It has the clearest water and the cleanest beach, with only a small selection of quite exclusive resorts there. It is sometimes also called “Shark Bay” for the number of black-tip reef sharks you can snorkel among.

Pha Jun Jaras is the viewpoint of viewpoint which can be seen A huge chunk of Ang Thong National Marine Park. Even though “the viewpoint of viewpoints” sounds a bit corny, it seems fitting once you see the ocean sparkle around the jungled limestone cliffs in the distance. It’s almost 500 metres of vertical climbing to get to the top, all on pretty good stairs. Most people will spend 30-45 minutes getting up there and a little less to get down again. Set aside extra time for photos.

Wat Phra Yai

The best known and most famous of all the landmarks on this island is the Big Buddha temple. Sitting just off the corner of Koh Samui on a little tiny island is a 12 meter tall statue of Buddha in a seated position. The local name for the temple is Wat Phra Yai and it is connected to the main island by a causeway. Made of gold and sitting in the Mara position it shows a time when Buddha was rejecting all temptations that were forced upon him. When you fly into Koh Samui the statue is usually the first thing that you will spot due to its prominent location. There are a few food and amulet stalls at the temple which are also worth looking at either when you arrive or depart.

Samrong Beach and Thongson Bay

Samrong Beach and Thongson Bay are the northernmost destinations in Samui. Lying side by side on the small cape between Big Buddha and Choeng Mon beaches, they offer splendid views to Koh Phangan located some 10 kilometres away. Both these coves are easily accessible as they host a good choice of hotels, from Melati Resort to Arayaburi Boutique Resort to NB Villa Saa just to name a few. These two coves (three, if you count the self-explanatory ‘Naturism Beach’, situated 100 metres east of Thongson Bay) are simply beautiful and feature clear crystal waters, powdery white sand, and the feeling like you have your very own private beach.

Naga Pearl Farm and Shop

It is not only coconuts, that Koh Samui abounds in. Here, real pearls are grown, too. To be exact, a pearl farm is situated on one of tiny satellite-islands of Koh Samui – Koh Matsum. The pearls, cultivated there, are sold in a small shop ‘Naga’s Pearl’, situated in the south of the island, in the district of the beach Thong Krut. You can see the photos of the farm on the shop’s walls, thanks to which a customer gets an idea where sea pearls come from. The shop is small, but it has something to admire. In shop windows earrings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets, rings and separate pearls, spherical and of sophisticated shapes, ‘baroque’, are on display. As for colour, we noticed jewelries made of pearls of white colour, pink, light grey and dark grey with a green hue, which are called ‘peacock’s eye’. Snaps are made of silver, some of them have spherical shape, some – flower shape. If you are not ready for purchasing a necklace, which costs 10000 bahts, you might as well buy souvenirs, made of mother-of pearl.

This ancient temple would be the Guardian of the ancient “White Marble Buddha”, which many believe, and especially the resident monks, that it would be several hundred years old. It is also home to the “Secret Hall of Buddhas”, a small “chapel” containing countless small statues, the largest of which is 3 meters and remains in a lying position. These statues are of great value, and are the object of much desire. Also, the doors of the Hall are locked, only a monk can open the doors on request.

WAT KHIRI WONGKARAM, It’s a beautiful white temple that has some remarkable works of art and unique architecture. The roof of the temple is made of red, green and yellow tiles, while at the entrance to the monument, sits a small statue of Buddha sitting. Like other temples in Koh Samui, Wat Kiri Wongkaram has a picturesque and peaceful setting. It is easily accessible from Ring Road 4169, some 3.5 kilometers from the main road. The Wat is also famous for its mummified monk, the renowned Loung Por Ruam. Visitors can admire the individual who is kept inside a glass cage, sitting in the same position for 25 years.

Lat Ko Viewpoint is one of the best and most straightforward places in Samui to catch sight of a great panoramic view on the sea and on the beautiful east coast of the island. Located right by the side of the Ring Road between Lamai and Chaweng, you can park your bike and walk along the paved path overlooking the coastline, going down to the sea. The greyish beige of the boulders, the turquoise water, and the clear blue skies above Chaweng offer a really pleasant sight. Bang Po

Bang Po is a beach with fine and light sandy blanket. Right by the water the sand is a bit on coarse side and it is reddish; as for the seabed, the sand there is of light creamy shade and dust-like, which makes an impression of clamminess. The beach is not very wide: about 20 meters throughout its all length. The average depth near the shore is up to knees, in some places – shallower, in other places – deeper, there are spinneys of corals along the whole coast line, they are about 150 meters wide, so one can’t go into the water farther than a couple of meters.

Koh Mae Koh

Koh Mae Koh is one of the few islands at which you stop by during a speedboat day trip to Angthong Marine National Park. It takes about an hour to get there from Samui. This beautifully preserved island features two viewpoints. The first one can easily be visited during most day trips as a large and relatively easy to climb staircase takes you to its peak in a matter of minutes. The second viewpoint is far more impressive, but you need almost 45 minutes to get there. You need to ask first if the tour you want to book stays long enough at Koh Mae Koh to reach this outstanding viewpoint. Note that the path to reach it is quite demanding and somewhat perilous.
