e the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region VI, the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) of DOT and the Local Government of Malay have teamed up last July 23, 2021, to put together the alliance all in the hopes of leveling up one of the World’s Best Islands to catering to resilient Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) markets. Its aim is to give everyone more reasons why people should pack-up, and set their sights on the island as the best place for MICE in a tropical paradise. The establishment of the Boracay MICE Alliance will allow focused efforts in creating sustainable tourism development projects while synergizing stakeholders to create long-term solutions and opportunities for all partners. According to Elmar Lina, President of BMA, “driving awareness, readiness, and expansion of product offerings will be very crucial in making the island competitive with other MICE destinations”. The Alliance will also work closely with DOT Region VI and the TPB to ensure that support for areas of improvement will also be given attention. Along with that, the group also aims to promote executions that will highlight eco-sensitive experiential events that will optimize ideations and celebrations while featuring all the best that Boracay can offer. Of the other innovations the group will introduce will be its efforts in embracing SMARTourism in the likes of contactless and online transactions, virtual tours, and implementation of hybrid meetings to attend to the guests present not just on the island but as well as coming from the other parts of globe through multiple platforms. The team has started identifying some key areas that will need immediate improvements to achieve the said strategic goal and will be sharing these to all partners as soon as it is available. Part of its immediate deliverable is to aid the readiness of its ports and all establishments to receive guests while enforcing timely protocols. While the local vaccination rate is already at 91.09% across its tourism workers and 62.78% of its population on the island as of last October 24, securing the Safety Seal certification and World Travel Tourism Council Safe Travels stamp will also be a must for all establishments to win the confidence of all guests who considers visiting. As the island progress, more efforts will be made to create the assurance that holding events in Boracay will be a safe option for organizers, attendees, service providers and most especially its locals. As of today, the island can accommodate roughly around 28,000 guests at lodging capacity through its 12,391 room keys across 294 accredited accommodation establishments. With updates from the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) for the management of emerging infectious diseases in the Philippines, the island is now under alert level 2 giving establishments and guests the ability to loosen up on restrictions as compared to previous months. But still due to the ongoing pandemic, the Boracay MICE Alliance will continue to be conscious of the challenges that various sectors are faced with and will work closely with DOT-VI in providing firsthand insights and solutions that will be relevant in the preparation of a MICE-ready Boracay island.
