Minimalism or Maximalism? Why not both?

Saguaro National Park is separated into two districts, the western Tucson Mountain District (TMD) and the eastern Rincon Mountain District (RMD). When asked what the differences, the main three that visitors will notice are the loop drives (TMD is gravel, RMD is paved), the mountains (TMD goes up to around 4,600ft where at RMD goes up to just over 8,800ft), but most striking of all is the difference in Saguaro density!

Every 10 years we conduct a Saguaro census, thanks in part to many dedicated citizen scientists, in which we diligently count all the Saguaros in a series of 45 4-ha plots, along with 11 historic 2-ha plots. This past count, the mean number of Saguaros per plot in RMD was 350 whereas the mean number per plot in TMD was 626. Some extreme ends of the count revealed plots as low as 56 in a plot at RMD and as high as 1,746 in a plot at TMD! Though, while TMD has quite a bit more cacti, the Saguaro at RMD tend to be much taller at a younger age compared to their western counterparts. This is believed to be due to both the increase in rainfall at RMD, as well as a reduced amount of competition between Saguaro roots. So, no matter if you want to see a forest of Saguaro, or stand at the base of a towering giant, we've got a spot for you! 🌵❤️

What a nice surprise finding this little hedgehog cacti in bloom!

The sun is extra warm this time of year but we appreciate taking things slower in the summer.

Soaking up the sun, lounging in the pool, marveling at the monsoon storms, and appreciating how green the desert is from all the rain.
