Skipper Haakon reports:

Hoy there, a little late update from Alma⚓

So the last 3 weeks Alma did two attempts to reach the east coast of Greenland more accurately Tassilaq.

1st attempt we got stopped by very close drift ice about 95nm of Greenlandic coast. After about 24h of trying to navigate through the ice and due to the incoming hurricane we were forced to sail back to Iceland 🧊

2nd attempt, 1 week later with new crew and much better ice conditions we still met even closer drift ice approx 15nm from Greenlandic coast about the same time as we got a gearbox malfunction and was forced to turn around yet again. With NE wind direction developing to E and later SE our best course with the sails was straight S and led us approx 200nm S of Iceland where we drifted/sailed slowley away from any form of land for 3 days while waiting for better winds 🌊

Eventually we got a tow from a German research vessel who were going to Reykjavik.

Although it was not an emergency, the weather didn't look favorable for the next week and we very much appreciated the tow so thanks to Merian s. Maria🩵

So, now Alma is docked in Reykjavik waiting for a new crew and good winds to take us back to Northern Norway. Greenland was not meant to be this year, we surely did everything we could to get there but when mother nature says "no", that's a force not to be reckoned with. In the end we are very happy that we managed to get out of the ice and stormy weather without any damage to the ship or crew 🙏

And with new stories and lessons learned Amundsen Adventure lives on to sail another day ⛵🧭

Here's some footage from the ice, that only got closer and thicker as we went. More content from the trip will be posted in the coming days and weeks. Although we didn't get to our planned destination we did have an awesome experience, so i will be posting a lot of that in the near future 📷

International Women’s day 8. March 2024

❤️⚓️❤️⚓️❤️⚓️❤️⚓️❤️⚓️❤️⚓️❤️⚓️❤️

Little has been written about women in polar history.

Monica Kristensen from Norway 🇳🇴 has in common with Roald Amundsen 🇳🇴 and the Swede Salomon August Andrée 🇸🇪 - that she was the main character in a polar drama that caused death - but it is Amundsen and Andrée who have been given hero status.

Monica Kristensen broke barriers because she was the first woman to realize polar ambitions in line with her male predecessors.

That not everything she bet on was successful does not make her any less significant.
Monica Kristensen inspires women.

Do you challenge your own limits - and want to go with us on expeditions ?

Welcome aboard ❤️

13. December

Why do we celebrate Lucia?
In Norway we celebrate Lucia on 13 December with saffron-yellow stuffed cats and lit candles. Here is the story behind the tradition.

The background for today's Lucia celebration probably stems from several places - both from Christian traditions and from old folk beliefs.

A Christian explanation is that Lucia was a Roman virgin from a rich family from Syracuse in Sicily. She was martyred during the Christian persecutions under Emperor Diocletian in the year 303. Lucia was accused of rebelling against the emperor's laws and had persuaded her mother to give her entire dowry to the poor. It is said that she died firmly in her faith with a burning lamp in her hand. This is how she got the name Lucia, which means bright.

We can also look to Germany to find part of the explanation for today's way of celebrating Lucia. The German "Christkindchen" was a girl dressed in white with a paper crown and burning wax candles on her head who handed out Christmas presents to the children. In old ecclesiastical "star games" in the Middle Ages, a white-clad angel also appeared - a possible precursor to our Lucia.

Lucia in Norway
In this country, "Lucien night" or "Lussin night" has also been called "Lussi langnatt" because, according to the old Julian calendar, it was believed to be the longest night of the year, i.e. the winter solstice. According to old folklore, all kinds of evil forces were unleashed on this night as light and darkness fought for power. The mark on the old Norwegian primstave is often a candle, a fire, a flame or a cup.

Lussi appears both as an indication of the time and as an underground vette. Lussinnight ushered in the Christmas season, which was seen as the most dangerous time for humans and animals throughout the year. This was also supposedly the only night of the year that the animals could talk to each other. No one was supposed to be outside under the open sky on "Lussinatten".

The dangerous womanizer Lussi was out this night, and she was used to frighten the children. Lussi made sure that the work was on schedule for the Christmas celebration. All the rough work for Christmas such as threshing and spinning had to be completed and beer brewing had to be underway. She checked the Christmas food, tasted the Christmas beer, watched the lefsbaking in the firehouse and shouted down the chimney pipe: "Inkje bryggja, inkje baga, inkje big eld hava!" When Lussi discovered that things were not as they should be, she became enraged and could destroy the pipe.

Are your work on schedule for the Christmas celebration? 🎁🎄
