Thanks to Todd Kolberg for allowing me to observe his Uber L1 course in LA this weekend. I enjoy watching other instructors to see how they present knowledge and skills to eager new students. Always something to learn.

As a bonus, the guy assisting him is someone I have known for a long time, but have not seen for 20 years.

Canyon Guides International is proud to announce the training and certification of 12 new Level 2 canyon guides in Mexico.

In February and March of this year CGI Instructors Rich Carlson and Adolfo Isassi were invited to train and assess a group of canyoneers from a Monterrey canyoning club called Legión Cañonera del Norte. It was obvious from the first day that every member of the group had already been learning and practicing at a level higher than most. It is rare for 100% of a class of candidates to pass and be granted certification, but this group did it.

Congratulations to:

Alan Fernando Muñoz Espinosa
Ana Lilia Cristobal Hernandez
Antonio Sainz Serralde
Arturo Martinez Robles
Edrei Arim Ventura Naranjo
Enrique Israeli Martinez Baez
Erick Castillo de la Garza
Jesús Mario Leal de la Fuente
José Alberto García Córdova
Melissa Yesenia Juárez Treviño
Oswaldo Vitella Guerrero
Pablo César Valero Arellano

We are proud to welcome all of you as members of Canyon Guides International.

Canyon Guides International is proud to announce the release of its "Canyoneering Competencies List". This multipurpose document serves as:

- A course design guide for CGI Instructors
- A study guide for aspiring professional guides
- A study guide for recreational canyoneers and canyon leaders
- A matrix of competencies aligned with course levels
- A course selection guide for newcomers that want to get instruction from certified instructors

A step forward from current skills lists, this Competencies List was created by Rich Carlson, based on his 40+ years of experience canyoneering and 30+ years guiding and teaching, with input from several CGI instructors from the USA and Canada. The result is not only a document that lists canyoning skills and competencies, but offers an instructional framework and philosophy to teach rope work and manage risk.

The document is available in PDF format for download from CGI's website at:

We are honored to include BlueWater Ropes among our sponsors for the CGI Canyon Rendezvous, coming 22-23 October in Monterrey Mexico.

BlueWater was the first US company to create ropes specially made for canyoneering, including the 8mm Canyon Pro, still a favorite of many pro canyon guides. BlueWater has supported the canyoneering community, including sponsoring rendezvous for more than 20 years.

Thanks to Mauricio G Muguerza and Aldea Matacanes for sponsoring our upcoming Canyon Rendezvous.

We know from experience organizing more than 40 rendezvous in the past that people’s expectations vary, so we are offering a range of accommodations for the rendezvous and not including the price in the rendezvous fee. You can stay in a fine hotel, save money staying in a rustic cabin, or save even more by camping.

Aldea Matacanes will serve as the Potrero Redondo activity hub during the rendezvous. It is within hiking distance to several of the most popular canyons in the area.

In today’s Guide Spotlight - FRANCOIS XAVIER (FX) GAGNON - CGI Certified Level 3 Pro Canyon Guide. Also serving as the current CGI Regional Director for Canada.

Since 1999, FX has been an international adventure guide specialized in backcountry skiing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, and canyoning.

His love for sharing the outdoors with others moved him to North Vancouver, in the North Shore Mountains, where he started West Coast Educational Adventures & West Coast Canyoning Adventures Ltd.

Being in the snow, in the water on the rocks is what fills FX and inspires him to empower others. In that way you will find he doesn’t just “show up” to the day, he brings a passion that helps you transcend your fears and barriers.

“Mentor-neering”

“A true guide is able to bring others to a higher level of self-awareness, help them achieve higher goals and surpass their limits, create a deeper connection with nature and others while maintaining amazing, memorable adventures without compromising safety. This is where the term “‘mentor-neering’ comes from.” -FX Gagnon

FX’s experience spans two decades and includes search and rescue. He knows as well as anyone the risks and the importance of risk management. For that reason, high standards of safety are achieved through thorough planning and adhering to industry best practices.

As the sport grows in North America, FX remains the only certified Canyoning Adventures Operator on the West Coast of Canada and is setting the standards as high as possible so those that follow will also promote safety awareness and environmental stewardship.
His goal is to establish West Coast Education Adventures as a new benchmark for outdoor education, promoting experiential learning by keeping its students actively engaged in an appropriately challenged and mindful experience.

Whether hanging rope-taught below a waterfall, practicing first aid, avalanche safety, or just figuring out how to roll your kayak, FX will be there every step of the way to ensure the best learning experience on your path to sustainable and independent adventure.

In today’s Guide Spotlight – ADOLFO ISASSI – CGI Certified Level 3 Pro Canyon Guide. Also serving as the current Technical Director for CGI. Adolfo resides in Huricane, Utah.

Canyoneering has been a big part of my life for the last eight years.

I started my canyoneering specific training under the mentorship of Rich Carlson and the American Canyoneering Association leadership assessment program where I attained a Leader 2 certification, and later moved to work on my Professional Guide Certification under Rick Green. I have complimented my canyoneering training with a Swiftwater Rescue Certification from Sierra Rescue 3 International and Wilderness First Aid certification.

In 2017 I was invited to be part of the American Canyoneering Association organization as Chairman of The Board to help the organization doubling efforts on its mission of “Canyoneering Safety Through Training and Education”.

In 2018, I started to get professional work as Guide Assistant for Excursions of Escalante in Utah and participated in national and international TV projects guiding and rigging for TV crews filming promotional videos and adventure episodes for TV series.
In 2019 I started guiding professionally for Excursions of Escalante in central Utah area, and Epic One Adventures in the southern Utah area.
