Tuesday Travel Tips: Pack a lot of snacks

Pros: You save money
What you need: Your own snacks and a carry-on bag

****** LITERALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAVEL TIP *******

Snacks are incredibly expensive at the airport. The markup is crazy, and you might find yourself paying three times more for snacks and drinks than you would otherwise. Airports charge more because their business operating costs are higher. So, they’re part of the reason their food prices are so high. The solution? Bring your own snacks to the airport. Treat it like a movie theater. Solid food items can be transported in your carry-on. You might have to separate these items out of your carry-on bag, but they can go through the scanners. As for a bottle of soda, that’ll have to wait until you’re past security, sadly. Pringles are great since they don't smash easily and pack well!

Tulum Mexico is a great vacation experience. Tulum is a town on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It’s known for its beaches and well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city. The main building is a large stone structure called El Castillo (castle), perched on a rocky cliff above the white sand beach and turquoise sea.
I have several vacation pkgs available to book for Tulum. Let’s get you booked there this summer. Inbox me.

TAHITI ANYONE???
Diving & Snorkeling

Proudly displayed on the bodies of Tahitians, you’ll find manta ray, shark, whale and sea turtle tattoos that tell the story of a people defined by the sea. Divers come from around the world to experience these sacred sea creatures, which, in The Islands of Tahiti, hold a place of reverence among the gods.

It’s only natural that the sea around these islands is both figuratively and literally a clear blue heaven on earth. The warm waters that surround The Islands of Tahiti teem with life from flirty clown fish to ever-present sharks to awe-inspiring humpback whales, which arrive between July and November. When you’re ready to do some diving and snorkeling, the heavens await.

Top 15 Free Things to Do in Curacao

Looking for free things to do in Curaçao? This colourful Dutch Caribbean island is best known for its beautiful beaches.
But during my two decades of visiting the island and writing about it for magazines like Curaçao Nights and Fodor’s guidebooks, I’ve discovered a kaleidoscope of fun things to do beyond the beach that won’t cost you a thing.
These exciting activities and unique attractions are great for all kinds of travellers, whether you’re on a cruise excursion, a family getaway or a week-long vacation.
So, here are my top picks for the very best FREE things to do in Curaçao on a budget.

1. Enjoy a Free Walking Tour of Willemstad
Who doesn’t love a good guided walking tour of a fascinating little city? But it’s even better when it’s free! Introducing the new Free Walking Tours of Curacao group, a team of volunteers dedicated to sharing the love of their island’s downtown history, colours, and culture with visitors.
In addition to introducing you to main
points of interest, their well-informed tours are full of fun surprises like free samples of “Rom Berde” a locally-made green rum!
The Free Walking Tours of Curaçao guides all have other day jobs, but they love what they do. If you love them too, please feel free to show them with a generous gratuity.
The days and districts of the walking tours vary, so see their website for more information and reservations.

2. Stroll with a Swinging Old Lady – Queen Emma Bridge

One of the most popular things to do in Curacao is visit Queen Emma – the longest floating wooden pontoon bridge in the world. It connects pedestrian traffic from Punda (“The Point”) to Otrobanda (“The Other Side”) in Curacao’s colourful downtown capital city of Willemstad. She also swings open to allow ships to enter the St. Anna (Sint Annabaai) channel.

Originally built in 1888, locals affectionately refer to her as “The Swinging Old Lady.” Although she might be old, she’s still very regal, especially when lit up at night. Taking in the view of Queen Emma Bridge is one of the best things to do in downtown Willemstad at night.

3. Sleuth Out the New Outdoor Art in Willemstad
Willemstad is made up of many unique pocket neighbourhoods or ‘barrios’ as locals call them. Lately many of them have been quietly undergoing exciting rejuvenations and even reimaginations due to community beautification programs and outdoor art projects.

Stroll around the historic neighbourhood of Scharloo Abou to see entire buildings turned into incredible art installations spearheaded by Street Art Skalo.
Or, wander into the interior of Otrobanda (Ser’i Otrobanda) to see entire blocks turning into outdoor art. One striking must-see is the new three-building mural by Blend Creative Imaging called “Bida ta un bunita lucha” meaning “Life is a beautiful struggle.”

