Thank you Vancouver Foundation's Donor Services Team for coming on a walk with the Cross Cultural Walking Tours!

“Carmel shared so much of the rich history of the Strathcona neighborhoods with our team. A super-informative and fun way for our team to learn together and discover together. Lots of curiosity sparked too, with lots of interest from folks to come and explore some more.”

Thank you WildBrain Studios for coming on a walk with the Cross Cultural Walking Tours!

“Joining Cross Cultural Walking Tours was a wonderful experience for our team. It gave us an opportunity to bond through a very unique experience of gaining a deeper understanding of many historic areas of the DTES and Chinatown. Our tour consisted of individuals who grew up in Vancouver as well as newcomers and everyone learned so much. We loved the experience of hearing from different tour guides and each brought a personal touch to the stories they told. I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing the Cross Cultural Walking Tour for any group, it was a memorable experience and introduction to many historic sites, organizations and businesses that we are excited to explore further.”

Thank you Heritage BC for inviting Cross Cultural Walking Tours' Carmel Tanaka and Vancouver DeTours' Alasdair Butcher to co-facilitate a workshop on "Diversifying Heritage Walking Tours Through a Decolonial Methodology" on May 27, 2023 at the 2023 Annual Heritage BC Conference in Chilliwack, BC!

A workshop highlight included inviting participants to produce a spontaneous tour, which had us "paddling" across the province to learn about sites that are important to many diverse communities. It was a fun, meaningful exercise and one that we hope folks will carry with them as they continue their journey in heritage work.

Many thanks to Kamala Todd for recommending the two of us to Heritage BC! It was a wonderful partnership and we are grateful for being connected.

➕First, the good news - Cross Cultural Walking Tours will be offering a workshop on "Diversifying Heritage Walking Tours" at Heritage BC's upcoming conference together with Vancouver DeTours on May 27! See the attached post for more details.

➖Second, the disappointing news - there will not be a May festival this year. Despite our efforts, Cross Cultural Walking Tours have not been able to obtain liability insurance for our walking tours. 😲 No insurance company will provide the coverage we need as an unincorporated casual annual festival with the odd private/corporate tour here and there. It's shocking that we are considered an extreme sport... 🤯

🙏Third, the hopeful news - at this time, we are still able to offer corporate tours for clients who are able to cover their own liability insurance and show proof of coverage. We're in talks about offering Cross Cultural 🏳️‍🌈Q***r & Trans🏳️‍⚧️ Walking Tours at Vancouver Pride Society's East Side Pride in June, and our regular tours at Fire Dragon Festival in September (grants pending).

📣We are not giving up, as this is part of our livelihood and we'd LOVE to continue! That being said, we do not have any interest in becoming yet another non-profit or becoming a tour operating business, but are open to the idea of becoming a social enterprise program of an existing charity or joining an existing tour operation, so we can continue collaborating together in the way we know best - Cross Culturally. If this would be of interest to any of our community partners or fans of our work, please get in touch by email: crossculturalwalkingtours [at] gmail [dot] com

Thank you all for your support. We hope to bring back our festival in 2024, provided we can find a way around this systemic barrier!!

Attend the Workshop on Diversifying Heritage Walking Tours Through a Decolonial Methodology.

Heritage walking tours help historical societies, museums and more engage locals and visitors with the built and intangible environments that make up our communities. As the heritage sector embraces the principles of diversity and reconciliation in the narratives that we share, our walking tours are an important place to diversify the stories we tell about place and community. Join our facilitators for a workshop built to help you start this process, and begin taking actionable steps to incorporate diverse stories in your tours through a decolonized lens.

One of the highlights for the Cross Cultural Walking Tours this year was the Q***r & Trans walks during Pride Month. It brought together voices from diverse 2SLGBTQIA+ communities who were collaborating for the first time.

It is wonderful to have long-standing CCWT community partner Wongs' Benevolent Association 黄氏宗親總會 host a meeting for CCWT Community Partner JQT Vancouver with Parliamentary Secretary of Gender Equity Grace Lore to discuss important issues impacting all of our communities. This is a perfect example of how communities can cross-culturally help one another. At the end of the day, "no one is free until we are all free".

We look forward to having Grace join us for a Q***r & Trans Cross Cultural Walking Tour in the near future!

***rTrans

JQT Board Member Aviva Rathbone and Carmel Tanaka (Founder of JQT Vancouver and Cross Cultural Walking Tours) met with Government of British Columbia's Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity Grace Lore to discuss:

1) the need for financial core support for diverse q***r/trans community groups, who are supporting their communities as volunteers;

2) ensuring public dollars benefit the entire community, especially q***r trans youth, elders and all those who exist on the periphery and are doubly+ marginalized;

and 3) the urgency to end the use of NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) in the community non-profit sector in BC.

We sent Grace home with some “light” bedtime reading, a freshly printed report of our Twice Blessed 2.0 community needs assessment in partnership with JFS, which can be viewed online here: https://www.jqtvancouver.ca/twice-blessed-2

We also look forward to having Grace join us on a future Q***r & Trans Cross Cultural Walking Tours - a program that JQT is proud to be a part of in addition to 30+ community partners!

Special shoutout to CCWT’s community partner Wongs' Benevolent Association 黄氏宗親總會 for hosting this meeting in your beautiful heritage Cantonese classroom and for your long-standing support of celebrating diversity together!

There is A LOT of news coming out of the DTES. Here is an overview of some of the big topics. Please do click on the links below so you can do a deeper dive.

1) A rash of fires has been plaguing SROs (single-room occupancy buildings) across the DTES. The causes of these fires are still under investigation. Whether or not it's arson, people have been killed and dozens upon dozens are being displaced and its having a devastating impact on the DTES community. There are tons of articles on the web when you search: "Fires in Chinatown DTES 2022". SRO Collaborative is working with the displaced tenants on shelter and housing, and other immediate needs.

2) The fires have also damaged DTES establishments such as a church, a market, and most recently, the much beloved Gain Wah Restaurant. CCWT's community partner Youth Collaborative for Chinatown - 青心在唐人街 has set up a fire relief fund here: https://gofund.me/ab49ac98

3) The opioid crisis continues to take the lives of loved ones in the DTES and beyond. We hear of people dying daily. As of May 2022, the death total was already at 940 (this number is depressingly much higher now). Learn more here: https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2022/07/18/bc-coroner-fears-opioid-crisis/

4) On a positive note, Hogan's Alley Society announced that they "have reached an agreement with the City of Vancouver to create a Community Land Trust and a mixed-use redevelopment for the site in Strathcona." Read more here: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-vancouver-signs-deal-to-turn-former-site-of-hogans-alley-into/

This is not an exhaustive list of everything that's going on in the DTES, but it is a cross selection of important news that is affecting many of our community partners. When Cross Cultural Walking Tours does walks, our tour guides and participating organizations often change from month to month, as it reflects the reality and current state of the people who live in this neighbourhood, one that is continually in flux.

On September 9, a fire broke out in a historic building in … Youth Collaborative for Chinatown needs your support for Fire Relief Fund for Beloved Chinatown Restaurant
