Storytime! Did you know Arrowtown almost wasn't Arrowtown?

In the very early days of colonial settlement of the region, Jack Tewa (a Māori shearer working for William Rees), found gold in the Arrow River.

Soon after Jack's discovery, a group of miners had their own eureka moment and it was William (Bill) Fox who took credit for the discovery. The ragged new 'town' that grew beside the river was first known as 'Fox’s Rush' and then 'Fox's'.

Bill Fox was a contentious character whose claim of being the legitimate gold discoverer was commonly up for debate. William Rees named the river the 'Arrow' after a river of the same name in his native homeland of Wales.

The town then became know as 'The Arrow' and then later Arrowtown, which we know it by today.
