What a day we had on Saturday in the rough bounds of Knoydart!

Scott, Gill and I have now done quite a few hills together, and it was a real privilege to be asked to help them out on their last: Sgurr Mor.

There are not many/any people I know who leave this one to last, but it does provide seclusion, remoteness and wilderness which nicely encapsulates a Munro round!

The forecast for Saturday varied from gopping to apocalyptic and back to manageable/nice. We decided on a dawn raid, and go and see, knowing that we might just have a rainy early morning drive, and be back for Park run.

Driving along it was wet, but the loch was calm, so we unloaded boats and set out. The paddle across was nice and flat, with a force 1-2 head wind until we were 500m from the far shore when it stared to pick up to F3, but all well manageable.

The rain had eased and as we walked up the pristine Buidhe glen, it turned off completely, winner!

A white tail eagle provided a good fly over in the speedy winds above as we ascended, this added nicely to the otter and pine martin which we had seen earlier on the journey.

Cresting the bealach the wind ramped up as expected, but was not horrendous. We made our way steadily up the narrowing ridge towards the summit where a one man guard of honour provided the celebratory pomp as Scott and Gill summited their final Munro 🎊 🎉 🥳 🙌

Pouring Prosecco in 40mph winds was interesting but you have to mark these occasions appropriately!!

Heading back down, a juvenile golden eagle flew over to say well done and we were back to the boats.

The wind had increased to a steady F4, which meant our paddle back took half the time as the paddle there, surfing the waves back down the loch 🌊 🛶

A lovely day with a fabulous couple, who it’s been a real pleasure to be out and about with over the years. Wishing you all the best in Sweden and the future and I’m sure we’ll see each other again some where!

The one when the weather gods said no.

Yesterday we were finally thwarted by the weather. We knew it had rained a lot over night and so the crossing of the Allt na Dunaiche may be tricky and/or impassable. As before we went for a look. Upon getting to the “usual” crossing point it was clear it wasn’t going to be possible to get across the burn. We walked up the hill a wee bit more, but with it still raining hard and the winds stronger than forecast in the Coire, and due to increase through the afternoon, it was clear we would not be going up high today.

We turned tail and enjoyed the fantastic waterfalls which, funnily enough, were in full spate and raging.

A wet day to end a wet week, but extremely well done to Janet and Sharron for coming with the right attitude, good fitness and a smile in the face of adversity.

A real pleasure to spend the week in Millport with you both 🤣

This week I’ve been out with Sharron and Janet on their Skye completer Adventure.

We’ve had 4 days together so far, with one more to go tomorrow. The weather has not been kind and we’ve had wet pants most days, but we have managed to get to the summit of all 11 Cuillin Ridge Munro’s, and have (micro) fleeting views on 3 out of 4 days.

We’ve had early starts, late starts, quick walk Ins, slow, steady scrambling and all in all remained pretty flexible. On at least 3 out of 4 days we have done with a “suck it and see” approach, knowing that we may not get our planned objectives. But, through caution and care, we have made things work and usually done so with a smile!

Well done both, some hard graft going on this week, mountaineers badge well and truly earned!

Monday was an adventurous one!

I was back out with team extreme, looking for more adventures.

We headed to Loch Maree in the North West, with the aim of climbing Slioch on its North shore.

The weather forecast looked windy on the tops, but ok on the lochs. We paddled the open water crossing on one of Scotlands most beautiful lochs, with the tops on cloud.

Pulling the boats up on the lee shore of the beach we walked the short sharp steep ascent up into the beautiful hanging Coire and onto the summit. As we ascended so did the clouds, giving us impressive and expansive views across to the Fisherfields and beyond.

We extended the walk and continued along the very beautiful ridge line to Sgurr and Tuill Bhain, before descending and returning to the awaiting boats.

It was windier on our return but nothing the experienced team couldn’t handle. 💪 🛶 ⛰️

Another great day, in lovely company and spectacular scenery, thanks all!

Another monster couple of days with the dynamic duo of Jacqui and Rosie 💪 ⛰️ 🏔️ ⛰️ ⛰️ ⛰️ ⛰️

As ever, the best views are at the top of the hardest climbs and the Fisherfield 6 contain some of the hardest to reach views in Scotland.

Over 2 days we covered 45km, 3000m of ascent and the biggest bog in the Highlands 😃

It was the pairs first wild camp and what a way to introduce them! A high camp at Bealach Odhar saw us sheltered from any overnight southwesterlies and we kept our height to save as much of our legs as possible. With views out over to Ruadh Stac Mor, as places to spend the night it ticked a lot of boxes 📦

The final day includes the big walk out, past the bothy at Shenavall and over the infamous bog. With tired legs, sore feet and aching shoulders we dug deep to reach the vans.

