💎WHY IS ELLA SO IMPORTANT
It's a place where Sri Lanka's colonial heritage coexists with its rich Sinhalese and Tamil culture, and where abundant natural experiences can be found alongside plentiful cultural ones
Tucked away in the misty Sri Lankan high country, amongst idyllic green hills and gushing waterfalls lies Ella: one of this tear-shaped island's most appealing destinations.
From scaling the heady heights of Ella Rock to laying eyes on the mystical Nine Arch Bridge for the very first time; standing on the edge of the roaring Diyaluma Falls (the second tallest in the country), and winding through the tea plantations and mountains passes on the famous Kandy to Ella train; many of our favourite Sri Lankan adventures can be found right here.
At its heart, Ella is a charming and laid-back village perfect for relaxing, hiking and escaping the searing temperatures of the southern coast.
It's a place where Sri Lanka's colonial heritage coexists with its rich Sinhalese and Tamil culture, and where abundant natural experiences can be found alongside plentiful cultural ones. And it's a place where learning to cook delicious Sri Lankan cuisine is an absolute must (NOM!).
We do have to warn you, that this once simple hamlet in the hills has transformed into a major tourist stop since our first visit in 2016.
Growing in popularity and in size has led to a number of concrete eyesores now dotting every corner of the village, which has taken away some of the peaceful, rural charms that made the area so incredible.
But there’s still so much to see and do in Ella - if you’re willing to go deeper than just the touristy pretty sights and epic landscapes.
After two visits to this lush hill-country village, we've put together our list of the best things to do in Ella, Sri Lanka; a town we feel should be firmly embedded on your Sri Lankan itinerary.

මීදුමෙන් වැසී ගිය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ උස් රටෙහි, මනරම් හරිත කඳු සහ ගලා බසින දිය ඇලි අතර, ඇල්ල පිහිටා ඇත: මෙම කඳුළු හැඩැති දිවයිනේ වඩාත් ආකර්ෂණීය ගමනාන්තයකි.
ඇල්ල පර්වතයේ උස් කඳු තරණය කිරීමේ සිට ප්‍රථම වතාවට අද්භූත නව ආරුක්කු පාලම මත ඇස් තැබීම දක්වා; ඝෝෂා කරන දියලුම ඇල්ල (රටේ උසම දෙවන) අද්දර සිටගෙන, තේ වතු සහ කඳු හරහා වංගු කරමින් සුප්‍රසිද්ධ මහනුවර සිට ඇල්ල දක්වා දුම්රිය හරහා ගමන් කරයි; අපගේ ප්‍රියතම ශ්‍රී ලාංකීය වික්‍රමාන්විතයන් බොහොමයක් මෙතැනින් සොයාගත හැකිය.
එහි හදවතෙහිම, ඇල්ල යනු දකුණු වෙරළ තීරයේ විවේකීව සිටීමට, කඳු නැගීම සඳහා සහ ගැලවී යාමට සුදුසු ආකර්ශනීය සහ විවේකී ගම්මානයකි.

2016 වසරේ අපගේ පළමු සංචාරයෙන් පසු කඳුකරයේ පිහිටි මෙම සරල ගම්මානය ප්‍රධාන සංචාරක නැවතුම්පළක් බවට පරිවර්තනය වී ඇති බව අපට ඔබට අනතුරු ඇඟවීමට සිදුවේ.
ජනප්‍රියතාවයෙන් සහ ප්‍රමාණයෙන් වර්ධනය වීම නිසා දැන් ගම්මානයේ සෑම අස්සක් මුල්ලක් නෑරම කොන්ක්‍රීට් අක්ෂි ගණනාවක් තිත් වී ඇති අතර, එමඟින් ප්‍රදේශය ඇදහිය නොහැකි තරම් සාමකාමී, ග්‍රාමීය චමත්කාරය ඉවත් කර ඇත.
නමුත් ඇල්ලේ දැකීමට සහ කිරීමට බොහෝ දේ ඇත - ඔබ සංචාරක සුන්දර දර්ශන සහ වීර කාව්‍ය භූ දර්ශන වලට වඩා ගැඹුරට යාමට කැමති නම්.
