Buddha in Nirvana"
is one of the most valuable exhibits Of the national Museum of antiquities of Tajikistan. The length of the Buddha statue is 13 meters. The Nirvana Buddha was put on display at the Museum on September 9, 2001, Avesta reports. "Buddha in Nirvana" is a unique exhibit, particularly due to its size. The Buddha statue was discovered during archaeological excavations in the town of Ajina-Teppa, which is located in the Vakhsh district 12 kilometers from the city of Bokhtar, " said bobomullo Bobomulloev, an archaeologist and researcher At the Institute of history, archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic Of Tatarstan. "Excavations have shown that in the pre-Islamic period, people living in this area professed Buddhism, as evidenced by the discovered Buddhist monastery. The statue of Buddha was discovered during excavations in 1966 by the Soviet Professor Boris Litvinsky, " Bobomulloev said. According to him, the statue "Buddha in Nirvana" is a unique historical monument, as well as the statue of Buddha, discovered in the Afghan Bomiyana. "Why do we call the statue of Buddha in Nirvana the most unique? Other similar statues are found inside Buddhist monasteries, or stand outside temples as monuments, and are not the result of archaeological excavations. Our statue was removed from the ground by archaeologists during excavations, " the scientist explained. According to him, along with the Buddha statue, about 600 other items of historical and cultural value were found during excavations in Ajina Teppa. "When the Buddha statue was decided to be moved to Dushanbe, it was divided into 72 fragments, which were stored in the vaults of the Tajik Institute of history and archaeology for almost 30 years»

Khorog is the administrative center of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous region (GBAO) of Tajikistan. And the highest mountain city in the post-Soviet space, 2300 m above sea level.

The city is surrounded on all sides by high mountains and several borders: with Afghanistan, with China and Kyrgyzstan. It is more accurate to say that the city stands on the trade routes of these countries, as it did many years ago. After all, the area where Khorog is located has been known since the early middle ages.

In chronicle sources of the X century, it is mentioned that this was the intersection of numerous caravan routes that led from India and China, as well as to the coast of the Khazar (Caspian) sea.

On a terrace above the banks of River Zerafshan, 1.5km southeast of today's Penjikent, the ruins of a major Sogdian town slowly bake to dust. Looking across the minimal ruins, dubbed the 'Pompeii of Central Asia', it's hard to imagine that from the 5th to 8th centuries this was the site of one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the Silk Road. Thankfully a museum, in a traditional single-room building, brings the former settlement to life .

The site has been extensively excavated over the years and has yielded several important finds, including the so-called 'Penjikent frescoes'. Depicting hunting scenes, these frescoes would once have adorned a palace with pillars carved in the shape of dancing girls. Part of the original fresco sequence is now on display in the museum in Penjikent, part is exhibited in the National Museum in Dushanbe, while the best portion is in the Hermitage in St Petersburg. A site map outside the museum helps to explain the ruins, or just to wander at random among the sun-baked ridges.

