Long before St. George was known for its striking red rocks and adventurous trails, the Southern Paiute people thrived in this land, rich with history and cultural significance. The region wasn’t just a place to live—it was a source of life, shelter, and deep spiritual connection.

The Paiute (Nung Wu) chose to live here for its abundant resources: fertile valleys for gathering plants, nearby water sources (the virgin river), and the desert landscape that provided hunting opportunities (elk, deer, rabbits and more) and materials for shelter and tools. But perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of their life in this region was their relationship with caves.

Caves were more than just natural formations; they were sacred spaces. These shelters offered protection from the intense desert sun and served as places of rest during cold nights. But beyond practicality, caves held deep cultural importance. They were places for storytelling, ceremonies, and spiritual practices, echoing the voices of generations past and preserving the first humans living in this area connection to their ancestors and the land.

The St. George region’s landscape whispers stories of resilience, spirituality, and the deep-rooted bond the Paiute have with this land. Next time you hike through this stunning terrain, take a moment to pause and honor the history that runs deep in the rocks and hidden caverns.

Want to do an land acknowledgement on your next hike? Take 5 minutes of silence and offer these words: May we explore these lands with the same respect and awe as those who called it home for centuries.

Each month, our cultural resources director, Autumn Gillard, shares a Paiute word of the month with Tribe members. This month's word is especially noteworthy as we go into Native American Heritage Month.

The true name for the Southern Paiute People is "Nung'Wu," pronounced new-ung'-woo (to hear a pronunciation, click here: https://pitu.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Southern-Paiute-People-NungWu-November-2024.m4a).

Other variations include "Nuwu" and "Nuwuvi." The word "Paiute" was first imposed on the Nung'Wu ancestors during the Dominguez-Escalante expedition in 1776.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the PITU Cultural Department will be posting a series of trivia questions on social media for a chance to win prizes each week, sponsored by the PITU Puow'wan Program. Keep your eyes open for the first question on Monday.
