Travel Fee for Bali 💸

According to officials, starting from next year, the local government in Bali plans to implement a Rp 150,000 ($10) tax on tourists arriving at the renowned 'Island of Gods' to safeguard its cultural heritage 🌴

Bali, a popular destination dependent on tourism, attracts millions of foreign visitors annually, and this initiative aims to leverage its popularity to enhance its financial resources and preserve its tropical charm. Governor I Wayan Koster stated that this fee will be applicable only once during a foreign tourist's visit to Bali.

Let's see if this tax is actually introduced in the end. What do you think of this tax?

The best way to get around Bali - the scooter 🛵

If you visit Bali and expect empty streets, you are unfortunately wrong. Especially in the popular areas Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu and Ubud are very busy. If you want to be flexible and relatively fast on the road, a scooter is the best option. But don't overestimate yourself and always wear a helmet 🪖

Almost everywhere you will find various stores that will rent you a scooter. You just have to tell them what kind of scooter you want and for how long. You usually don't have to give your (international) driver's license or passport. You pay the agreed amount and you are ready to go. You can get gas for the scooter at every corner. Either at a normal gas station or from old alcohol bottles at the roadside. The price per liter is about 1 USD or 15.000 IDR ⛽

Have you ever ridden a scooter? 🛵

Rain in paradise? No problem! ☔️🌴 Here are a few tips to make the most of rainy days:

🌂 A raincoat is an absolute must-have during the rainy days. Balinese people wear them constantly, and you can find them in many shops. Keep your raincoat stored in your scooter or backpack, so you're perfectly equipped for every rain shower!

🦟 Protect yourself from mosquitoes! More rain often means more mosquitoes. You can find mosquito spray even in small shops. One option is Soffell, an affordable lotion that protects your entire body.

💆‍♀️ A day at the spa is perfect for a rainy day in Bali. Bad weather provides the ideal opportunity to relax. Treat yourself to indulgent massages, facials, and manicures at affordable prices.

🕺 Be flexible! Don't plan your days too tightly, leave room for spontaneous decisions. Enjoy the beach when the sun shines, and explore other activities when it rains.

Don't let the rain stop you from collecting unforgettable experiences! 🌴

The most useful apps in Bali 📱

In Bali, there are many apps that can make your life easier. Whether it's about transportation, ordering food or sending items, the apps Grab and Gojek will help you. With these apps, you can order a scooter taxi or a car taxi for a reasonable price 🚕 You can also conveniently order food to your home or recharge your cell phone and electricity. Do you want to look for an accommodation? We can recommend booking.com, AirBnb and Agoda 🏘️ There is a huge selection of accommodations according to your wishes. If possible, it is worth contacting the accommodation directly. This way you can sometimes get a better price.

What you should avoid - VISA OVERSTAY

In Bali / Indonesia everybody needs a visa, which can be for example a Visa on Arrival or a B211A visa.

💡If you want more information about the different visa types, you can find the link to our website in our BIO.

All these visa types allow you to stay a certain number of days in Indonesia. You should not exceed this duration, otherwise you have to pay high fines. The fines are calculated per day, which means that the longer you overstay your visa, the more you have to pay. The price per day is 1.000.000 IDR (65 USD).

If you notice that your visa is about to expire, contact us immediately and we will try to find a solution 🙏

Change money in Bali 💰

Generally there are some possibilities how and where you can change your currency into Indonesian Rupiah. You can already change money in your home country or you can go to a exchange office in Bali. However, we do not recommend it, because the exchange fees are often high and you may even be ripped off in exchange offices ✋

We recommend that you change your money in Bali directly at an ATM 🏧 There are ATM's on every corner and also directly in the airport. By withdrawing money at the ATM you save exchange fees and pay only a small fees if your bank charges for international withdrawals. There are also some banks that do not charge any fees at all.

Preparations for Bali - Part 1

A trip to South-East Asia is a bit different then others. A completely different climate, wildlife and culture. That's why there are different things you need to prepare for.

1) Take care of your passport in time. It must be valid for at least 6 months and have free pages for the visa stamps.
2) Save all important documents online. Nobody wants it, but sometimes it happens - you get robbed. For this reason, it is an advantage to have your important documents stored digitally. This will help you when you need to reapply.
3) Have enough credit and debit cards. It's better for you to have more than one credit/debit card, as it's possible that one card will be blocked or won't work. There are free and paid options for this.

Backpack or suitcase?

Should I take a backpack or a suitcase? Especially if you go to Bali / Indonesia for the first time, the decision will probably be even harder 🙈
A suitcase means a little more comfort, because you don't have to carry your luggage on your back. But the streets and pedestrian paths in Bali are often not suitable for suitcases at all. In addition, you often have to walk through the ocean on speedboat trips to the surrounding islands. A backpack is also a beneficial for this.
For this reason we recommend a backpack. You are much more flexible and especially if you change your accommodation often during your time in Bali, it is much more practical with a backpack.

How do you prefer to travel? Backpack or suitcase? 🧳

Nyepi - the Day of Silence 🤫

Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar (in 2023, it falls on March 22). It is a Balinese celebration mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Nyepi, a public holiday in Indonesia, is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese. The main restrictions are no lighting, no working, no entertainment or pleasure, no traveling and for some no talking or eating at all. The effect of these prohibitions is that Bali's usually bustling streets and roads are empty, there is little or no noise from TVs and radios, limited access to Internet and few signs of activity are seen even inside homes. The only people to be seen outdoors are the pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed.

____

The day following Nyepi is also celebrated as New Year's Day. On this day, the youth of Bali in the village of Sesetan in South Bali practice the ceremony of Omed-omedan or 'The Kissing Ritual' to celebrate the new year.
