North`s Chiangmai - My Story

I love history, art, nature and people. I've travelled to over 51 countries in the world, and counting so I know a thing or two about what do people want when landing in a new city and how to get the most out of it. I travelled here a while back and instantly fell in love with this city. So I decided to move here and make Chiangmai my new home. During the past few yea

rs, I went to countless numbers of museums, galleries, nature hikes, joining tons of activities and workshops. As a result, I accidentally become the so-call "local expert” among friends, if anyone in my circle decided to visit Chiangmai they would likely to give me a call first :)

Recently, I'm so fortunate enough to become friend with many REAL local experts: University professors, museum & gallery curators, local artists etc, so as a result, I've been invited to many one-of-a-kind trips and heard many amazing stories that only the insiders know. So I'm really want to share those experiences with you, with all the blessing from those passionate working professionals who wish their knowledge passed-on to the much wider audiences - the curious ones - like you! This is my passion, to entertain, to educate, to ensure that you have a great time. I'm not just a tour guide but a friend. My services go beyond the end of the trip, as I really wish you to love Chiangmai as much as I do, and maybe one day call this city your new home as well. A very warm welcome to North''s Chiangmai. Your new friend North

Monica C'e wrote this in her blog after attending "Lanna Talismanic Tour - Spiritual Traditions and Beliefs" in 12 July.

"Chiang Mai never ceases to amaze, especially if one has an open heart and mind to welcome opportunities to learn about the local culture. For some time now I have been following on Facebook North's Chiangmai, a local historian who periodically offers cultural tours to learn more about particular aspects of the capital of the Lanna kingdom. Taking the opportunity of a visit by a fellow university student together with her father and son, I asked North's for an extra date on its tour entitled 'Lanna Talismanic Tour - Spiritual Traditions and Beliefs', a unique opportunity to visit the extraordinarily rich private collection of Prof. Wiluck Sripasang, one of the foremost experts on Lanna culture. Let me write that it was an exceptional experience. For a couple of hours, the professor was at our complete disposal, providing detailed explanations, ready to answer every question and establishing an empathetic relationship with young Lucas, who proved to be the most curious and ready to ask many questions. Professor Wiluck's Lanna-style house houses the collections in various rooms.

First we met the professor in his study after introductions he asked each of us what we were most interested in and based on our answers we started the tour from the amulet room. An extraordinary collection divided into various showcases according to type and style. Some headdresses used by shamans are also kept here, adorned with anmali bones or tiger tusks; on one is the skull of a monkey that when worn allows one to be possessed by a spirit. Another display case contains some talismans that are actually deformed deer antlers. In the sense that normal antlers are not used, but only deformed ones because they contain a special energy. Also very beautiful are the ivory talismans, some very elaborate. There is of course no shortage of phalluses in the collection, which are attributed with the ability to protect against gunfire. Many of the talismans in the Lanna tradition are attributed the power to charm and attract loved ones. Once the visit to the talisman room was over, the professor took us on a tour of the collection of textiles and cloth objects divided into types according to ethnic groups of origin.

The collection belongs to the professor's wife, whom we met briefly afterwards. Part of the collection is dedicated to Princess Dara Rasmi last Princess Lanna, one of the brides of Rama V. In particular, we were all struck by the dress that belonged to the princess's daughter, who died at the age of three.

Another room is dedicated to the collection of swords and daggers for both ceremonial and combat use. Particular workmanship is evident in the scabbards, some in wood, others in ivory or silver.

The last collection is dedicated to Yantra cloths, with traditional designs normally reproduced in sacred tattoos. In this case, power is transmitted by contact with the cloth. The collection includes some antique pieces and some more recent ones. Sealing the friendly atmosphere created with the host was the professor's gesture of giving young Lucas one of the fabrics, of great value, as a present, inviting him to carry it with him at all times. As a final stop, Professor Wiluck led us to the tea ceremony room but without performing the ceremony. He explained that it is customary to have breakfast here at five in the morning. There is an extraordinarily large collection of teapots and cups, but also a large coffee mocha stands out.

Before ending the visit, each of us is given a talisman representing a man and a woman embracing, symbolising universal love. After saying goodbye to the professor, we reached the restaurant of the Lanna ricebarn resort together with our guide North. After a lunch in true Lanna style before leaving, one last surprise awaits us. North takes us upstairs where there is a collection belonging to the owner of the resort. These are mostly work tools, but also typical decorations normally placed on the roofs of Lanna houses.

We spent a few hours immersed in the culture that has characterised the life, history and art of this area and which is still present and alive in modern Chiang Mai.

I really recommend this tour organised by North, I also invite you to follow her page to find out about the other tours I am also planning to join."

I had an amazing day exploring the Tai Lue traditional costumes! I was particularly fascinated by the women's skirts and jackets, with their vibrant colors and meaningful patterns. One of the most significant patterns on the women's skirts is the "water wave" design, symbolizing masculinity and life-giving protection, much like the mythical Naga - The great snake, the god of the river.

In the household, women are considered the head of the family, while outside, men take care of them. This tradition is reflected in the silver belts and decorations made by men for women, especially for unmarried daughters. At night, these daughters wear belts with unique bells crafted by their fathers. Each bell has a distinct sound, allowing parents to know their daughter's whereabouts inside the house.

