Please see the below statement on the FALL FESTIVAL

The story of Cass County begins with the coming together of three parts: the Native Pokagon peoples who have resided here for thousands of years, the White settlers, and the free and freedom-seeking Black communities. It is the sincere belief of the Cass County Historical Commission that each of these elements is part of what makes this county unique, with stories and cultures that should be valued in equal measure.

With the Fall Festival at the Newton House less than a month away, the Historical Commission would like to remind our residents and visitors to be mindful and respectful of our various cultures. For example, to our Native community, the clothing worn at festivals or gatherings is imbued with complex and important spiritual, ancestral, and personal beliefs. Their clothing is not a costume; it is regalia.

In that spirit, we want to encourage anyone “dressing up” for the Fall Festival or joining in the "historical impressions" contest to remember that our Cass County history is a diverse history, and, again, to be respectful in your choices. Our goal is to foster appreciation for all members of our community.
