Belgian waffles made their first North American appearance at the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle; however, it was the 1964-65 World’s Fair in Queens, NY that skyrocketed their popularity throughout North America. Belgium native, Maurice Vermersch and his family served the waffles in their traditional form (plain) or with a light dollop of whipped cream and a few freshly sliced strawberries. They changed the name from Brussels waffles to Belgian waffles because they knew “Belgian” would help their popularity, but they were still adamant about the waffles being eaten properly –with your hands.

Contrary to its name, the White Russian doesn’t hail from Russia. Instead, the cocktail, dating back to 1949, was invented in Belgium when Gustav Tops, a Belgian bartender, created the cocktail alongside its sister cocktail, the black Russian, at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. The drink names references the main ingredient in both cocktails, vodka.

The Grand Canyon encompasses just over one million acres and measures 277 miles long. From Grand Canyon Village, the drop measures a vertical mile, or approximately 5,000 feet, from Rim to River. Putting that in practical terms, if you hike the canyon or go down by mule, it takes two days, and if you hike from the South to North Rim, the trek is three days one way. But, for a real adventure, raft through the Canyon on a trip that can take up to two weeks!

According to neworleans.com, Creole apothecary, Antoine Peychaud invented the Sazerac in his shop on Royal St. in 1838. He first served it to his fellow Masons after hours in an egg cup — a coquetier — a word that is said to have morphed into “cocktail.” The name of the drink came from Peychaud’s favorite French brandy, Sazerac-de-Forge et fils. At some point later on, American rye whiskey was substituted for the cognac and, in 1873, bartender Leon Lamothe added a dash of Absinthe. But, due to the outlaw of Absinthe, Peychaud’s special bitters was soon substituted in its place.

Time for another travel inspired Foodie Friday cocktail in honor of the recent Kentucky Derby!

It may come as a surprise, but the unofficial drink of the South – the Mint Julep – got its start as a medicinal concoction used to settle the stomach. It gained popularity in the American South in the late 1700s due to its elite nature. The Mint Julep was (and still is) served with crushed ice and in a silver or pewter cup, and back then, not everyone had access to those two items. As time went on, the cocktail’s popularity never died, and the Mint Julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938 where nearly 120,000 Mint Juleps have been sold every year since.
