On a sunny day in June it is wonderful to discover all the natural and artistic beauties of the Peligna Valley, with the ethereal atmosphere of the Concattedrale of San Pelino in Corfinio, the place where the name "Italia" was pronounced for the first time and with the majesty of the Badia Morronese complex in Sulmona.
Here in Santo Spirito a Majella you can still feel the breath of that wind of those mountains that inspired the great soul of Pietro dal Morrone, known to history as Celestine V.
Abruzzo is an astonishing discovery of wonders.

Atri

Atri boasts an ancient and captivating history. Known as the “queen of the hills” because of its artistic heritage and richness in interesting monuments, this magnificent art town preserves much more than meets the eye, besides all that can be observed in the daylight. Walking down the historical centre, it is possible to discover what lies “under the surface”, a fascinating path beneath the streets, made of ancient cisterns and impressive grottos, a true discovery experience. This timeless atmosphere preserves “tales from the underground” that deal with water. Water echoes even in the name of the town – Atri, recalling the Adriatic sea. Water that flows underneath, shaping a town in its underground; or rain water the ancient inhabitants of this territory managed to gather and store for the town water-supply, by creating a complex underground rain-water drainage system. Imposing ancient cisterns dating back to the Roman Empire were built in the basement of Palazzo Duchi d’Acquaviva, the first stop of this suggestive journey. Fragments of opus signinum are still visible in the walls, an ancient building technique used for its waterproofing effect. Reaching the cloister in the breathtaking Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, descending into the crypt visitors can admire another Roman cistern, whose walls where enriched with medieval frescoes, since this construction had lost its previous function of water storage, becoming a place of worship. In the area called “fuori li muri” (outside the ancient town defensive walls) “ le Grotte” are worth a visit, a peculiar natural environment made of grottoes and caves of ancient origins, probably also a water reserve in the past, as well as used for other functions. A way made of stories and anecdotes, in a combination of “lights and shadows”.

Considered as the “mother mountain”, the Maiella had always given many precious gifts to the inhabitants of its territory. One of them is precisely the 𝑀𝑎𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑒. It is the natural material that builds the massif itself up, mostly made of limestone and biological sedimentary rocks, very malleable and easy to be carved, but at the same time very resistant. Since very early times and then during the centuries, people living in this territory had been learning how to extract the stone in blocks from the quarries of the mountain,in order to transport them to the centre of the village and work them in the Stonemasons’ workshops and botteghe. A whole community had been bound to the stonemasonry activity, this is the reason why 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 “𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑠”, where this traditional craftsmanship has created unique cultural heritage and is still preserved and alive today.

Last week- on an 𝑨𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓 with our guests from Virginia 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐑. 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐞 and 𝐉𝐞𝐟𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐞. Josephine's ancestors were from 𝑩𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊 (Di Giacomo family).
It was a very emotional moment: finding records about her family at the town hall, then visiting the places where her grand grand parents lived and the historical centre of Bisenti.
During their stay in Abruzzo, our American friends also visited 𝐴𝑡𝑟𝑖, 𝑆𝑖𝑙𝑣𝑖 𝑃𝑎𝑒𝑠𝑒 and the 𝐶𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑜 𝑇𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟.
A lovely experiece!
