Our November 2024 Desktop Wallpaper shows a Humpback Whale as it emerges from the depths of the Southern Ocean off the coast of Kaikōura. Humpback whales are Baleen whales - whales which use keratinaceous baleen plates (or "whalebone") in their mouths to sieve planktonic creatures from the water.

A big shout out to the team of skilled pilots and knowledgable staff at You guys are awesome :)

Thanks to extraordinarily generous support from The Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance - The OPERA, New Zealand Sea Lion Trust is pleased to announce that the total reward in respect of the Catlins sea lion shootings has now been increased to $11,000.

The New Zealand Sea Lion Trust (NZSLT) has increased the reward it is offering for information leading to a conviction for the shooting of a young female pup, in light of evidence that the pup’s mum, Jade, has also been shot and killed.

NZSLT is extremely grateful for its incredible supporters and donors at what has been a very sad time for our team. From the messages of encouragement NZSLT has received, it is clear how outraged the community feels about killing of these peaceful animals.

NZSLT appreciates people getting behind our appeal to seek justice for Jade and her pup. They are helping to send a strong message that this abhorrent behaviour is not acceptable in New Zealand.

Our October 2024 Desktop Wallpaper showcases the Hoiho (Yellow-eyed Penguin) - the 2024 New Zealand Bird of the Year. Being one of the rarest penguins in the world with just 1,700 pairs remaining and with the fear of them becoming extinct on mainland New Zealand within 10 - 20 years, it's great to see the spotlight on them.

Soon the Northern Royal albatross chicks will start fledging and leave Taiaroa Head (Dunedin - NZ), a place they've called home for the past 8 months every since they hatched.

Seen in this video is one such chick testing his flying gear before he takes to the skies for the very first time. Once he's airborne he'll fly to the waters off the coast of Chile (a journey that's around 9,500 kms) and will stay out at sea, and not see land, for the next five years riding the Roaring Forties and the Furious Fifties. Today is World Albatross Day.

The theme for 2024 is 'Marine Protected Areas (MPA)' - There is a vital connection between albatrosses and the ocean but the ocean is also the place where they face their main threat – fisheries. MPAs can assist in improving the conservation status of albatrosses by safeguarding their breeding habitats, critical areas along their migration routes and by regulating activities like fishing within these protected zones.

19062024 shows a Northern Royal Albatross in the foreground (Endangered) and a Southern Royal Albatross in the background (Vulnerable) as they glide above the waters of the Southern Ocean.

Clicking for Conservation

Photography started off as a hobby for me but pretty soon it turned into a passion and I have been doing Wildlife and Bird photography for close to ten years. Having grown up on National Geographic magazines and Discovery Channel, it’s no surprise that my heart and passion lies in Wildlife / Bird photography. I am very passionate about the conservation of our Wildlife / Birdlife that calls this planet ‘Home’. We, as the most intelligent and advanced species to inhabit this Earth, have a moral obligation to preserve what we have NOT destroy it. I primarily use my work to raise money for Conservation - hence doing my bit through my photography. If each of us did our little bit in our own very special way, think of the collective effect it will have on the environment, OUR environment.

I have been fortunate in that some of my work has been published in various newspapers, magazines and websites both in New Zealand and around the world.

The latest opportunity that I have been fortunate to have some of my work published in is ‘The Hunters’ by Debbie Stewart - a landmark book published by Penguin Random House New Zealand and due to be launched on the 28th of May, 2018. This very first book of its kind in New Zealand presents all of Aotearoa’s amazing Birds of Prey - from the extinct Giant Eagle Hōkioi to the swooping Kārearea, soaring Kāhu and the secretive Ruru. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to Wingspan, New Zealand’s National Bird of Prey Centre, an organisation that works tirelessly for the conservation and preservation of New Zealand’s Birds of Prey including the Kārearea (New Zealand Falcon).

At this point I’ll stop talking and hand you over to my camera and I’ll let it do the talking from here on...
