So whilst trying to find out how tall the actually is, led me to an interesting book covering the history of this and all the other local churches.
From a long struggle trying to find a permanent location the Melville United free church had moved many times over the years. Leaving the established church in 1756, it took til 1900 to confirm it’s location, Designed by architects Messrs Brown And Watt, interestingly one doing the exterior and one the interior! A foundation stone was laid on the 5th October 1901, the building opened for public worship on the 3rd January 1903.
More research is required for the interim history as we believe the church became a music venue before being converted to flats in 1983.
The image above is cropped fom a sketch within the book, compared to as it is today, interestingly some of the tower windows may have been later additions as they don’t appear in the sketch!
Need to go to the town house and review the records when we get a chance!
