaurants as well, so you can feed your craving no matter when it strikes!

[ Machaca de Mantarraya (Stingray) ]
Don’t let the name keep you from trying it! A local favorite, this delectable dish is prepared with shredded stingray meat simmered and seasoned with diced tomatoes, green chiles, onion, cilantro and native spices. It is served wrapped in a warm flour tortilla, similar to a burrito and is one of the favorite regional dishes in Baja California among locals.

1) Portrait of the Deceased and Images of Saints:
A photo of the deceased for which the altar is paying tribute is placed at the top and in the middle of the altar. Images of saints serve as reminders of their role as intermediaries between the living, the dead and the β€œbeyond.”

2) Food and Beverages:
The altar will include beverages, dishes and casseroles that the deceased enjoyed on earth. In addition to pleasing the departed, this element helps to recall memorable aspects of the deceased, and often include pulque, liquor, chocolate, tequila, wine or posole, a drink made from corn and honey.

3) Salt:
It is believed that during the journey of the afterlife, the salt will prevent the body of the departed from breaking down as it travels along the winding road to eternity.

CHILAQUILES
This popular traditional breakfast dish features lightly fried corn tortillas cut into quarters and topped with green or red salsa (the red is slightly spicier). Scrambled or fried eggs and pulled chicken are usually added on top, as well as cheese and cream. Chilaquiles are often served with a healthy dose of frijoles (refried beans).

MOLE
There are myriad types of mole but all contain around 20 or so ingredients, including one or more varieties of chilli peppers, and all require constant stirring over a long period of time. Perhaps the best-known mole is mole poblano, a rusty red sauce typically served over turkey or chicken.

TAMALES
Pockets of corn dough are stuffed with either a sweet or savoury filling, wrapped in banana leaves or corn husks, then steamed.
