This was our first time trying this hotel and we will most definitely return. Probably our best use of a Marriott 35k certificate yet.

💳We used a Marriott Free Night Credit (35k points or less) for this stay from a Marriott Card with a $95 annual fee. These rooms were averaging $400-$450 a night.

💬 I will say, we got this with a 35k certificate this year, but they are doing lots of renovation and my expectation is that the points price will be higher next year. There are some cards that offer a higher free night credit that would be eligible.

Today is Companion Pass Day!

✈️This is the first day that it is really recommended that people start pursuing companion pass, but if you don't NEED that companion pass in January, we recommend you.....WAIT!

🪡 Threading the needle on the companion pass can be tricky. You have to be sure to meet your minimum spend in the right year, or you will end up with one year of companion pass, or worse ZERO years!

⏱️ By waiting until November or even December, you give yourself a more reasonable time frame in January to meet your minimum spends.

🛌 Because we usually try to hit both SeaWorld AND Legoland, and we like free breakfast, we usually end up at the Hyatt House, and it is a great property with an expansive breakfast buffet!

🍳 If you don't care about breakfast, or you have Hyatt globalist, Manchester Grand Hyatt is supposed to be lovely!

🏖 I also think the La Jolla Hyatt Regency looks like a great in between option if youre not looking for breakfast, and they have free beach gear for you to take to the beach, which is a great bonus!

Looking to take your family to Costa Rica? 🇨🇷

💬 What questions do you have about traveling to Costa Rica?

It's a beautiful place but it's definitely not a cheap trip! Enter....travel hacking 😊

🛬 We were able to make this trip for $1300, which, yes, is a lot of money, but the price for our flights and hotels should have been $5700. That's a savings of $4400 🤯

🚗 If we had used miles to pay ourselves back for the rental car as well, we could have gotten it down to $400 which is just the taxes and fees for the international flight.

This is so jarring when it happens, but don't panic!

And even if you do panic (I totally did) know that there are steps you can take!

📞Getting on the phone to figure out WHY you were rejected is the best first step.

🤦🏼‍♀️ I got rejected awhile back and I was so bummed out, but I had COMPLETELY forgotten that my credit had extra protections on it due to having it stolen prior to that....

📲 Calling the reconsideration line confirmed that they just needed some extra documentation to confirm my identity, which I will always appreciate after dealing with someone opening a card in my name...

😞 Worst Case scenario, the No is a No. Often times they will give you a reason and you can use this to inform your next steps. Sometimes just waiting a couple months is all it takes to try again.

One year ago today i had the most 🌟magical🌟 day in Disneyland with my daughter for her birthday. Without travel hacking, this never would have been possible.

✈️ For 8 years we lived in a small town that was hard to get in and out of. While we travel hacked some during this time, it just didn't work to fly a lot, so we drove, and filled up on road trips.

🏰 This was our first major return to travel hacking, as we moved to a bigger city, and what a return it was.

💳 I am so grateful that by managing our expenses and just signing up for credit cards every few months, we are able to have amazing adventures like this.

It ain't just for boujee folks! ⏬️

I totally thought I had to travel a ton or decide to be extra and spend money on precheck to get through the Denver Airport line in less than 2 hours but....I was wrong!

📌 Save and share with a friend who hates airport security lines....aka....all of us!

💳 There are several Credit Cards that cover the TSA precheck fees, all you have to do is register and do a quick fingerprinting session. You could be done in a week!

🧒🏼 Kids under 18 can go through with a parent who has precheck.

👞 With precheck, your shoes stay on and your toiletries and electronics stay in your bag. Solo, this is great, BUT with a gaggle of kids, this is a magical dreamland from which I never want to leave.

Will you get your points back?

🥳 Yes! Your points will return to you! This is why we love booking on points!

✈️ With a US based carrier, your points will return to your account when you cancel. We have cancelled with most major US airlines with points and haven't paid any fees.

🇨🇦 With foreign carriers, there can often be a points reinstatement fee to get the points returned to your account. Pay attention to the fine print when booking so you won't be surprised by this!