4. Shoot Epic Photos in Pietermaai
The stunning juxtaposition of old and new side-by-side in the continually transforming trendy neighbourhood of Pietermaai is eye candy for your camera. It’s almost impossible not to get a great shot wherever you point and shoot in this little grid of interesting and eclectic scenes.
Ancient colonial homes, old mansions, and even a historic monastery have been turned into brightly coloured boutique hotels, fun, funky, and luxe bars and restaurants, and cool cafes.

And it’s right on the sea with its own tiny urban beach, so you can get great shots of the sunset over the water and the ships coming and going into the harbour in the distance.

Plan to return at night when the restaurants open and the bars and nightclubs are buzzing with live music. It’s a whole different scene after dark.
Check out our top choice for a hotel in the Pietermaai neighbourhood in the Best Girlfriend Getaways in the Caribbean.

5. Go Jump Off A Cliff
Curaçao is well known for its beautiful white sand beaches (such as Klein Knip beach – one of the best in the Caribbean), but there are also many under-the radar spots to explore.
A favourite local pastime is cliff jumping into the blue waters at Playa Forti, a small beach in Westpunt. Adventurous visitors are beginning to get in on the action too.

6. Visit the Birthplace of Curacao’s Famous Liqueur
Landhuis Chobolobo, a gorgeous restored plantation house that’s worth a visit in its own right, is the home of the orange brandy libation that put the island on the map.

Made from bitter local laraha oranges and coloured to make it more alluring, Blue Curaçao is the best-known shade. But it also comes in a rainbow of other colours as well.

You’re welcome to visit the property and take a self-guided tour free of charge. There are videos and plaques that explain the distilling process as well as lots of exhibits.
But you might want to bring some money for one of their specialty cocktails in their lovely alfresco garden afterward, and buy a few bottles from their shop to take home. (They also have in-depth guided tours you can pay for that include samples and cocktails.)

7. Dance at a Free Street Party in Punda Curacao
Who doesn’t love a street party full of music, dancing, food, art, and local culture and colour? Add fabulous fireworks over the famous downtown harbour and you’ve really got a swinging shindig!

If you’re looking for things to do in Curaçao at night, definitely put visiting the Punda area on your must-do list. Every Thursday on the waterfront between 6pm and 10pm, Punda’s Thursday Vibes is free and the place to be.
If you’re planning to do some shopping in Curaçao, the stores and galleries all around the pedestrian-only streets of the public square called Gomez Plein stay open late that night so it’s possible to explore them after sunset.

8. Visit the Factory Where ChichiÂŽ Figurines are Created
One of the best souvenirs to buy in Curacao is a Chichi® figurine. You’re bound to see these iconic Curaçao souvenirs in many different sizes and in a rainbow of colours in shops all around the island. There are a few larger-than-life Chichi sculptures gracing public spaces too.

The brightly coloured bald figurines are inspired by “chichi” the affectionate name given to the warm and wise older sister of Caribbean families. But there’s more to this gal and her family of figurines that meets the eye.

9. Discover the Legacy of Artist Nena Sanchez

Nena Sanchez was one of Curacao’s most beloved artists, famous for her bold, colourful depictions of island life. Her untimely passing in 2017 was mourned by all.
But her vibrant works and “Alice in Wonderland” like gallery still grace the historic plantation building Landhuis Jan Kok where she used to hold her workshops. Visiting the gallery is one of the top things to do in Curacao for culture fans.

10. Spy on Wild Flamingos
Much as in its sister island of Bonaire, there are a few salt pans areas around Curaçao that wild flamingos flock to. But the one where you’ll see the most of those cool and quirky pink birds in one spot is the nature sanctuary called Saliña Sint Marie.

It’s by the side of the road to St. Willibrordus and Playa Porto Mari, one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches.

11. Snorkel with Sea Turtles
For underwater fun, Playa Grandi, also called Playa Piscado (piscado means fish), is a rocky little beach cove on the west end of Curaçao where local fishermen bring in their catch. After they clean their bounty on the little pier, they throw the remains back into the sea where grateful sea turtles are always waiting to gobble up the goodies.

