From When Jigawa State was carved out of from Kano State in 1991, small town Dutse was chosen as its capital, despite the presence of larger cities. One of the reasons was the prestige and long history of its traditional Emirate, one of five in which Jigawa is divided. This history is reflected in the sheer size of the Garu Palace compound, where the Emir of Dutse holds court. This elaborate maze of buildings reflecting different styles and eras and the treasure trove of contents and activities it holds are impossible to show in one post. I will start with the exteriors to set the scene.

FULANI MAN 🦯
We met some Fulani herders along the Kano-Maiduguri road and they let wear their hat!
The Fulani people are a group that traditionally herds animals throughout much of West Africa. They are the largest nomadic pastoralist ethnic group in the world.
Fulani herders wear a straw hat seen pictured and always have their walking stick with them. They go everywhere with this stick even on an airplane without their cattle, they must have the stick. Many men also carry a machete-like knife as well.
