🍎 Today's sundown marks the start of a new year (Year 5785) in the Luni-solar calendar (Hebrew Calendar). Rosh Hashanah is a two day-long Jewish festival observed to commence the Hebrew new year.

This festival celebrates the creation of the World and is a time for self-reflection. Rosh Hashanah also marks the beginning of ten days of repentance, which culminates with the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur.

Kochi (Cochin) became a colony of Portugal, in the year 1503, making it the first colony of Europe in India. In this same year, this church was built with a wooden structure, within the Fort Emmanuel (present day Fort Kochi neighborhood), and it was dedicated to St. Bartholomew.

After undergoing reconstruction in the year 1516, this church was renamed as 'Santo Antonio church', dedicating it to the patron saint of Portugal, Santo Antonio (St Antony).

Initially, this was a Roman Catholic church, but in the year 1663, when Cochin was colonized by the Dutch, who were predominantly Protestants, it was converted into a Protestant church.

Subsequent to the British colonization of Cochin, in the year 1795, the Dutch surrendered this church to the Anglican Church.

Following the independence of India From the British, the congregation of the Church of South India (CSI) took over this church in the year 1949.

Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, who discovered the sea route from Europe to India in the year 1498, succumbed to Malaria disease on the Christmas Eve of 1524 during his third voyage to India. Initially, he was laid to rest inside this church but fourteen years later, his mortal remains were moved to Jeronimos Monastery situated in Lisbon, Portugal, hence this church is commonly known as 'Vasco Da Gama Church'.

Erstwhile, the Paliam palace used to be the seat of the Paliath Achans, who were prime ministers to the Cochin princely state (Kingdom of Cochin).

In appreciation of Paliath Achan's service for helping them conquer Cochin from the Portuguese in 1663 AD, the Dutch renovated the Palace building and gifted it to the Paliam family and there's the reason why the palace is an amalgamation of Kerala and Dutch architectural styles.

Considering the Paliam family's historical importance, the Government of Kerala has declared the Paliam Palace as a Heritage Monument under the Muziris Heritage Project.

The Project conserved the monument and converted it into a palace history museum, and it chronicles the historical records, letters of the family and important events in the palace.

While this Naalukettu structure located within the same complex as the palace used to be the residential wing of the women of the Paliam family. Today, this structure is being maintained as a heritage museum.

The Thoppumpady Bridge, also known as The Old Harbour Bridge is an iconic landmark of Kochi, which was constructed in 1938, under the supervision of British Engineer, Robert Bristow.

This bridge, which connects Thoppumpady to the Wellingdon Island in Kochi, is an engineering marvel because the middle portion of this bridge could be lifted to create a passage for the ships that were entering and leaving the harbour, hence it used to be known as 'The London Bridge of Kochi'.

This 133 year old bridge in Kozhikode was given a facelift in connection with the 75th Independence day of India, because this bridge has played a vital role in the freedom struggle.

The bridge, which was constructed in 1883, became the major link between Chaliyam and Kozhikode once it was commissioned.

The British engineers who constructed it had predicted that it would not last no longer than 1989. However, the Feroke bridge is still carrying heavy traffic.

A rail bridge came up parallel to the bridge in the 1920s. It had survived a bomb blast during the freedom movement.

Later, another rail bridge was constructed, and the old one was dismantled in 2002.

This Jewish synagogue situated in North Paravur, Kerala, manifests the bygone days of Kerala, when Jews were still a part of its society, and economy. Although, Jews were an integral part of Kerala's history for about two millennia, they started migrating en masse to their promised land, Israel, which was formed in 1948.

An excavation that was conducted within the premises of this synagogue, led to the discovery of an older synagogue, which existed here, before this one was built in 1615, conveying that an active Jewish settlement existed here, even before the commissioning of this present synagogue.

This Jewish synagogue is a pure amalgamation of Jewish synagogue architecture, and the architecture of Kerala, and this is evident from the long passages, and Padipura (gate house from Kerala architecture) in this Jewish synagogue.

Then, the seat of the Rabbi, and the place for the male worshipers, was the lower storey, while the inner part of the upper storey was meant for the female worshipers.

Following the en masse emigration of the Jews from Kerala, during the 20th century, this Jewish synagogue fell into an abandoned state. Later, this structure was renovated by under the Muziris heritage project, and now, it is being maintained as a Jewish heritage museum, which exhibits the bygone era of Jews, who once resided in this neighborhood.