It’s not much of a swimming spot, but everyone who makes the trek out there with snorkel gear is there only to swim with the turtles.

Please heed the onsite signs and information provided by Sea Turtle Conservation Curacao. Never touch, chase, or crowd the turtles. And always take your trash with you, especially plastic bags so they won’t end up in the sea and turtles will mistake them for jellyfish and eat them.

12. Go Back in Time at Gallery Alma Blou
The beautifully restored Landhuis Habaai is more than 300 years old and has been hosting Gallery Alma Blou the largest contemporary art gallery on Curaçao for over a decade.

3. Tour a Real Aloe Farm
Looking for a wellness boost? One of the top free things to do in Curaçao is to head to the east end of the island. Here, you’ll find the vast fields of aloe plants that Curaloe harvests to make their excellent skincare, health, and beauty products. Due to its arid conditions Curacao produces some of the best quality aloe on the planet.

While there, take a free self-guided tour and watch a video to see how the process of extracting the gel works. There is also a Curaloe shop on site where you can pick up some aloe, one of the most popular souvenirs in Curacao. You can purchase their high quality products island-wide and online, too.

14. Hang Out at a Secret Kiteboarder’s Beach
When it comes to outdoor activities, St. Joris Baai on the island’s eastern tip is a lovely, off-the-beaten-path spot for a picnic, a hike, or a mountain bike ride. There are also a few trails carved out around the seawater lake.

5. Marvel at a Cathedral Made of Thorns
Part of the Landhuis Bloemhof historic plantation and cultural centre, and beside the brand-new Museum of Natural History Curacao is an incredible art project that has taken many years to create. It’s an entire life-sized cathedral made of thorns!

Accommodation on the island is mostly in the form of all inclusive resorts, where tourists have a chance of completely relaxing in a lovely room facing a fantastic garden and overlooking the ocean; a bunch of nice restaurants and bars; and the possibility of organizing expeditions around the island.

During my time in Antigua I had the chance of visiting various all inclusive resorts and they each vary greatly one from the other. If you haven’t made up your mind on where to stay, continue reading and discover the best places to stay in Antigua! In this post, I will share insightful information about the nicest Antigua all inclusive in what is by all means a non exhaustive list.

All Antigua all inclusive resorts have access to splendid beaches
The Best Antigua All Inclusive For The Perfect Holiday
The Pineapple Beach Club
The perfect choice for people who aren’t traveling with children and are looking for a fantastic beach right at their doorstep, and care to have a good choice of restaurants.

This is my favorite resort in Antigua, and where I spent most of my time while on the island. The Pineapple Beach Club is part of the Elite Island Resorts group; it is located on Long Bay, one of the best beaches in Antigua, right outside the nice small village of Willokee and about 20 minutes drive from the international airport.
The resort provides a full Caribbean experience, with buildings in the traditional style of the island (wooden and colorful) located around lush gardens, with views of the ocean or even beachfront. The property is quite large, but all rooms are at a stone’s throw from the beach.

This is an adults only resort – meaning that only 16+ and above are allowed to stay on the property. It’s ideal for couples who don’t have kids or groups of friends.
Some rooms have been built recently, and are a bit more modern than others. All are comfortable and have a large bed, a TV, a telephone, a coffee and tea maker (with actual good coffee!), a safe, a shower or tub and a hair dryer.
You will find a variety of dining options. The main restaurant is on a terrace right on the beach. The Pineapple Grill is the finest restaurant in the resort; and there also is a fast food (which actually has plenty of healthy choices) at the place right behind the main bar. Finally, the Oathouse is a barbeque style place located on a hill from where there’s incredible views of the beach below.

You will be able to do hobiecat sailing; kayaking; paddle boarding; snorkeling on the off shore reef. There also are tennis courts and a fitness center. The reception will help you organize trips around the island for an additional price.
Last, but not least, staff Pineapple Beach Club is incredibly kind and friendly, making it a great choice among the many Antigua resorts.
A room with a view is almost for granted

The Verandah Resort and Spa
This resort is perfect for families with children and offers a lot of activities on the site or right near it.
On the other side of the same road where Pineapple Beach Club is located, there’s another resort belonging to the Elite Island Resorts group. It is found on the north east coast of Antigua, on a property that borders the famous Devil’s Bridge National Park and that is so large that it has its own secluded hiking trails and that at times feels like a labyrinth to explore.