31/01/2020

Khujand, also translated as Khudzhand, Khujand or Khojand, was known until 1939 as Khujend; until 1992 as Leninabad (Leninobod), is the second largest city of Tajikistan. It is situated on both sides of the Syr Darya River at the mouth of the Fergana Valley. The population of the city is about 150,000, down from 160,000 in 1989. It is also the capital of the northernmost province of Tajikistan, now called Sughd. It sits at a strategic location at the narrow western end of the Fergana Valley, almost totally surrounded by Uzbekistan. It is connected to Tajikistan proper via the Khudzhand-Dushanbe highway, currently a precarious, high altitude mountain route which is closed in winter; a complete reconstruction of the route, as well as several new tunnels (by Chinese companies) is nearing completion as of 2009.
Despite its transportation difficulties, it represents one of the most important areas of Tajikistan, with its rare fertile agricultural lands, irrigated by the Syr-Darya River, and location near the industrial centers of Uzbekistan. Major industries include Silk production, clothing and footwear manufacturing, and food processing. It has a long, colorful history as well, being at one time under the rule of Persian, Arab, Mongol and other empires; it was once the farthest northern city of Alexander the Great's empire, and was part of the Khanate of Kokand before being annexed by the Russian Empire in 1868. Unfortunately, most of these successive invaders demolished the city, and as a result few ancient treasures remain. After the Bolshevik revolution, the city was given to Uzbekistan for a time, and in 1929 it was made part of the new Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic. Tajikistan was traditionally very clan-based, and during Soviet times, most of the influence and power in the country was held by members of the Sughd clan from Khudjand (though the capital was Dushanbe).
Khujand has a very unique culture, especially within Tajikistan. The visitor will notice upon arrival not only the high level of development of the city, but the relatively large Russian and Uzbek population, far exceeding that of Dushanbe. Rarely here will you see women in traditional dress or men with long beards, and having a drink in the park is not frowned upon. The city's architecture and look has virtually not changed since Soviet days, making a trip to Khujand something of a trip back in time. Most of the Soviet-era buildings have, however, been renovated, and the city's parks and roads are also very well maintained. Despite being the second-largest city, it has a surprisingly relaxing, small-town feel, and its many lush parks and tree-lined boulevards make for a pleasant stay in the center. On hot summer days, the shady parks are full of families eating shashik and relaxing, and Tajik folk music concerts are often provided for entertainment. The real life of the city is the wide Syr-Darya River. Along the riverbanks and from bridges teenagers and children can be seen cooling off in the slow-moving water. A fast ride on one of the boats which provide transportation along the river is a great, refreshing way to see the city; high quality restaurants and cafes line the riverbanks in the center. In addition, most of the finest hotels overlook the river and mountains.
Monuments are few; the best is represented by the medieval citadel, parts of which have been reconstructed, with large round towers. It is located close to the river, along an alley 200 m west of the bridge (behind hotel "Leninobod"). The nearby Museum of Regional Studies displays artifacts discovered during the decades-long excavations here, including artifacts such as weapons, construction materials, household items and farming tools dating to the time of Alexander the Great. An old mosque is also located near the fort. Fans of everything Soviet will enjoy the largest statue of Lenin in Central Asia, on a plaza along the main road across the river from the citadel.
Weather in Khujand is continental, with long, hot and dry summers (to 50C) and short, cold and dry winters (to -25C), similar to other Fergana Valley locations. Rainfall occurs mostly in spring and fall, and snow in the winter is rare.

Fann Mountains, Tajikistan

The Fann Mountains are probably the most beautiful mountain system not only of Tajikistan, but of Central Asia as a whole. It is there where most of our tours are arranged. A variety of routes will allow you to choose from tours for beginners or professionals, and to trek through the blossoming gorges or conquer the rough, snowy peaks.
The popularity of the Fann Mountains is not only about the beauty of its local landscapes, but also about its wonderful climate. The annual precipitation there is 250mm (9.84 in), and the temperature in summer does not rise above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). The best time for hikes and climbs is between July and September.

The Fann Mountains are located in the western part of Tajikistan, and include parts of the Gissar and Zeravshan Ridges. There are nine peaks with a height over 5000 meters (16,404 feet); Chimtarga is the highest at 5489m (18,008 feet). The Fann Mountains are home to the pearl of Tajikistan – Lake Iskanderkul. The famous Seven Lakes are also located there, falling in a cascade down along a large gorge.
The Russian singer Yuriy Vizbor once visited there and later wrote a song, of which a few lines are excerpted here: “I left my heart in the Fann Mountains. Now I walk heartless in the plains.” It’s hard not to agree with him if you’ve ever been to the Fann Mountains.

Iskandarkul, The Lake of Alexander the Great.

This is the largest and perhaps most beautiful lake in the Fan Mountains Tajikistan. It is freely stretched at a height of 2200 m above sea level, surrounded on all sides by huge mountains, which form in some places inaccessible cliffs.
The shape reminds Iskanderkul triangle having an area of three and a half square kilometers and reaches a depth of nearly seventy feet.

Turquoise-blue waters of the precious crystal, effectively contrasted with the almost devoid of vegetation, red-brown rock slopes leading down to the water. The rapid mountain rivers - Saritag, Serima and Hozormech racing the wooded gorges, carry their scorching cold lake water. A narrow strip of bush willow, wild rose, barberry, and buckthorn bordered lake shore.
Water in Iskandarkul cold enough, but near the shore and in summer it is closed bays you can swim. At almost the entire winter Iskanderkul freezes, only the middle of the lake is a narrow strip of clean water, formed by an underwater jet stream.

In the coastal areas inhabited by snow leopards, bears, hoopoes, mountain partridge - partridges, turkeys - ulary. However, he Iskaderkul can not boast an abundance of life, its waters are inhabited only small fish - char.
The lake named after the great military leader and conqueror Alexander The Great who to be said passed the lake on his way to India. Iskander is Persian equivalent for Alexander while kul means lake in many turkic languages.

