Have we told you how much we love to see our member businesses partnering together?!?

Copperhill Brewery took over the taps at RiverSide Spirits last weekend - how cool?! AND did you know both businesses are female owned?? In fact, to the best of our knowledge, Copperhill Brewery is Southeast Tennessee’s ONLY female-owned brewery!

06/07/2023

Stand on the corner in historic downtown Copperhill and you can stand in two states at the same time! It's a MUST-DO selfie when in Ocoee Country for visitors and locals alike!!

Not only can you stand in two states at the same time, stop by Copperhill Brewery and share a beer with a friend, while one sits in Georgia and one in Tennessee! Just how cool is that?!?!

Wednesdays are for Water - Hiwassee River

The year was 1867 when John Muir traveled through the mountains of southeast Tennessee and into western North Carolina. He crossed through 'Track Gap' (named for the volume of tracks left by wildlife, horses, and human travelers) and now known as Track Rock Gap State Archaeological Area, on his way to the “most dangerous” Hiwasee River, which he found to be an impressive mountain river punctuated by rough cascades and upturned rock strata. The Hiwassee led Muir to proclaim that such mountain streams are “interestingly sculptured, far more than the grandest architectural works of man. The finest of the forests are usually found along their banks, and in the multitude of falls and rapids the wilderness finds a voice. Such a river is the Hiwassee, with its surface broken to a thousand sparkling gems, and its forest walls vine-draped and flowery as Eden. And how fine the song it sings!"

Now 156 years later, those very words still ring true. His path is now referred to as the John Muir Trail, a 20.7 mile trail along the north side of Hiwassee River in the Cherokee National Forest. It was 1972 when the trail was constructed through the efforts of the Youth Conservation Corps and the Senior Community Service Employment Program. It's said to follow the path taken during Muir's travels from Kentucky to Florida, documented in his book A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf.

You can follow Muir's footsteps beginning at Childer's Creek in Reliance - come on and spend some time with nature!

3,022 feet in elevation, Oswald Dome, or Bean Mountain as some call it, is a mountain ridge along the western edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is part of the Cherokee National Forest While it's easily visible, and beautiful, seen from the car as one drives along Hwy. 411 through northern Polk County, it should be hiked to truly appreciate its majesty!

Off of Hwy. 30, the Oswald Dome Trail ascends from the Quinn Springs Recreation Area, gaining about 2,220 feet in elevation in just under four miles. The eight miles roundtrip would be fine for the experienced hiker, an easier hike would be to do it one way with a car parked at the end.

Views are best when there's not as much foliage on the trees, so be warned of that if hiking in the spring and summer. There is a cleared area at one of the swichtbacks providing a year-round panoramic view to the west.

The Oswald Dome Trail's claim to fame is its wildflowers. In season, there are as many as 74 different species of blooming plants!

Whenever, and how ever, you may choose to view Oswald Dome, one thing is certain, it is a breathtaking sight to behold, and one you're not going to want to miss.

Wednesdays are for Water - Hiwassee River

Starting this weekend, Saturday, April 1, see the magnificent Hiwassee River from a different perspective by riding the Hiwassee River Scenic Railroad's Copperhill Special or historic Hiwassee Loop excursion train!

Both trips wind through the lower Hiwassee River Gorge before corkscrewing up the mountain near Farner. This unique loop is one of only six in North American and the only one east of the Mississippi River! The longer Copperhill Special continues through Turtletown and Ducktown into the heart of the historic Copper Basin. Passengers will enjoy a layover there to shop and dine and wonder through the quaint downtown area before boarding for the return.

It's time to book those trips for the summer! First class and Dome seats are already sold out for this weekend, so pick your dates and make those reservations to take in the Hiwassee River from a a whole new look!

Editing for details of location...
This Page is for Wildlife and Wildlife Rescue based in Northern Ireland!!
The regulations apply to this country and the NI Wildlife Order..

I'm not sure why so many folks from America are seeing this particular post.. You are very welcome ofcourse.. just bear in mind we have different protections and laws regarding our Wildlife than other countries.. :D just to prevent any confusion...

It's one of those days where you want to get out and do some gardening and tidying up....

