Hot weather safety tips.

Hot weather safety tips.

We are experiencing hotter than normal temperatures here in the Smokies and we want to make sure everyone stays safe while enjoying the park!

Here are some tips to beat the heat:
1. Stay Hydrated: Bring a minimum of 1 liter of water with you, no matter how short the hike may seem
2. Hike Early or Late: Avoid the peak heat of the day by hiking early in the morning or later in the afternoon (but don't forget your headlamp!)
3. Know Your Limits: Heat can affect your stamina and judgment. If you start to feel dizzy, nauseous, or unusually fatigued, take a break in the shade and sip water.
4. Keep an Eye on Weather Reports: Stay informed about the latest weather conditions and heat advisories.
5. Look out for Each Other: Hike with a buddy and keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke in your group. If anyone starts to show signs of heat stroke, immediately start cooling them down and call 911 via cell phone or satellite emergency notification device. Remember cell coverage is very limited in the park!

You can help protect iconic springtime flowers and the biodiversity they support by practicing leave no trace ethics when visiting public lands. Remember to leave what you find and take only memories.