According to an old legend, 2300 years ago one of the most greatest military leaders and statesman of ancient world – Alexander The Great on his way to India, in 329 AD reached Sogdiana state and conquered its capital Marakandu which was completely ruined. Freedom loving local dwellers did not want to resign and declared a war against Alexander and his army. One night incensed Alexander and his army penetrated to the dwellers area, ruined their homes and killed the people. Still unsatisfied Alexander decided to bury even a memory about rebellious dwellers and required to build a dam across the river to flood the area. Sometimes after the river filled the valley and created a lake but even then the dwellers did not give up and continued to pursue Alexander's army. In order to finish with dwellers Alexander requested to destroy an upper part of the dam and huge mass of water fall down the valley sweeping everything on its way, but even then Alexander didn't reach the target.

Another day dwellers driven by a great motion to revenge, attacked Alexander's army. Alexander galloped around on his warhorse Bucephalus bearing up his warriors but dwellers came closer and closer, so close that Alexander found himself on the edge of the cliff, the horse stumbled and both Alexander and Bucephalus faked down into the lake recently created by Alexander's request.
Alexander survived but the horse sank. In grief Alexander left the area towards India where he called one of the cities founded by him in 326 AD by the name of his warhorse - Bucephalus. This days the city is located on the territory of Pakistan and known as Djalalapur.

Alexander passed away many years ago, but according to local belief, during summer clear nights, exactly at midnight, Bucephalus comes out of lake and graze on the shores, then plays around the water and disappear in lake again. Locals believe if a single girl see Bucephalus, happy marriage and a long life awaits her soon.

If you stare into the waters of the lake here at midnight, you'll see Alexander the Great, resplendent in golden armour, ride forth on the back of his horse, Bucephalus. Or so the locals say. One may be a little sceptical about that, but it should not stop you looking out into the inky blackness just in case.
The sky always flecked with fleecy clouds, the lake an exquisite shade of eau de nil, the silver grey of willow and tamarisk contrasted with the darker green of the mulberry, the westering sun brought out in all their fullness, the different tints - purple, red, green and grey of the mountains.

The lake itself is Iskanderkul's main attraction. The water is an amazingly bright shade of turquoise, and with the snow-capped mountains in the background it looks picturesque from any angle. Iskanderkul was formed by a rockfall, and if you head downstream (east of the lake) you'll see the impressive waterfall 40m high where the water finally overflows the rocks and cascades into the river. The falls are also a local place of pilgrimage: look out for the coloured ribbons tied onto the bushes. Each one denotes a prayer or request.

Around Iskanderkul well hidden in a cave above the village of Mahshevad is a holy shrine containing an ancient mummy, possibly the preserved remains of the Sogdian general Spitamenes. As this is a holy site, visitors are expected to wash themselves before going inside, and must be dressed respectfully. Women should ask before entering.

Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan. Visit this adorable city with Avesto Travel😊

Dushanbe is a clean, European-style city. The city is located in Gisar valley at 2,700 ft above sea level, and has wide tree-lined streets with plenty of cafés to enjoy coffee or tea with local sweets. Dushanbe is the financial, political, administrative, and cultural capital of Tajikistan. All Government offices and Embassies are located in Dushanbe.

Administratively, Dushanbe is divided into four zones, or districts: Shohmansur, Firdawsi, Ismoil Somoni and Sino (Avicenna). It is true that many streets in Dushanbe are named after writers and philosophers. The main points of business and interests are on or close to avenue named after Rudaki – founder of Tajik literature. The Rudaki Avenue runs from the railway station in the south to a bus station in northern part of the city.

Varzob

Only 5-km from the capital is the Varzob mountain resort. A narrow road through small villages will twist you up to Varzob – a delightful place with stunning views of high mountains and the foamy rapid river in the valley.

Hissor
When you arrive in Dushanbe, you will encounter great opportunities to see Hissor Fortress, one of the most precious historical sites of Tajikistan. Comfortably located near Dushanbe (15 km west of Dushanbe), Hissor Fortress combines the traditional elements of power, trade and culture of the ancient Tajik nation. Hissor Fortress is the closest site to Dushanbe; relatively good roads connect the city and fortress so you will not need a high clearance car to drive there. There are several historical sites, which surround Hissar Fortress, such as two madressas (18th and 19th century), a small museum with displays of clothing, ceramics and jewelry.

The World’s Tallest Dam

The 984 ft (300 m) dam is situated on the Vakhsh River, an hour drive southeast of Dushanbe. Founded in 1961, Nurek is the world’s tallest existing dam, which is the main supplier of electricity for the country. Once on top of the dam, there is a spectacular view of the crystal clear water surrounded by red rock hills.
