The General Philip Kearny Memorial Town Tour (GPKMTT) is an on-going initiative to help residents and others learn about Major General Philip Kearny and his town’s culturally diverse history in an interactive format. The 5.1-mile urban hike features 12 historical monuments in the Town of Kearny, New Jersey. Marking the trail are numbered waypoints of General Kearny at each of the 12 designated stops. Participants can earn a commemorative patch and medal of General Kearny by answering questions about the 12 historical sites in the tour booklet.

To register and order the free tour booklet, please email [email protected]. Additionally, an audio recording of the self-guided historical walking tour can be downloaded through the app available through www.VisitHudson.org. Kearny Mayor Alberto Santos and Nathaniel Jablonski recorded the introduction and information about the 12 featured monuments in the tour booklet, memorializing the historical tour of Kearny in a modern format.

The GPKMTT was developed as the Eagle Project of Nathaniel Jablonski of Troop/Unit 305 at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny to share the historical contributions of Kearny’s residents, past, present, and future, in an engaging way. The inaugural hike took place on September 7, 2019. For further information, visit GPKMTT social media:

On the blue skied, crisp Saturday morning of September 7, 2019, 118 people of all ages participated in the inaugural hike of the “General Philip Kearny Memorial Town Tour” as the kickoff of the Eagle Scout Service Project of Nathaniel Jablonski, a Life Scout and the Troop Guide of Unit 305 in Kearny, and high school junior at St. Peter’s Prep. Scouts from Unit 305 and other Boy and Girl Scout Troops in New Jersey were joined by Mayor Alberto Santos, all members of the Kearny Town Council, the General Philip Kearny Memorial Committee, local organizations, residents, and guests to learn about the culturally-diverse history of the Town of Kearny.

Hikers gathered on the lawn of VFW Post #1302 on Veterans Row on Belgrove Drive in Kearny. The tour’s self-guided 5.1-mile urban hike routing among 12 of Kearny’s historical monuments began at the statue of the Civil War Union Soldier positioned between the VFW and American Legion Post 99. After completing the questions in the tour booklet, participants were presented with a commemorative medal and patch of General Kearny designed specifically for this tour by Jablonski.

The General Philip Kearny Memorial Town Tour is an on-going initiative to help residents and others learn about Kearny’s rich history in an interactive format. A recording of the self-guided historical walking tour can be downloaded through the app available through www.VisitHudson.org. Today in New Jersey history:

August 7, 1861: General Philip Kearny, one armed New Jersey hero of the Mexican War, assumed command of the First New Jersey Brigade in Virginia. The ill-disciplined brigade’s first meeting with its new commander was not auspicious, as he found the Jerseymen looting a peach orchard. After placing the officers under arrest, Kearny met with them and laid out disciplinary guidelines. Over the winter of 1861-1862, the general’s training regimen turned the brigade into a first class outfit, a reputation it maintained to the end of the war. Kearny never commanded the Jerseymen in combat, though, leaving for division command before the Peninsula Campaign.

August 7, 1967: The first C-141 transport plane, dubbed The Garden State Starlifter, arrived at McGuire Air Force Base.
