I’m headed home after a spectacular time on the Icon of the Seas. I wouldn’t mind a wrong turn to go back to CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s (and Celebrity’s) private island. Whether you want relaxation and privacy or adrenaline pumping excitement, this is the place for you! (I met Captain Rover too! She’s a sweetie!)

Great food. Incredible (and I mean REALLY great) shows. Water slides, mini golf, Crown’s Edge mini adventure course, pickle ball, basketball, swimming pools, and more! If you want adventure, the Icon of the Seas is for you. And if you want relaxation, that’s also here for you! It’s just hard to take a good picture of peace and quiet. If you wanna know more, let me know!

If you suspected a cruise ship, you were right! I am on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas! I have to be honest and say that I expected to be overwhelmed by its size and wanted to give it a try, but did not expect to like it. I was wrong. I love this ship !!! More on all the things to do later!

Said auf wiedersehen to our new friends with sincere hope that we meet again! Explored the tip of the iceberg of what Munich has to offer—Marienplatz, Neue Ratskeller, St. Peter’s Church, and the Church of the Holy Spirit (relics!!). Enjoyed lunch in the Ratskeller and dinner in our super cool hotel, which looked more like an erector set than a building. Last day in Europe and headed home tomorrow. 10/10. I highly recommend this trip!

Sunrise over the Danube, a visit to St Florian Monastery and its gobsmackingly amazing library, and an afternoon walking tour of lovely Linz comprised Tuesday’s activities, the last day of our cruise. Thank you, Avalon Waterways and Robin Pieper, for a glorious experience!

Yesterday’s journey included a visit to Krems, cruising the Wachau Valley, touring Artstetten Castle (which is still lived in and managed by descendants of Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie, whose assassinations started WWI), and a sunset tour of the village of Ybbs. Altogether, it was another lovely day in Austria with Avalon Waterways!

Vienna is grand and glorious and funky and wonderful. We started our day with room service and then toured and ate ourselves silly. And for those who make it through all of the photos—from what I’ve experienced, laundry service on river cruises is quite reasonable, but to each her own! 😂

Today in two parts.

Part I: Budapest. Amazing. Such a beautiful city with both a fascinating and tragic history. There are both cautionary tales and hope to unwrap here.

Part II: We were supposed to board the Avalon Waterways Tranqility II in Budapest today and travel west. Because the Danube is so low between Budapest and Vienna, we were bused to and boarded in Vienna with a modified itinerary instead. Mother Nature happens. Whatcha gonna do other than go with the flow? Or not. (See what I did there? 😂) If we hadn’t done this, we would have missed the gobzillion wind turbines and many greenways. Europe is so far ahead of us in many ways!

My day ended on a lovely note when I entered my stateroom and found flowers from my friend and Avalon rep, Robin Pieper! What a beautiful ending to a lovely day. ❤️

WARNING: If Alaska is on your bucket list, DO NOT GO. There’s no way you’ll check it off of your list and move on. You’ll want to go back again and again, as I do. Each view is more beautiful than the last. The history and culture are fascinating. So much to see and do. I highly recommend it. Our first visit has been incredible. It’s not over yet and it won’t be our last!

Buckled up with the hubs, our kids, and my parents! Headed to Vancouver via Atlanta…and then an Alaskan cruise! We’re already having BiG FUN!!

We played (volleyball!) and played (at Universal!)!! What a fun and exhausting week!

Here are some things I hear and my responses:
(1) Theme parks are crowded.
Not right now!! Crowds are low this summer and this is a great time to go.

(2) It’s hot in the summer.
Have you looked at the temps at home? Oh, and do you have water rides or entire water parks at home? Didn’t think so. This is a great time to go.

(3) Going to a theme park takes months of planning.
This is typically true, but lower crowds equals more availability and, thus, shorter lead times on planning. This is a great time to go.

(4) Theme parks are expensive!
First, there are some great offers available right now. And, how do you put a figure on making priceless memories?! This is a great time to go!

ACE! I am now an Alaska Certified Expert! I am going to Alaska in June and have had several requests for Alaska lately. Since I didn't know a ton about Alaska, I signed up for a course dedicated to travel professionals to learn more. I can't wait to visit; nothing is better than first-hand experience! In the meantime, I've learned a lot through this course and would be happy to apply that newfound knowledge to a custom-crafted trip just for you!
