The only image of a Native American depicted by William Bartram (1739-1823) during his time as a naturalist exploring the "wilds" of the American South, this engraved portrait is the frontispiece of Bartram's "Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee country, the extensive territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy, and the country of the Chactaws," first published in Philadelphia in 1791.

The original sketch Bartram made for this engraving is now in the collections of the American Philosophical Society. Interestingly, that original sketch names this man as "Mico-chlucco/King of the Muscogulges or Criks/call'd the Long Warrior," whereas he is identified more specifically as "King of the Seminoles" in the book engraving.

The Seminole were a group of people who lived in northern Florida, and were part of the larger Creek Confederacy which spanned from the east coasts of present-day Georgia and Florida west to what is now Alabama.

Light can be everything. Inspired by Whistler's paintings, Savannah Nocturne by Eliot Candee Clark (on view ) pictures the historic riverfront with a crepuscular softness. Painted around 1924, Clark wrote of the scene, 'What impressed me most was the soft, enveloping atmospheric light quite different from the contours and strong shadows of New England.'

ART & AMBLE grew out of a passion for sharing Savannah and the surrounding area with family and friends. As an art historian, I’ve been fortunate to live many places studying art, architecture, and languages, and through this experience I’ve made some great friends. I especially love when these friends come to visit, like when Oscar and Klazina came to Savannah from the Netherlands a few years ago. I first met Klazina in Florence over a decade ago, and then lived with her while studying Dutch in Groningen – both times bonding over our love of food and art. So when she came to visit, I had to take her and Oscar to Charleston to (which is the best). And while there, I was also able to show them some secret places from having worked with various collections and clients in the area. There is nothing better than seeing familiar places through new eyes.

Nothing but blue skies! It’s another beautiful day in Savannah.

Speaking of blue, if you are interested in paint materials, consider registered for the virtual lecture tomorrow, March 26 at 6:30pm with Dr. Susan Buck. She’ll be discussing her research into the Owens Thomas House and other historic properties where enslaved people lived and worked. Her research can tell us so much about what these spaces really looked like. To register, DM me or sign up through ’ member page of the Friends .

Have a great day!
