What a day we had on Saturday in the rough bounds of Knoydart!
Scott, Gill and I have now done quite a few hills together, and it was a real privilege to be asked to help them out on their last: Sgurr Mor.
There are not many/any people I know who leave this one to last, but it does provide seclusion, remoteness and wilderness which nicely encapsulates a Munro round!
The forecast for Saturday varied from gopping to apocalyptic and back to manageable/nice. We decided on a dawn raid, and go and see, knowing that we might just have a rainy early morning drive, and be back for Park run.
Driving along it was wet, but the loch was calm, so we unloaded boats and set out. The paddle across was nice and flat, with a force 1-2 head wind until we were 500m from the far shore when it stared to pick up to F3, but all well manageable.
The rain had eased and as we walked up the pristine Buidhe glen, it turned off completely, winner!
A white tail eagle provided a good fly over in the speedy winds above as we ascended, this added nicely to the otter and pine martin which we had seen earlier on the journey.
Cresting the bealach the wind ramped up as expected, but was not horrendous. We made our way steadily up the narrowing ridge towards the summit where a one man guard of honour provided the celebratory pomp as Scott and Gill summited their final Munro 🎊 🎉 🥳 🙌
Pouring Prosecco in 40mph winds was interesting but you have to mark these occasions appropriately!!
Heading back down, a juvenile golden eagle flew over to say well done and we were back to the boats.
The wind had increased to a steady F4, which meant our paddle back took half the time as the paddle there, surfing the waves back down the loch 🌊 🛶
A lovely day with a fabulous couple, who it’s been a real pleasure to be out and about with over the years. Wishing you all the best in Sweden and the future and I’m sure we’ll see each other again some where!
