Meet Martin and Charlotte from Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland. I’m highlighting the vendors I use on all of my adventure travel pursuits on Reddit and here for additional exposure to small business owners in Greenland! Martin and Charlotte are members of two big families in Ittoqqortoormiit, a tiny town of 350 people in northeast Greenland.

Martin is a full time hunter and cofounder of Tsigaar Naasor, with Charlotte. They do accommodation and tours along with her sister’s company Nanu Travel. I use both while I’m in town

Martin was illiterate at one point because he was taught to hunt and learn from the land. There are lovely articles about him being one of the last hunters in Ittoqqortoormiit and documentaries.

They’re both kind and Charlotte is very accomplished and speaks great English. Together they have 3 kids.

Because of Martin’s status as a full time hunter, he is an expert musher and won races in Ilulissat last year. He is often studied by scientists and goes out with them to help identify wildlife migration patterns. He knows wilderness medicine. Fully trained as a guide that will keep you safe even with a polar bear nearby because he has been given the license to harvest some every hunting season.

Martin is about 10 years younger than me at 29. He is one of the youngest full time hunters that has completed his training by his elder mentor Ejlmer

It is a very rough life as a full time hunter. You can’t economically benefit from subsistence so they’re doing tourism to support their financial goals for their kids to not be forced to become hunters unless they want to. I support them wholeheartedly.

What an amazing town in Northeast Greenland. My heart resides there: Ittoqqortoormiit. I took this in 2022 when I had the honor of spending two months in this tiny town of 350 people in the largest fjord system on earth. Scoresbysund is calling my name when I see this large iceberg was stuck in the sea ice. She was named Lulu who stayed with us and served as a great navigation tool. Lulu was the subject of many photos and drone work. The first iceberg I have ever walked on and touched. I’ve never been the same since that trip. I was deeply moved and I knew I had to make Greenland part of my career from that point forward.

I will be a fixer for YouTube channels here next year and taking some adventurous travelers here as well. It’s not for the faint of heart since it is a subsistence living culture in polar bear country but the views are spectacular. You can even see bits of a mirage in this image.

It is not that complicated to access on Norlandair via Iceland RKV domestic airport followed by a helicopter on Air Greenland and then a snowmobile or ATV to the guest house. Piece of cake. Totally worth it though especially when you experience the way of life, the nature, and the intimate relationship between humans, wildlife, land, sea, and ice but especially sea ice. The sea ice is what’s disappearing at alarming levels and destabilizes every facet of life here.

Experiencing this in person gives you a visceral reaction to what is happening here and in other at risk communities all over. It makes climate change much more personal. That’s what we are about at Icebergchick Adventures. I help clients that are solo or group travelers looking for something different and unique or fixing for creators and video production teams with on the ground logistics in every corner of the country. We can do just about anything provided it’s possible, legal, and ethical. We only use local vendors and operators that live and work in the community. They’re all Greenland owned businesses because responsible tourism is vital for the future of Greenland. Visit Greenland with us in 2025!

Big splurge but aurora viewing cabins at the last minute coupled with understanding the aurora forecasting data from NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center can produce magical results. We have them in Greenland thanks to Qeqertarsuaq Tours and Hotel Arctic. I took this image many years ago at Borealis Basecamp in late February in Chatanika, Alaska. Exciting times to be visiting the Arctic. Best viewing time is late September until late March in northern Greenland but the popular season is probably February until first week of April for Aurora viewing specifically. My favorite spots are Uummannaq, Qeqertarsuaq, Ilulissat, Tasiilaq and Ittoqqortoormiit.

The ice is great in other regions of the Arctic as well. This is in Iceland and you can see people for scale. We often have to do stopovers in Iceland or transit there to flights going to certain parts of Greenland like Ittoqqortoormiit.

Trippy but real. Life on the edge of the world’s largest fjord system has some visual perks. More samples of the Fata Morgana mirage I saw in Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland back in April 2022. Looking forward to taking folks here in 2025.

There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes according to my friends in Greenland. “Bad”weather and dark skies make for some of the best and dramatic photography of nature’s sculptures: icebergs. Some of my favorites from March 2023 are shown here. I go to Greenland at least once a year and photograph icebergs and indigenous life. I now do speaking engagements on cruise ships to the Arctic as a Greenland expert.

Icebergs speak in Greenland. The obvious connection is climate change and the warming planet that many folks are vocal on social media and passionate so I don’t need to reiterate it. I don’t share that passion. My passion is for the people living with the climate change right now and protecting their traditions and life ways. What affects them today will affect us tomorrow. I’m working on projects to deepen the bonds between Arctic Indigenous Peoples that are presently separated by colonial borders.

More to come but I hope some of you can appreciate the raw beauty of the ice at the end of the world. It never gets old even after over a dozen trips to the Ilulissat Icefiord and counting.

Weird outtake of my hunter/guide adjusting something in a snowmobile while searching for northern lights in Scoresbysund, Greenland in 2022. Sometimes the picture about the outing are more interesting than the Aurora photos!
