What to Pack When Traveling to Montana || Packing List for Any Season
Best Things To Do In Montana & Our Airbnb - www.mountforgemontana.com
Since we started renting Mount Forge on Airbnb, we have fielded lots of questions from our guests traveling to our cabin about what they should pack on their trip. After taking dozens of trips to Montana myself, I’ve started to get it figured out. A lot of what you’ll need to bring depends on when you plan on traveling. Since I like to do just about everything, I tend to pack for any situation.
Essentials List:
- T-shirts, long & short sleeve
- Sweatshirts & hoodies
- Water resistant outer layer such as a raincoat
- Bathing Suit (for the lake in the summer or the hot springs in the winter)
- Gloves
- Extra changes of socks
- Long johns or thermals
- Hats & beanies, you never know which will be useful
- Winter jacket (not needed in summer unless you’re hiking at higher elevations)
- Wool socks (same as winter jacket)
- Tennis shoes or sneakers are important for most activities
Hiking List:
- Hiking boots
- backpack
- Insect repellent
- First Aid kit
- Reusable water bottles & a LifeStraw or similar water-treatment supplies
- Bear spray
Lake Life List:
- Sunglasses
- Sunblock, but also SPF chapstick is super underrated
- A long sleeve shirt that breathes well
Other Items:
- Portable phone charger,
- Cash
- A map of the area (or download a region on Google Maps)
The weather in Montana can change quickly, so no matter what the forecast says in the morning, you can find yourself wishing you packed way more (or less) any day.

National Bison Range - Get Close To American Bison In The Wild On A Montana Safari
The National Bison Range is a must-see attraction when you're in this region of Montana. We went here on our way to the Missoula Airport after leaving for Mount Forge. There's a road that loops the entire range that takes about 2 hours and you are guaranteed to see tons of wildlife. There are a few trails you can get out and hike on around the loop as well for some different views. There is a bison roundup in early October every year where the Bison are nowhere to be found, but as long as you're in before then you will have an unbelievable time. We've seen elk, mule deer, bears, and tons of bison up close. It's the closest thing you'll get to an African Safari right here in Montana.
Glacier National Park Snowshoeing - Rocky Point Hike in Two Feet Of Snow Around Lake McDonald
Glacier National Park in the winter is a completely different world. We decided to adventure up there one day to check it out and give a shot at snowshoeing. We bought snowshoes the night before at the Cabela's in Kalispell and really didn't know what we were getting into. The snow was about 1-2 feet deep through the whole trail. Although it was only about 3 miles round trip, the snow made it way harder than we were expecting. Mostly that's just because we're not in great shape and we've never gone snowshoeing before. Once we started to figure it out it ended up being a blast! Nicole fell and got stuck in the snow, my snowshoe broke, and we got to see an amazing view. The trail wraps around Lake McDonald and although it was snowing like crazy we still could see pretty decent. It was a great experience and we can't wait for our next winter trip to Montana to go snowshoeing again!
Skiing Whitefish Montana - Amazing Snowboarding & Skiing Trip to Whitefish Mountain Resort Montana
Whitefish Mountain Resort is a must see if you're staying at Mount Forge in the winter time. If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, you will not be disappointed here. There are stunning views of Whitefish Lake and Glacier National Park from the summit. Not to mention the 3000+ acres, 105 runs, and 4 terrain parks, and summit lodge.
We went on a Thursday and it couldn't have been any more perfect. There were zero lines all day at any of the lifts and the snow was amazing. The staff is very friendly and informed. We had so much fun riding this mountain. They even have a ticket option for beginner skiers like Nicole where you pay a fraction of the cost to access the lower lifts and easy slopes. We can't wait for our next Mount Forge trip in the winter to go again!
Avalanche Lake | Glacier National Park | Amazing Hike
For anyone whose been to Glacier National Park, one of the most popular trails is the hike to Avalanche Lake. It's one of the most accessible, but also most beautiful hikes in the park. Starting at the Trail of the Cedars you work your way up through some beautiful wooded scenery to the unreal looking scenery of the lake. This hike is a must see and a perfect option if you have limited time in Glacier National Park!
Polson Farmers Market
Cherry pie is a pie with a cherry filling baked in it. Cherry pie is usually made of tart rather than sweet cherries. Out in Montana they use the glorious Flathead Lake cherries in these pies. We went to the Polson Farmers Market to get ourselves some produce and I made sure to snag myself a Walkin' Around Pie.
