Eleven months ago, we were struck by lightning… the last piece of the puzzle was finally just installed, a new engine. And we had a successful sea trial! Looking forward to being able to move again!

So after five months *to the day* of being out of the water (and homeless), Make It A Double is scheduled to be splashed tomorrow morning. 🤞🤞🤞The mast is back up and the sails should go back on in a couple of days. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of electrical repairs left, but we should be able to move back aboard!

Special thanks to so many people who helped and housed us during this time and so many other offers to help too!

Unfortunately we are still out of the water with repairs. Going on four months off the boat now. We’ve been blessed with family and friends who have let us stay with them while we are home/boatless.

Making the most of our time as we can with visits to our daughter in DC and friends in AZ. Lemons => lemonade with a splash of vodka!

Just realized that we haven’t posted anything here in a while and quite a lot (or a little, depending on perspective) has happened.

So, a thing happened... our boat was struck by lightning early Saturday morning (July 16, 2022). It was a direct hit to the top of the mast and this is what’s left of the wind speed indicator that was up there.

We are ok but it took out both the 110v and 12v sides of our onboard power, all our navigation electronics, and even the ECUs on both diesel engines. We made it to a marina and have 110 extension cords for our refrigerator and some other electric stuff so we can cook. But no oven and no AC 😔

We’re working with insurance to assess the extent of the damage. Hopefully it won't be too bad but definitely changes our plans for who knows how long. So, if you’re in the Beaufort area, let us know!

Gnarly ride coming into Beaufort inlet yesterday. After 36 hours of very light (motor-sailing) wind and seas from Charleston, this is the most turbulent we had!

Happy to be here! Made it to Beaufort from Charleston in 36 hours.

Still enjoying our anchorage in Charleston, SC, by the Yorktown. Just waiting for our weather window to move north to Beaufort/Morehead, NC. We should be in a good position for fireworks this weekend anyway. Happy Fourth to you all!

Made it to the Charleston inlet Friday (6/10/22) afternoon. We passed a cruise ship that left to make room for us (jk) and happily found our anchorage next to the Yorktown and in front of the Cooper River bridge. And, look, the conch shell made it too!

24/06/2022

The scene under the boat between the hulls. Wish I could use that as our washing machine!

24/06/2022

Somehow our conch shell stayed in the trampoline. The storm and conditions got much worse after this video, with the shell flying straight up! But it survived!

The first day of our passage, June 8 from Lighthouse Point/Pompano, FL to Charleston, SC, was beautiful and perfect for our sail north. But that night, squalls started forming all around us. While we were able to out run most the lightening storms, the wind turned out of the north as one squall got us. I was trying to make (heat up) chicken Marsala for dinner, but we ended up with PB sandwiches.

Apologies for the delay in posting about our passage from Lighthouse Point/Pompano, FL to Charleston, SC. We did arrive safely on Friday, 6/10/22. Unfortunately, I (Elizabeth) became ill that night and, after the weekend of fighting fevers, etc, Rick called the Coast Guard to get me from our boat at anchor to the local hospital. Big SHOUT OUT to the Coast Guard and the staff and nurses at East Cooper Medical Center ICU! They were all wonderful and brought me back from a life threatening case of Adrenal Crisis. I hope you all took me up on my invitation to join our page… please follow and comment if you’d like.

And we’re off! Good bye FL. Hoping on the Gulf Steam to Charleston. Should be there in about three days. Wish us luck!

Another video (I can only post one at a time apparently)… April 11th while we were on a reach instead of downwind. Meaning the wind and swells are coming from the side instead of from behind. Please note that catamarans are not supposed to heel (lean sideways)!

4/12/22 - reach lasted through the night with ever changing wind directions, making it difficult to hold the course without jibing. We were heading for Highborne and had to take all the sails down and motor through, which Rupert did about 4-5am. On the other side, the sea was much more calm (and shallow) and we made good time with just the jib. We put up the main (without turning on the engine) just before passing Nassau. Then on a broad reach with rather rough seas. It was pretty cold yesterday and today. Last 3am watch with a beautiful almost full moon.

- 4/10/22 - stayed in Clarence Harbor another day waiting for the wind to clock around. Saw a cargo/transport ship come into the tiny town, otherwise a quiet day.
- 4/11/22 - left Clarence Harbor at about 7:30am. Winds pretty strong and still not a great direction so we’re on a reach. Saw a pod of dolphins right beside us, jumping all the way out of the water! Unfortunately they didn’t stick around for pictures…

4/9/22 - anchored in Clarence Harbor at about 6:30am after a night of motor sailing. Yesterday was the first day we turned on the motor since we left the CYOA dock. It was very light wind and we needed to be sure to get here before the predicted storm. Nothing yet except some occasional lightning in the distance. Our one day to imbibe a bit since we were planning to stay a couple of days.

4/8/22 - stopped at a deserted Bahamian island (East Plana) for lunch (Mahi sandwiches.. yum!) so we can arrive in Clarence Harbor after first light tomorrow rather than in the dark tonight.

April 7, Mahi-mahi!

April 6, 2022 on a reach and putting a couple of reefs in the sails. That makes the sails smaller… good to do in high winds!