You will love its easy going atmosphere, with a nice bar right on the beach; and the feeling of being in a small village.
The Verandah has adopted a green policy of recycling and not wasting plastic. It welcomes families with children, who can enjoy the large pool (one of the largest in Antigua) or the tranquil waters of the bay. Day care is available at the resort Kidz Club, where there’s a playground and a splash pool. There’s also babysitting services for an extra charge.
Verandah rooms are lovely. There are 3 kinds of rooms: hillside, waterview and waterfront. There even are two bedroom villas, perfect for families, and two-bedroom plunge pool villas. All rooms have coffee making facilities, safes, showers or tubs, a phone and the most comfortable bed, and a lovely balcony to relax.

The Verandah has three restaurants: a buffet style restaurant; Buccaneer which offers tasty Caribbean style food, and the elegant Nicole’s. Matching the restaurants, there are 3 different bars.
Finally, there are tennis courts; a fitness club; snorkeling and kayaking; paddle boarding; windsurfing and hobiecat sailing. Tours of the island can be arranged for an additional price and there’s also a rental car agency right behind the main reception area. Boat rides can be taken to Green Island and Bird Island.

Location is
everything for an Antigua all inclusive

Galley Bay Resort and Spa
A resort perfect for those who are seeking tranquility in an elegant yet easygoing setting, and those who care about environmental protection.
Galley Bay is an award winning Antigua all inclusive, part of the Elite Island Resorts group, located on a very intimate, gorgeous beach (one of the best beaches in Antigua) and with a refined yet never pretentious atmosphere. It is surrounded by lush tropical gardens, complete of a lagoon and a bird sanctuary. The property strives to be eco-friendly, and even has an on site fruit and vegetable garden. Since it is on the west coast, sunset views are splendid.
The reception area is located right next to a historic sugar mill, and a wooden causeway leads to the cottages, passing by the lagoon. There are 98 rooms, all within tropical gardens and the overall impression is one of tranquility and privacy. All rooms have easy beach access. Some face the lagoon, others he beach. The Superior, Deluxe and Premium Suites are located directly on the sand.

There are three open-air beachfront restaurants and two lounges, all serving delicious food. The best is Ismay’s, named after the oldest member of staff. There’s obviously live entertainment, cocktail and barbecue parties. There even are weekly movie nights, with a cinema set right there on the sand – I think the only time I saw something similar was in the Maldives.
In line with its tranquility, water sports on offer are non-motorized. Among them, there’s hobiecat sailing, snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayak. There’s a gorgeous swimming pool and some jogging trails and tennis courts, making it the best resort in Antigua for active travelers. Activities on offer to guests for an additional price include island tours, catamaran cruises and zip lining.

A good resort is bound to have stunning sunrise or sunset views
St. James’s Club and Villas
The best resort in Antigua for those seeking a romantic place, away from all the chaos of their daily life!
St. James’s is located on the south-east coast of Antigua, and it is known for its outstanding service. Part of the Elite Island Resorts group, it caters to any kind of traveler – families, couples and even singles. It’s the kind of place where visitors can completely unwind from the stress of every day life and an ideal place to enjoy all that Antigua has to offer: the beaches as well as the inland adventures.

The resort is located on two incredible Antigua beaches – Coco beach and Malmora bay. It boasts four pools, three of them adults only, and all of them with views of the ocean. There are also four tennis courts and a fitness center with a yoga deck: in other words, it a great resort for those who like to stay fit even when on holidays.
There are 247 guest rooms, suites and villas – some perfect for honeymooners, making it one of the best resorts in Antigua for a romantic getaway.

