It was a very Margaux kind of evening ….

Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux 2000 (amazing color and kept getting better in the glass)
Chateau Prieuré Lichine 2010 (⭐️ outstanding! ⭐️)
Chateau Desmirail 2003 (so deliciously earthy and mushroomy)
Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 1989 (still rich and lush after 35 years!)

Let’s do it again soon 😉 🍷 😋

Wine dinner lineup!!

⭐️ Heitz-Lochardet Meursault 1er cru Perrières 2018
⭐️ Château German Marbuzet St. Estephe 2009
⭐️ Château de La Grille Chinon 2014
⭐️ La Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2016

An assortment of varieties for our tasting dinner: Pinot Noir, Cab Franc and a Cab Sauvignon/Merlot/CF blend, but all went beautifully with our dinner, and all showed plenty of depth and complexity.

Cheers!!

High tide on the estuary, a good time to go fishing 🎣
The fishing huts that line the banks of the Gironde Estuary are called “carrelets” because the nets they use for fishing are square (carré).

So we did a fun and very interesting thing: at the Chateau de Montaigne (home of the famous French Renaissance writer and philosopher Michel de Montaigne), we participated in a conference and banquet around the theme of Renaissance gastronomy. All the dishes in the tasting menu were what people would have been eating in the mid-1500’s (no potatoes! No tomatoes! They hadn’t caught on yet, only introduced in Europe in the middle of the century). Scroll through for the menu, created and carried out by the amazing of La Nef des Gastronomes… and pictures of the Tower, where Montaigne wrote some of his famous Essays.

Going away from Bordeaux for an evening (well, mostly… we did finish with a lovely 2020 Chateau Laribotte Sauternes..).
We began our Burgundy adventure with a 2017 white Hospices de Beaune Meursault-Porusots from Édouard Delaunay, with rich floral notes and a touch of vanilla; then on to the reds with a very expressive Hospices de Nuits Les Porrets-Saint-Georges cuvée Antide Midon (but I mean honestly, these names are sometimes soooo long! 😂) and a 2015 Chambolle-Musigny from Domaine Amiot Servelle, with delicacy and yet a deep aromatic intensity.
These are definitely “wow” wines 🍷🍷
Cheers! ❤️❤️

The first vine flowers have finally appeared!! 🥳
These were at Château Margaux last Thursday.
They’re a bit on the late side with the rainy cool spring we’ve been having, so hoping for a nice warm sunny summer so they’ll catch up. ☀️

A day in the Sauternes region, one of Bordeaux’s less famous areas, but well worth exploring ! Here we are at Chateau Rayne-Vigneau, a Premier Grand Cru Classé 1855 estate, tasting their dry white, their “lighter” Sauternes, and the star of the show, the Chateau Rayne Vigneau Sauternes, full of bright papaya, honey and mango flavors balanced by a refreshing acidity.
The vines are just about to burst into flower, a bit late due to the unseasonably cool and wet spring. Some of the vines here are very old, look how gnarled and twisted they are, so gorgeous. (and on a windy day, one’s hair tends to look really puffy 😆 😆)
Cheers!

This has nothing to do with wine 🍷 , gastronomy 🥘 or tourism 🗺️ experiences, or the beauty of Bordeaux. But it’s so stinkin’ adorable, I had to post it. It’s a photo of my son when he was about two years old, and our friends’ daughter. SOOO CUTE 🥰

Just a little nod to a recent dinner where our hosts served two delicious wines from opposite ends of the price spectrum, from two of my favorite vintages 😍
Château Cos d’Estournel (St. Estèphe) needs no introduction, this 2nd Grand Cru Classé really delivers 🤩, dense and lush with beautiful complexity, and 2016 is overall one of the best recent vintages in Bordeaux.
Chateau Côte de Baleau (Saint Emilion Grand Cru) 2011 was a lovely surprise; deep, balanced and elegant, ripe textured fruit and a long finish. Proof that, while a luxury wine like Cos is a fabulous treat, there are many excellent affordable wines in Bordeaux!
2011 has often been a bit “forgotten”, arriving as it did after the star vintages of ‘09 and ‘10, but it has developed beautifully and is a real pleasure to drink - and now is the moment!🍷 ❤️
Cheers! And happy Labour Day/May 1st to you all! 🌼

The famous Queue de la Baleine (Whale’s Tail) is back for the 2024 season!
The tradition continues, and this year’s version highlights the Olympic Games coming to France 🇫🇷
The sculpture is the work of a Belgian artist named Emanuel Janssen Casteels; it was first put in place in the waters of the Bay of Arcachon in front of the main pier of the town of Arcachon in 2011. Every year in November it is pulled out of the water and repainted and reappears in April, heralding the onset of spring and the return of lovely weather. We’ve had a rather gray and wet winter, so spring weather can’t come soon enough!! ☀️☀️

Some of you may already know about 🎨 Arnaud’s latest project, gorgeous Bordeaux-inspired wallpaper manufactured to order by well-known Paris design house Isidore Leroy (making high-end wall coverings since 1842!) Here are a couple of photos taken during the “vernissage” (evening of presentation to the public), and a few detail shots. It’s very much in the style of the classic Toile de Jouy and other printed fabrics of the 18thC. Comes in gray, slate blue, and lightly tinted red/green/blue. We loooooove it! ❤️

What better way to spend a drizzly 🌧️ cloudy afternoon in Saint Emilion than to duck into a great wine bar with a friend and taste a bit of rosé from sunny Provence ☀️
Thank you
Before you ask : we only had a small glass from this enormous bottle, somebody else drank all the rest!! 😂
