History about the world famous Huderbadi Irani Chai

:Irani chai in Hyderabad is today ubiquitous and has been from about a century. It is one part of the city’s culture, brought here via Iranian migrants.

Irani chai, which has immense cultural significance, was cultivated and created for us by Iranians who came to our city about a century ago.

From what I've learnt, this migration took place in the early 20th century, mostly from the Yazd province in Iran (for nothing else but economic reasons).

Those Iranians came to Karachi, Bombay (by sea) and then to Hyderabad.

It was easier for them to acclimatize here given that the spoken language was (Dakhni Urdu) and the official languages of Hyderabad-Deccan state (ruled by the Asaf Jahi dynasty/Nizams were Persian and later Urdu).

Irani chai is simply called so because of the cafes are run by Iranians. Ironically, people in Iran drink black tea.

The slow boiled (sweet) milk and decoction, which is mixed half and half, is today native to Hyd.

Back between the 70s-90s these cafes were popular hangout spots for students who for hours would discuss politics.

Grand Hotel at Abids, started in 1935, is the oldest running Irani cafe and restaurant here.

Joseph's Cathedral, situated in Gunfoundry, is one of the most remarkable cathedrals in Hyderabad. This Roman Catholic Cathedral belongs to the Archdiocese of Hyderabad and is named after 'Saint Joseph', the father of 'Lord Jesus'. The construction of St. Joseph's Cathedral began in 1869 by Fr. Antonio Tagliabue, but the entire construction was only completed in 1872 under the direction of Fr. Luigi Malbreti. It was only in 1875, on the Eve of Christmas, when St. Joseph's Cathedral finally opened for the flocks of devotees. The cathedral's Italian architectural designs and the gigantic bells d on the top of the cathedral will leave anyone mesmerized. Many famous celebrities have also visited this great cathedral over the years. Christians and even non-Christians come to visit this cathedral, especially during Christmas time and on 'Good Fridays'. People from all over the world come to this cathedral to explore and revel in its architectural and spiritual magic.

Karachi Bakery, Hyderabad (1953)

The bakery was founded by Sri Khanchand Ramnani in 1953, with the first outlet in Moazzam Jahi Market, in the old city of Hyderabad.

Ramnani, a Sindhi, arrived in India from Karachi, along with his sons Hansram and Ramdas and their families, post the partition.

Did you know - The city of Hyderabad was founded by the Qutb Shahi sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 CE. It was built around the Charminar, which formed the centerpiece of the city. Hyderabad became an important trading centre for diamonds and pearls, and a centre for culture.