An adventure to live long in the memory with numerous wow moments and the occasional ow moments. Extremely well done to the ladies for taking everything in their stride (pun most definitely intended) and enjoying wild camping; it really is all it’s cracked up to be!

2 very different days from our last Skye adventure for Annie and Caroline, distinctly wetter for one!

On Monday we headed to one of my favourite spots, Coire a Ghrunnda. It’s hard to access, so often quiet. It’s surrounded on all sides by impressive crags, cliffs and scree, making it dramatic and imposing. Its gaggle of sea birds, floating on an island in the mists, make it a contradiction.

We walked and talked our way to Sgurr Nan Eag, before retracing our steps, through the clag and back to the campsite. We covered all things, from flora, fauna, geology, geopolitics ad infinitum ⛰️ 🌧️ 😃

Tuesdays forecast was slightly better, but as ever, forecasts are just that. In the hope of shelter from the cool winds and in search of adventure, we headed for The Spur. This striking line up the North West ridge of Sgurr an Fheadain gives some great scrambling with spectacular positions. The mist, rain and wind, added to the imposing feeling, which Annie and Caroline dealt with admirably, even cracking a smile 😃 All too soon we were back amongst the throngs of tourists at the fairy pools, looking back up at an adventure well had!

Another fantastic couple of days with this pair, so great to see the progression and smiles which abound when we’re in the mountains! Thanks both!

Last weekend was a busy one!

Saturday saw Jacqui, Rosie, Pat, David, Bridget and Colleen join me for an epic one way boat trip on Loch Mullardoch. This necessitated a long walk back taking in the 4 Northern Munro’s which the team lapped up in good style, and glorious weather (remember the 🌞!). A truly epic walk which gives outstanding views and a real variety of terrain, from peat hags, rocky ridges, snow patches and rolling hills. A great day, easily matched by the company 👌

On Sunday I was with Anne and Sharon in Glen Coe. The idea was to build confidence for Sharon in scrambling terrain, ahead of a trip to Skye later in the year. Anne (who was the mastermind behind the operation) was along for support, but also to reengage her mountain brain, broaden her own technical tool kit (which is ever expanding) and help crease the repertoire of “get out of jail” techniques.

We used Broad Buttress in ascent and Great gully buttress in descent which give multiple hundreds of meters of scrambling terrain and provide a perfect classroom to incrementally increase the challenge and build confidence.

The ladies performed exceptionally well together, both on and off the rope and the weather gods were kind, even providing a breeze to keep the midgies away. a great day on one of my favourite mountains in a stunning setting, thanks team 🙏

Saturday saw the super speedy duo of Kelly and Doreen out with me for an adventure out west.

With the ladies now having done an impressive array of scramble and mountains, we opted for a place and adventure I was sure wouldn’t have been done before.

We headed across to Ardgour on an early morning ferry and down to Garbh Bheinn. This is one of the most spectacular craggy Corbetts around and with perfect huge gneiss slabs rising up from the glen, provides adventures far above it’s popularity - if it was anywhere else it would be mobbed, but thankfully it’s where it is!

We started up Eagles nest slabs, giving lots of time to get our summer scrambling brains re-engaged and practice some steeper climbing techniques on the variety of rock which these slabs hold. Once at the top, we had a quick snack looking across at our main objective - the great ridge.

This 300m+ ridge line goes at around Diff, and is in a spectacular position, overlooking the Mammores, Ben Nevis, Ardnamurchan peninsula, Glen Coe, the small isles, the Arrochar Alps and all sorts in between, not to mention the climbing; solid rock, impressively steep in parts for the grade and a truly wild, remote feeling 👨‍🍳 👌

You’d think that was enough, but paired with the beautiful weather and standard craic from these pair, I had a blast at “work” (never mind the other two 🤣).

We descended the South East ridge of Sron a Gharbh Choire Bhig, which made a lovely circular route and were back down to the van in double quick time.

Thanks for a great day both, until the next time 💪

Have you been up this “rough mountain”? Which way did you make it to the top?

Sun, scree, mist and midge

Must mean Skye season is upon us 🏔️ ☀️ 🌈

I’ve been out over the past few weekends (in between weeks in school 👨‍🎓) with various different people covering almost all of the beautiful ridge line of the Cuillin and the days have been truly magical, much needed food for the soul.

We always feel lucky to live and work here, but something about the scarcity of days, sleep deprivation, awesome folk and magical weather make’s it all a little more unbelievable.

I’ve never slept so well in the van either 👶

Thanks to those that have been out with us so far, we’re just warming up as I head into the last few weeks of my course, 💡🚇🤞
