We truly enjoyed our time in the mountains of Slovenia last month! Below are photos from Lake Bled and our drive through Triglav National Park, the Vrsic Pass and Soca Valley. I snuck in a few from Vintgar Gorge too! The beauty of this part of the world is beyond words. Highland traveling, honeymoon edition! Enjoy!

This is AWESOME! Take a few minutes to watch what the National Park Service is doing for veterans. We thank them for all of their service!

Veterans make up 5.9% of the American working age population. But in the National Park Service, veterans make up 26% of the workforce. Laws that give preference to veterans in the hiring process make it easier for them to land jobs in government agencies and historically the National Park Service ha...

While technically not a National Park (the recently added Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis, MO brings the number of National Parks up to 60), the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the 400 units managed by the National Park Service and is classified as a National Parkway. It stretches a total of 469 miles within Virginia and North Carolina, connecting the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. We have decided to go to Croatia and Slovenia for our honeymoon, but also decided that waiting until next May/June is the much more ideal time to visit. So, what did we decide to do to decompress immediately after the wedding? A driving trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway! I'm very excited about it and can't wait to share Appalachia in the fall with everyone!

Boy, did I ever learn this lesson the hard way, except mine was stolen from my luggage when I had to leave it on the bottom floor of the double decker bus in Scotland! Dumb move on my part, yes, but in my defense I was working off of two hours of sleep in two days- I simply can't sleep on a plane. When I finally got my replacement to get back to the States I swear I must have done a "ppc" as I dubbed it (personal property check) every hour to make sure I still had it! It's a pretty scary thing to be without your passport abroad.

As an A (++) personality type, I am a planner. Can’t help it. I actually enjoy sitting down at my computer with 25 screens up at a time, a guidebook in my lap, a glass of wine sitting next to me and an excel spreadsheet pulled up somewhere behind those internet screens planning my next vacation. This next big vacation is a special one though as it will be my honeymoon. [ 329 more words ]

As the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, the views from the top of Mount Mitchell are guaranteed to impress. Just a short hike on a paved walkway from the parking lot is an observation deck that gives you 360° views of the mountain range. Weather changes very quickly at this altitude which can affect both your view and your experience, so always keep an eye on the sky and be aware of our surroundings. [ 386 more words ]