Here's a few tips when working around vegetation etc.. to avoid disturbing any nesting birds...

And YES... THEY ARE ALREADY NESTING!!

Spring seems, from all the signs seen so far, to be about 4 or 5 weeks earlier than usual..

I seen our friends down in Kildare Wildlife Rescue had some baby finches brought in a few weeks back.. and they were already a good size!!!
Nutts how early they were..

So don't get complacent thinking it's too early for there to be a nest, eggs or even chicks.. all the stuff we were taught in books and at school about the seasons is jumbled now thanks to climate change... birds respond to the visible weather conditions and act accordingly..

Always be vigilant when doing any clearing, pruning or removing rogue branches from trees etc..

Remember birds deliberately design their nests to be camouflaged into whatever vegetation they are in to keep it safe from predators..

Robins, blackbirds, dunnock and even wrens will happily use an open garage, garden shed with access or an open greenhouse.. a broken pain will allow them in even if the door is closed.. so if your doing a spring clean, watch for a nest on a shelf or behind the flowerpots!!

Collared doves and woodpigeons nest all year round also.. so should be checked for at all times. The nest is a simple saucer sized thin disk of twigs, so hard to see.. extra vigilance for thee guys...

All bird nests are protected under the Wildlife act.. you cannot touch them, disturb them, remove then or even take a photo!!!

And you MUST NOT EVER move a birds nest to the branch next door if its in your way.. birds will pinpoint their nest down to the mm.. if it isn't where they built it there's every chance they will not find the relocated one and the eggs and chicks will die..

They are only there for a few weeks.. work around them, leave them alone.. and be proud they thought your garden is so nice and safe they chose to love there and take pleasure in watching the chicks learn how to fly and grow... they're your babies too. 😀

And remember, when you come to raft, there's plenty more to experience in Ocoee Country so plan on staying a few days - take a chartered fishing trip on the Hiwassee, enjoy the historic Hiwassee Loop or Copperhill Special excursion trains, check out some of the over 200 miles of hiking trails, spend the day shopping in historic Copperhill and enjoy a local craft beer as the sun goes down! Wednesdays are for Water - Parksville Lake Delta

It's the iconic Parksville Delta with a cotton-candy sunrise coming over the horizon. We can tell you how the Delta came to be at the mouth of the Ocoee River, but what we can't tell you is the recipe for the incredible skies seen over Parksville!

The delta area, or flats as some call it, dates back to when the Parksville reservoir area was being created in 1910-1911. These sediment deposits, which originated upstream in the Toccoa/Ocoee watershed as a result of soil erosion in the Copper Basin, settled in the mouth of Parksville Lake.

Parksville Lake itself is the oldest man-made lake found in the Cherokee National Forest, It's creation was part of the Ocoee Dam #1 project of Tennessee Power Company. The project was completed in 1913 and acquired by Tennessee Valley Authority in 1939, who still manages the hydroelectric dam system on the Ocoee River today.

As for those sunrises, well, all we can say about those is we've been blessed with an unmatched beauty in Ocoee Country! Come on and see for yourself!!

Oh, so pretty!!
02/02/2023

Oh, so pretty!!

4,224 feet in elevation stands Big Frog Mountain. Overlooking much of Ocoee Country, this peak stands as the westernmost land in the Eastern US with an elevation greater than 4,000 feet! In fact, there is no higher point west of Big Frog Mountain until Big Bend in Texas or the Black Hills of South Dakota!!

Combining the area of the Big Frog Wilderness with the Cohutta Wilderness Area in Georgia you have the largest tract of wilderness area on Forest Service lands in all the Eastern US. Designated a Wilderness Area in 1984, Big Frog consists of 8,132 remote acres offering a plethora of mountain vistas, waterfalls, and clear mountain streams.

Over 35 miles of backcountry trails criss-cross the area, the most popular being Big Frog, Licklog Ridge, and Wolf Ridge trails. These trails provide wonderful opportunities for backpacking, primitive camping, and some excellent fishing. Each also leads to the summit of Big Frog Mountain for some of the most spectacular views anywhere.

No time like the present to pay us a visit - what are you waiting for?!?!