Referrals can get you a ton of points, but the process to start a referral can be intimidating.

One of my favorite Mom Hacks when flying southwest.....ask for a lid for your kids AND FOR YOU!

☕️ We have avoided so many spills this way, and while the flight attendants will often give the kids one, getting one for myself has been a game changer as I shuffle activities and snacks.

🌟 This flight attendant was a rock star and gave us the cutest little accessories to our drinks that had us all grinning.

Why do we love Southwest Airlines? Let us count the ways....

💳 It is super easy to transfer from Blue Bank to Southwest. We also love getting the Southwest Companion Pass through credit cards (more on that coming in October).

🥳 They are fun! In this photo my daughter won a hula hoop competition with their customer engagement team.

👧🏼🧒🏼👦🏼 They are family friendly. Their family boarding always allows our family seats together.

🧳Two free bags, for everyone, no status required....

💰 They are cost effective. If you're not traveling on points they are in most major airports, and generally cost much less than your other big names.

Hyatt hotels are the easiest hotels to transfer your points to. ⤵️

🤷🏼‍♀️ A friend asked me this week, why do you like hyatt so much? And truthfully it's not about hyatt, it's about the points transfer capability.

🛌 Many family hotel properties within Hyatt sit at 12-20,000 points. This means with a good sign up bonus I can easily get 5 nights at one of these hotels.

🥣The all-inclusive options are higher in price, but they also include all your food and drink. While we haven't tried one yet, I've heard awesome things about the Ziva properties.

We have learned a lot about what travel gear works with kids (and for mom!)

Here are 3 of our favorites....

🎒Deuter backpacks - we have had these for years and they have never ripped, they are easy to clean, and easy for kids to carry.

💺Diono Radian Carseat - I first flew with my daughter in the largest car seat ever and it was a nightmare. This car seat is super easy and travels like a dream. It also fits in super small overseas vehicles quite easily!

🐕 Melissa and Doug Reusable Puff Stickers - all my kids love them, and the toddler can peel them off himself. Win!

Continuing our vacation rentals with points series. Up next AirBNB.

AirBNB is unfortunately one of the hardest vacation rentals services to book with points.

🛌 The good news, you can earn points on AirBNB when booking through a portal. British Airways, Delta, Qantas, and ANA portals all allow you to book AirBNB and earn airline miles.

💎Blue Bank Preferred and Reserve cards allow you to receive 2x or 3x points when paying for travel with your card.

Traveling Internationally can be hard. Doing it with kids can often add an extra challenge. These things gave us peace of mind and an easier trip on our last international hop.

🛃 Take photos of your passport. Save these in the cloud. If there's ever an emergency, you'll always be able to access them from an embassy. We also keep everyone's old passport in a separate bag in case of theft.

📱Research Phone Plans. Will your phone work with your US plan? Do you need a new SIM card? Our Tmobile phones worked awesome overseas, but Verizon had an added plan required to avoid upcharges.

🚗 Figure Out Local Tips. For Costa Rica this revolved around Rental Cars. There is a mandatory insurance you pay, many companies don't give you this up front and you find out when you arrive. We used Adobe- Rent-a-Car who tells you everything up front. Also, Waze is the map app of choice there that is most updated. This saved us on a couple occasions.

Travel hackers talk about transferring points all the time, but it's easy to get confused about how to do this, I definitely did when I first started out.

💳 We transfer points because often it's the best redemption value (although we recommend checking the portal....specifically with Marriott).

🧐 Always do your research before you transfer. You don't want to transfer more or less than you need. I usually have the reservations all pulled up before I ever start a transfer.

✈️ These transfers to the travel partners are what allow so many travel hackers to take such luxurious trips. It takes a bit of time to learn, but it sure pays off in the long run.

While many people have varying experiences with this, here is our experience. We took a photo of the damage. We sent a photo of the receipt for our brand new stroller. We asked nicely if there was anything they were able to do. They sent us the price of our stroller in Travel Vouchers. We saw this as a win, since we knew we would use them. . . However....many credit cards have luggage protection. Check yours to see if it's included, and pay for your flight fees with that card.