The skirt patterns also showcase prosperity, depicting elements like vegetables from the garden and animals around the home, all surrounded by water, symbolizing a rich and meaningful life.

I had the chance to see a 100-year-old piece from the best collection in the Lanna Kingdom, and it was a true highlight. Don't miss out, come and see this wonderful collection.

One last fascinating tradition is that when a Tai Lue woman knows that her life is nearing its end, she would prepare a very colorful shirt and skirt, often her masterpiece. On her last day, she would wear that attire, and everything is cremated with her body. This is to ensured that her spirit departs with all the prosperity and elements of her household, symbolized on her skirt.

The exhibition opens every day from 10:00-17:00 👍😊 until 21 July at Jing Jai Market https://maps.app.goo.gl/FyZ7vH9LeZbjTfEF7

I was mentioned in a news article about Songkran (The Independent, UK newspaper). Lucie Grace wrote such a wonderful piece about her Songkran experience here in Chiangmai.

With Thailand’s new year celebration now on Unesco’s ‘Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage’, Lucie Grace was keen to experience the street parties in her adopted home – but she discovers there’s more to the festival than just water

I am reposting a review from my guest on 10th January. ❤️❤️❤️ I love what I do. 🙏😍

"After recently, visiting the beautiful city of Chiang Mai, I can not say enough about our guide, a young woman named North.
North brought the history of this incredible city to life in such an enlightened, amusing, and educational way.
It was a delight to join her in museums and temples. The time flew by as her stories made the old Kings and royalty so real. Their intelligence and wisdom to create such a vision of a magical and prosperous city, may not have been so clear without Norths guidance.
The only “issue”which was simply amusing, is how many other tourists tagged along with our group to hear what she was saying.
I cannot recommend her enough many thanks," Julie Boerhof

'Roasted Buffalo Skin', the famous Lanna party snack! Made by burn a piece of Buffalo skin on a fire, scrape off the burn bits then hammer it to make it chewable!!!🔨😅

Today I got to try this for the first time and surprisingly it is very yummy! Wonderful aroma, nice chewy texture, it's similar to beef jerky but a lot softer and not salty. ❤️😉

You should definitely try this one out! Lanna party snack made with love and hammer! 😁👍🔨

🌟 Step into History 🌟

🕰️ Today I host a historical tour for a special person, Lucy Leonowens, the great-great-grandchild of Anna Leonowens, the English teacher of the young King Rama the 5th of Thailand. From the well-known movie (Anna and the King, 1999)

👑 Lucy Leonowens doesn't only carries a remarkable family legacy but also possesses a precious relic from the past—a ring, a cherished gift from King Rama the 4th to Anna Leonowens in appreciation of her dedicated service.

🗺️ What a historical journey! 🌏

Seeing Bangkok in a totally new light!
Today we had the pleasure to join an excellent tour by our tour guide friend 'Ai' who was also an archaeologist and a certified Thai chef!

This super popular tour uniquely combines sightseeing by Tuk Tuk, a walking tour and street food testing all in one journey!

With Ai's deep knowledge from her archaeology background, she explained to us in detail how Bangkok was originally built with a grand master plan which led to the modern-day Bangkok that we know and love.

Throughout the journey, we saw the details of Ai's story unfolding in front of our eyes. Her expert knowledge of Bangkok art & culture added a new level of understanding to all the wonderful places we visited on the day.

Even though we're originally from Bangkok Ai's tour is still blown our minds! Today she surprised us with many hidden gems of the old town of Bangkok and filled our belly to the brim with many yummy local delicacies. 🤤

This is also a great tour for any foodies. As we were walking through a lively fresh market, we saw how fresh ingredients were transformed into many Thai masterpieces that we got to sample.

Our highlight of the day was the most delicious Pad Thai ever! - our lunch at a Michelin restaurant, what a gastronomic witchcraft! 😁

We wholeheartedly recommend Ai's tour to anyone who visits Bangkok. This 4-hours magical journey will transform your perception of Bangkok. Best Bangkok tour ever in my opinion! 😊❤️👍

📢 Hey there, amazing fans of Lanna's History! 🌟

As I sit down to reflect on the incredible journey we've embarked on over the past three years, I can't help but feel a mix of emotions. Today, I had the most challenging yet fulfilling day I've ever experienced. Let me share it with you!

Not only was it a day filled with capturing the attention of our wonderful 7-year-old customers (which is no easy task, let me tell you!), but it was the way they approached me with their genuine and innocent questions that left me momentarily stunned each time. Their curiosity knows no bounds, and it's truly remarkable.

Engaging with these young minds is an absolute joy. Their straightforward and pure inquiries never fail to bring a smile to my face. It's incredible how their innocent minds can spark such profound thoughts and conversations.

But let's not forget the most important detail—they are super cute! 💖 Their enthusiasm, bright eyes, and contagious laughter fill every moment with joy and remind me why I love what I do so much.

Here's to many more days of laughter, exploration, and growth with our little ones. They are the future, and together, we can make a positive impact on their lives.

With heartfelt appreciation,
📚✨
