I witnessed a su***de this morning, and I’m trying to make sense out of what I saw. In case I have alarmed you, let me first say I’m talking about a toad. Toad su***de. 😉 But read on.

I put some boxes on my pile of scrappy wood and set it on fire. After a few minutes, I noticed a little toad hopping around the edge of the fire. Certain that the toad would hop away from the fire and find somewhere else to live, I tended to some things and returned to see it still there, getting dangerously close to the flames. I had a rake in my hand and used it to carefully rake the toad away from the fire, but the thing just scrambled back to the burning pile. I raked it back again, and the toad hopped right back to the fire, only this time it ran right into the flames!! I stood in disbelief and cried out, “Nooo! Whaaat? Why? What the bleepity - bleep??” I peered into the flames and saw it, a charred little lifeless toad-chip.

A normal person may have just gone about their day at this point, but since I like to find meaning in everything, I watched the flames and slowly realized that the toad’s fear of me and my rake probably caused it to run back to its burn pile home and die. Stay with me.

It’s not unlike what we humans do so often in life. Sometimes opportunities and/or need for change are right in our face, but we refuse to really see it. Or we acknowledge it, but fear keeps us locked into a mindset that sticking with what we know is the best thing for us. Even if that world, that relationship, that job, that whatever - is literally harming us, we dig in and make ourselves believe we can’t venture into something new. So, we stay in a place that no longer serves us. We no longer grow. We stagnate. Or burn. Or die.

The little toad’s sacrifice is a message to pay attention to our circumstances and surroundings and be honest with ourselves about what needs to change so we can grow and be happy. We can’t let fear of change hold us back. Just beyond me and my rake were several acres of beautiful toad habitat and the fearful ‘lil toad could have lived happily ever after. Instead, it ran back to what it knew and suffered a horrible end.

On another note, what goes best with toad chips? Ranch? Salsa?
