For those interested in the history and origins of Kung Fu this might be an interesting article. Written by Master Ang Lian Huat, founder of Nam Yang, it is a ‘short history of Shaolin’. Whilst it differs from the popular versions expounded by historians today it is a fascinating insight into how the Kung Fu Masters of old saw themselves and their place in the ever evolving history of this fascinating martial art. I have added some notes after the article to explain its context and significance.

My writings on Sum Chien. Took a while to format them for our new blog but they are finally ready and available to read. I do recommend that anyone seriously interested in our kung fu art take the time to read this. The Five Tiger Society performing a kung fu demonstration approx 1920. What a great historical video! Contrary to what some modern authors are suggesting, both the techniques and the weapons being used are very similar to what we are used to seeing today. This must have been filmed just after Sun Yat Sen's overthrow of the Ching Dynasty in a time when China was in great turmoil and conflict was rife. These were the weapons of war and their practitioners might well expect to use them on the battle field. Hence their high skill level and preference for weapon use over unarmed techniques.

Early morning mist blows across a Buddha image as we practice our chi kung on Kiew Lom mountain. We all have the power to choose our path in life. Mine led here. The chains that hold us back exist only in our minds and to break free of then requires only that we see the true nature of our mind and win the battle that is constantly raging in there. That is the important one. All the others are just steps along the way.

You don't have to be big to do kung fu.
Have confidence in your art and in your self.
Do NOT go to the ground.

This is a really interesting video showing demonstrations in a Chinese market place in 1910. A Shuang Tao (double knife) demonstration is included as well as what would now be considered a yoga demonstration. The first is interesting and does show that not all of the old kung fu people were super good. The latter shows that what we tend to think of as an Indian practise was actually present in China as well.

Today is Grand Master Tan's 74th birthday. He has been training since the age of 8 so that now gives him 66 years in our Kung Fu. That is a lot of experience. :) He took over as head of Nam Yang Pugilistic Association in 1984 after the passing of his teacher, Great Grand Master Ang Lian Huat and has dedicated himself very much to continuing our tradition. I have trained with him since 1987 and followed him on many travels around the world to visit teachers, schools, competitions, demonstrations and events. His knowledge and charisma never cease to amaze and he is always a great inspiration to new generations of students. Happy birthday Grand Master Tan!

The word 'Zen' comes from the Indian word 'dhyana'. Bodhidharma introduced this word dhyana into China. The word dhyana became jhan, and then in China ch’an, and then the word traveled to Japan and became Zen. Dhyana means no-mind. Consider Bodhidharma's teaching: 'If you use your mind to study reality, you won’t understand either your mind or reality. If you study reality without using your mind, you’ll understand both.' Zen is the state of no mind. Interestingly the word 'yoga' means 'cessation of the mind'. Do you spot any similarity? :)

Just leaving now for Penang, Malaysia, where I will meet up with my teacher, Grand Master Tan Soh Tin and some of my Singaporean kung fu brothers. We will be performing at Master Ooi Kim Hooi's North South Shaolin Association's Anniversary demonstration. We used to perform a couple of times a year at these events but it is about 12 years now since I went to one. Looking forwards to it and big respect to Master Ooi for organising it. :)

Very interesting energy (chi) today! The full moon coincides with mid summer's day. Something which is not due to happen again for another 70 years or so. And it comes during the rainy season here when energy is always very calm and deep. Today has proved to be a great one for meditation and we will be continuing at midnight when we are going to do a training session under the huge white Buddha statue on the mountain overlooking Pai. Also a great day for prayers - which happen to be my next job! :) I suggest that everyone makes the most of this chance. Obviously I am hoping to make the most of the next time this happens - no harm in being optimistic!
