The bird cliffs of Alkefjellet is a bit like a bustling high-rise apartment complex in a big city. There are thousands of birds occupying these cliffs each summer, nestling into the rocky outcrops, working to create the perfect home for their families. Different species will nest at different levels of the cliffs and everywhere you look, there is always something going on! Truly one of Svalbard's greatest spectacles, and the team this year got to witness this place, in what seems to be, the PERFECT conditions🤩🥳

An absolute crowd favorite, the Atlantic Puffin. Known for their colorful bill and impressive eating habits, these birds can be seen around Svalbard during the summer months, foraging on the nutrient-rich waters and providing a great spectacle for visitors of the area to enjoy. ✨

Getting ready to ! Did you know polar bears are classified as marine mammals? This is because they rely on the ocean for food and have evolved to become incredible swimmers because of it! The longest recorded swim by a polar bear is 687 km over 9 days! This behavior is becoming more common as climate change reduces sea ice, forcing polar bears to swim longer distances to survive.

The ATE team is gearing up for the first expedition of the season, embarking in Svalbard in just under a week! We are so excited for the group of guests traveling with us this summer, and could not be more thrilled for the adventures that lay ahead! This time of year, up north is fantastic. We are just at the tail end of spring with plenty of sea ice to explore and hopefully an abundance of wildlife and memorable experiences to follow! Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible mommas out there!

Did you know that many of the great whale species will migrate half the distance of the globe in order to give birth to their calves. The mom will usually be fasting during this time, relying on her own energy reserves for survival. She will nurse her calf until the they have built up a thick enough blubber reserve to make the migration back to cooler waters. Talk about a momma that deserves some recognition!

Hi everyone!

Arctic Tern Expeditions has one cabin (two people) left on a 3-11 June, 2024 Svalbard expedition! This is a super special experience on a 12-passenger in the Norwegian high arctic. We're all in on making the most of our Arctic voyage on the MV Villa, and will be prioritizing lots of wildlife viewing, epics hikes, and an excellent time onboard :)
