Lily had an appointment with the donkey-whispering farrier, Shane! We're 2-3 trims away from fully healthy hooves!

Lily had never met a farrier who could work with her without sedation, she even tried to kick her regular humans when we worked on her feet, but she took to Shane right away. Best farrier ever!

I was admiring the markings on this adorable jumping spider when they did me a favor and pounced on a fly! Just another reason to love these guys. I hope you grow big and fat, little one. Eat ALL the flies.

Jasmine and Yuri have been waiting all year for this morning! Bindweed Turret Bee (Diadasia bituberculata) is finally out as its host, Calystegia purpurata, is open!

Sometimes these two are out and about in May, so we've been waiting with baited breath for our first sightings.

It's National Rescue Dog Day!
Every day, we are all grateful that Yuri met Abby while volunteering in a shelter in Alabama. Abby rescues us on a daily basis, from loneliness, boredom, and inactivity. Yuri said she may not be a herding dog (the sheep chase her, actually) but she could still help. He was never more right. We love you, Abby!

Chaparral pea, Pickeringia montana, is an underrated native shrub. It fixes nitrogen, supports pollinators, and provides this lovely pop of color in late spring.

The specific epithet "montana" refers to mountainous habitats, not the state. This is a California endemic. I have seen "Montana chaparral pea" used in some nurseries, but don't let a mishmashing of common name and misinterpreted specific epithet deter you from bringing this plant to your California garden.

May 8th is World Donkey Day!
It's also almost Lily's 1 yr anniversary home from the hospital after a long, complicated colic surgery and recovery. We're so grateful she spent the day doing what she loves and rolling as often as she likes. Here's to many more years, Miss Lily!

My pictures are not doing them justice, but there are dozens of the Adela septentrionella moth flitting about today! This is one of the so-called fairy longhorn moths, and the antennae are so long, they don't look real. The host is cream bush, one of my favorite native shrubs! I love seeing signs of recovery. As the shrubs recover, so do the creatures which depend upon them.

Hike canceled 4/14!
We don't mean to be fair weather friends, but you'll enjoy your hike more if you can reschedule to one of our future dates. We recieved almost an inch of rain on 4/13, and it looks like low clouds will shroud us and steal our views on Sunday, April 14th.

Totoro passed surrounded by family, with Whitney cuddling him and the rest of us petting him and assuring him that he will forever be loved and remembered.

We will never forget you, Totoro. Thank you for the years of joy.

Our beloved Totoro is back at UC Davis and not doing well. Please join us in hoping that they can help him. We have no idea his true age, but we know we're not ready to say goodbye.

Totoro update: our little gentleman is improving and responding to treatment. He isn't ready to come home, but he can swallow again and he is off of the IV.

The staff at UC Davis put his beard in pigtails to keep it out of the mash he has been eating.

Please keep Totoro in your hearts. He's at UC Davis struggling to swallow.

Totoro is the most gentle soul. He loves going to events to see people, and even likes Halloween events with kids in inflatable costumes. He brings everyone who knows him so much joy.

Please join us in hoping and praying that the vets can find the problem and help Totoro have many more happy years with us. He's our favorite little gentleman and we need him in our lives.

Pictures: Totoro as a Viking for Halloween, Totoro in the tub, and Totoro's beard looking magnificent.

Westley is home! He's not happy that he can't play with his brothers yet, but at least he's home and feeling much more himself. Can we brag for a minute about how well behaved he is in the car? He just relaxes and looks out the window.

It's always sad to lose a tree. They were growing before us, and we always hope they will continue to watch over the land after we are gone.

One of our favorite photos from Jasmine and Yuri's wedding took place under this tree at the edge of the wedding meadow.

Westley (Totoro and Dulce's eldest kid) is at UC Davis awaiting surgery for the goat equivalent of kidney stones. It's a pretty routine procedure, but please keep him in your thoughts.

I'm in the middle of a great horned owl love triangle!

I'm doing midnight sheep checks (lambing season is imminent!), and I can hear three great horned owls flirting and calling around me.

Last year, we seemed to have one solitary GHO. I hope this year a pair of these will choose to stay! No pictures because even with the full wolf moon, it's overcast and they're well camouflaged.