Families with children appreciate the Kidz Club (and the babysitting for an additional fee), where children are entertained by trained stuff with a wide range of fun activities: they can stay there even for dinner, giving parents the chance to have a nice romantic dinner in one of the resort’s restaurants.
Speaking of dinner, there are four incredible restaurants, one of them is the lovely Italian style (with a touch of Caribbean) Piccolo Mondo.
On offer, there’s a range of non-motorized water-sports, a dive-shop and guests can also book catamaran expeditions. Last but not least, there’s the fantastic Tranquility Body & Soul Spa, where unique treatments are done, using locally-sourced products.

Jolly Beach Resort And Spa
A perfect resort for foodies who will love the many dining options.
What makes Jolly Beach Resort and Spa one of the top Antigua all inclusive resorts is the fact that all rooms face the ocean and that it is set on a mile long, white, sandy beach with pristine turquoise waters – thought to be not only one of the best beaches in Antigua, but also in the Caribbean.

The resort is located around half hour drive from the international airport and boasts a whopping 464 rooms, that go from supersaver to beachfront cottages – in other words, it caters to any need and any budget. All rooms have a private balcony, a mini-fridge, coffee and tea makers, in room wi-fi, a safe and obviously a tub or a shower.
There are five great restaurants, including a buffet and Bocciolo, which serves Italian food (and as it is expected, I think Italian is one of the best cuisines in the world). I also love the Antiguan buffet brunch on Sundays. There’s also Margarita, a Mexican style restaurant that opens every day for dinner. I am a lover of all things Mexico, so just this is enough for qualifying Jolly Beach as an incredible Antigua all inclusive! There are also plenty of bars to match the restaurants.

As if the amazing beach were not enough, there are two swimming pools, a spa (at additional costs) and a wellness center, and a wide variety of tours are on offer for guests at an additional cost. Water-sports that can be practiced include hobiecat sailing, windsurfing and even pedal boats. There’s also a gym, tennis and even basketball courts. Last but not least, there’s a Kids and Teenz Club, so that parents know they can take a break from their children.

South Point Antigua
The perfect place to stay if you are looking for more of a homey feeling and atmosphere.
This resort feels more like a boutique hotel. It’s part of the Antigua Yacht Club Marina in Falmouth Harbour. Thanks to its location you get incredible views of the bay.

The rooms are all suites, each incredible beautiful. 23 of them are open plan units, others have two bedrooms. The overall impression is that of renting luxury apartments rather than actual hotel rooms. All of the units have a perfectly equipped kitchen, in case you decide to cook your own meals.
But worry not! The chef of the resort is available to cook for you. There is a Mediterranean and a Middle-Eastern restaurant, and a sushi bar.
The hotel boasts a swimming pool and a private beach, where you can practice all sorts of water sports.

Cocos Hotel Antigua
An adults only resort in Antigua perfect for romantic couples.
Located on a hill overlooking the sea, boasting access to incredible white sand beaches with shallow clear waters, this adults only resort has 34 cottages which have a rustic feel, yet are very luxurious. Each cottage has its own deck, hammocks, chairs – no better place to enjoy the views. Some cottages have a private infinity pool.

The on-site restaurant serves Caribbean staples prepared using strictly local ingredients.

09/09/2021

Try to travel, otherwise
you may become racist,
and you may end up believing
that your skin is the only one
to be right,
that your language
is the most romantic
and that you were the first
to be the first.
Travel,
because if you don't travel then
your thoughts won’t be strengthened,
won’t get filled with ideas.
Your dreams will be born with fragile legs and then you end up believing in tv-shows, and in those who invent enemies
that fit perfectly with your nightmares
to make you live in terror.
Travel,
because travel teaches
to say good morning to everyone
regardless of which sun we come from.
Travel,
because travel teaches
to say goodnight to everyone
regardless of the darkness
that we carry inside
Travel,
because traveling teaches to resist,
not to depend,
to accept others, not just for who they are
but also for what they can never be.
To know what we are capable of,
to feel part of a family
beyond borders,
beyond traditions and culture.
Traveling teaches us to be beyond.
Travel,
otherwise you end up believing
that you are made only for a panorama
and instead inside you
there are wonderful landscapes
still to visit.
- Gio Evan, poet and songwriter.
