Did you see the Jabberwock in Broad Street for Alice's Day today? 😍

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!"
wrote Lewis Carroll,
"The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!"

Today the Jabberwock clearly wasn't in a biting mood, but was enjoying dancing with children who'd braved the weather to take part in Alice-themed activities. πŸ˜€

The name 'Manu' is because the design is based on a French medieval manuscript, "Le Roman d'Alexandre".

If you look closely enough, you'll see Sian's personal addition to it ! πŸ˜‰
No, we won't spoil it, you'll have to come and see it for yourself πŸ˜€

These beautiful madrigals have been performed by students for hundreds of years...

These are then followed by traditional Morris dancing as well as Scottish country dancing in the streets of Oxford. πŸ₯°πŸ₯³

Did you know that "Radcliffe Square" isn't only an area of Oxford but also the name of a Scottish country dance ? It was written by a former Oxford student, Todd Pierce.

You can see some dancers performing it in the first picture πŸ“Έ.

We all hope you enjoyed the festivities πŸ˜€

Happy Easter! πŸ˜„πŸ‡

As the city receives bank holiday visitors and members of the Oxford Guild of Tour Guides hit the streets with their tours, we have had a bit of fun amongst our members trying to find a suitable name for a group of guides. We all know the collective noun for a group of goldfinches (a charm), then there's a flock of sheep, a herd of horses, a pod of dolphins; the list is amazing, using language imaginatively to describe such gatherings.

Here's what we came up with as a collective name for guides. What do you think about a gaggle - or a gabble - of guides? A glory of guides, a pride of guides - it rhymes! A murmuration of guides! An illumination of guides! What can you come up with? πŸ€”πŸ€ͺ

The Oxford Guild of Tour Guides recommends the stunning exhibition currently on display in the Weston Library on 'Chaucer, Here and Now'. Come and see the oldest extant manuscript of 'The Canterbury Tales', some beautifully illuminated versions, one showing a man writing who may be Chaucer himself, and representations of the 'Tales' from different periods, different countries and even in different media.

Did you know that one of Chaucer's pilgrims was an Oxford student, the 'clerk of Oxenforde', "still a student though/ One who had taken logic long ago." He's diligent and scholarly; "Whatever money from his friends he took/ He spent on learning or another book" is how he's described in the translation made by Nevill Coghill, a former Merton Professor of English Literature at Oxford University and member of The Inklings discussion group .

Chaucer was something of a polymath. He also wrote an instruction manual on how to use an astrolabe, a medieval navigation instrument. You can see an astrolabe similar to the one Chaucer described in the History of Science Museum in Oxford, among a wonderful collection of astrolabes from India, the Middle East and Europe, including one that belonged to Queen Elizabeth I - perfect for browsing after you've seen the Chaucer exhibition!

This is also a good opportunity for us to thank Marion Turner, curator of this exhibition for the fantastic private tour she gave us a few weeks ago πŸ˜ƒ

200 years ago today an Oxford geologist, Professor William Buckland, made a scientific breakthrough, becoming the first person to scientifically describe and name a dinosaur.

He used fossilised bones to identify 'Megalosaurus', meaning 'giant lizard' - a 9 metre long dinosaur from the Jurassic period. Previously some scientists believed that huge fossil bones proved that giants once existed.

Today you can see the fossils in Oxford's Museum of Natural History, in front of which, are casts of Megalosaurus footprints taken from fossilised prints found locally at Ardley Quarry. And the only 'giants' are the heads outside the Sheldonian Theatre on Broad Street!
