Close to Bohinj 😏

Discovery of the gorge

Vintgar Gorge was discovered in 1891 by photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and Gorje mayor and cartographer Jakob Žumer. It was impassable and inaccessible in its natural form, but due to the tourist development of Bled, more than 500 metres of bridges and galleries were built in 1893 and the gorge was regulated and open for public. Galleries are called after the person who discovered the gorge, Žumer, thus they are called Žumer Galleries; a plaque is also visible at a rock wall to commemorate him.
Due to its natural beauty, Vintgar has been ranked among the most important tourist sights in Slovenia, the number of visitors has been increasing every year.

👉Although Slovenia 🇸🇮 is a small country, it is very diverse, with significant diversity in nature and culture and tradition 💚
👉To prove here is a video with folklore groups from the whole of Slovenia.
Two of them are from Bohinj as well. First one KUD Bohinj from Bohinjska Bistrica (📹2:07) and one KUD Triglav from Srednja vas v Bohinju (📹11:01).
👉Through the whole video, you'll see different costumes and dances from divergent regions of Slovenia.
👉At the end of the video (📹12:38), some festivals are mentioned where groups from other countries are included as guests.

Today we celebrate Reformation Day in Slovenia, which is also a work-free day.
For us, it is a significant holiday because Protestantism with Primož Trubar brought us first books 📙 in our Slovene 🇸🇮 language.
You need to know that our nation was through centuries under (mostly) german-speaking nation.
And in Primož Trubar's time, the services in the churches were only run in German and Latin language. His idea was that people need to know how to read and be able to attend service in their own language. They need to understand the Bible and the message to be able to prepare for the apocalypse.

We, Slovene, are very proud of our nature, language and culture. At least we should be.
For me, Reformation Day is our holiday and not Halloween. Sorry ;)
Instead of making a pumpkin 🎃, I am taking you for a ride through autumn 🍁🍂 forests in Bohinj.

Probably you've heard me explaining about the Bohinj glacier on some of my tours.
But my explanation was always concise, as it is hard to explain it if you can't see it exactly.

So, this video is for those of you interested in the Bohinj glacier more in-depth.

* The places mentioned on the map:
- Ribčev laz [my village, where the Bohinj lake starts, and where the small church of St John and the stone bridge are - I run three HeyGo tours there]
- Bohinjska Bistrica [the biggest village in Bohinj, I name it the capital of the municipality of Bohinj, where I run a "The Bohinj Railway, a Window to the World" tour]
- Triglavska jezera [Triglav lakes - The Triglav Lakes Valley, from 1,294 m (4,245 ft) to 1,993 m (6,539 ft), for comparing, Bohinj lake is 526 m (1,726 ft) above sea level]
- Bled [where the most famous lake in Slovenia is, the one with island with a church on it and with the castle above]
- Šobec [a well-known camping place with a small lake, and good restaurant, very nice to visit also if you are not staying there]
- Lesce [this is where you go off the highway if you are travelling by car to Bled and Bohinj; there is also a small sport airport]
- Radovljica [a nice medivel town]
- Aljažev Stolp [Aljaž tower - the small but well-known tower on the summit of Triglav, our highest mountain]

In Bohinj, we hosted some important and well-known people.
In 1967 Mrs Agatha Christie was spending her vacation in Bohinj as well. And of course, we are very proud of that.
Especially as she said, that "Bohinj is too beautiful for murder" 🤩

This is her second interview during her stay in Hotel Bellevue. Although she was planning to avoid them 😉
The first one, with the famous answer, was in the Slovene daily newspaper.
