The parakeet rangers of Karasabai, Guyana are protecting the endangered sun parakeet around their village. They climb trees to check on the health of the chicks and patrol the area to keep poachers out (video below of tree climber examining wild chicks). This nest is the first confirmed video (we believe) of wild sun parakeets in their natural range. Congratulations parakeet rangers! You can see them at work and see this species by vising their village - they love to give tours as people from all over the world come to see this wonderful bird.

The Parakeet Rangers of Karsabai graduated last week from a Tree Climbing and Parrot Conservation Workshop in their village and here you see them climbing their first ever sun parakeet nest - which could be the first every by the scientific and conservation community. They are looking at a video of the depths of the cavity that the climber up top is recording with a cable camera. It was not an active cavity and had only had insects and a snake skin. We give thanks to all our partners - USFWS, USAID, and especially the USFS that provided two excellent climbing instructors, Jessica Ilse and Victor Prado-Marcano. Please join other children and families at the very first Bird Festival in Lethem. We will be joining with One Earth Conservation and the South Rupununi Conservation Society on September 24, 2022 to celebrate the sun parakeet, the red siskin, and the avian life in the Rupununi region of Guyana, and to grow awareness about what each can do to keep these birds flying free.

There is a land of many waters, called Guyana, from which flows the tremendous beauty of many peoples and parrots into our consciousness. Members of the Parakeet Rangers from Karasabai will be traveling this week to a parrot conservation workshop (see flyers below - there are still some slots open for those who might want to attend via zoom and work in the Guiana Shield area - contact One Earth Conservation here or the University contact on the flyer). After the workshop the conservation team will travel to the village of Karasabai for a tree-climbing workshop led by the USFS. Many thanks to them and all our partners, which include the USFWS, USAID, the Centre for the Study of Biological Diversity, the Guyana Tourism Agency, and most especially, Karasabai village.

Sun parakeets are "Freedom Birds" who liberate us because they are a mighty bird that inspires our admiration, imagination, and commitment. The way they dare to survive - loudly, boldly, and despite dramatic pressure from the pet bird trade - demands our attention. We imagine that if they can fly free, so might we. The counting team celebrated our last night together after 11 days of surveying the parakeet and each said what the experience had meant to them. Cain (pictured bottom right with the rest of the rangers) said it best. I need the parakeets. I need freedom.

The Parakeet Rangers just finished 11 hard days of counting parrots for the annual survey. They camped, hiked, boated, ATVed, and hiked some more. Congatulations for counting the parrrots, because they count on you!
