The new airport in Tulum

Tulum's airport has been in the works for years and has even changed locations where it was planned to be. Construction has now begun in earnest and according to the builders on the site, things are at the 50% mark. It might not look like it from the pictures below, but there was a lot of prep work and just structural work that needed to be done first. Tulum's airport (officially known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport) is due to open at the end of the year. The first commercial flights are planned for January 2024 and it is estimated that the airport will be fully occupied by May 2024.

The Tulum airport project was built by the Mexican Ministry of Defense and has a price tag of 3.2 billion pesos ($182 million).

Where will the airport of Tulum be located?

The Tulum airport will be south of Tulum near Muyil (Muyil is where there are ruins and also access to the Sian Ka'an reserve). The designated distance of the airport to downtown Tulum is about 34 km (21 miles) and about 40 km (24 miles) to the hotel area of Tulum.
This means that transportation times to Tulum's downtown area will take about 25 minutes and 30-35 minutes to Cancun's hotel area. This will greatly shorten the two hour time from Cancun Airport to Tulum. Currently the best way to get to Tulum is by flying into Cancun airport and taking a bus or private transfer to Tulum.

What will the airport terminal in Tulum look like?

The airport of Tulum was built on 1200 dunams of land (2965 dunams). Next to the airport there will also be a military base. The terminal will have 13 gates for international and domestic flights. The structure will be built to withstand a category 5 hurricane. It will have the latest technologies for landing and navigation systems.

The airport will be connected to highway 307 and also to the Maya train.

Las Coloradas, on the Yucatan Peninsula, is a special place in Mexico 🇲🇽 due to its special pink water.

The water gets its pink hue due to the combination of three main factors, which explain this natural phenomenon:

1. High concentration of salt - it is even higher than in the sea.

2. Halophilic microorganisms - also called the Lobebacteria, are small bacteria that multiply in oversaturated saline environments and in turn produce reddish pigments.

3. Sunlight - the stronger the light, the greater the enhancement of the colors that paint the area.

It is important to mention that the shades are not uniform throughout the pool area. There is a combination of different colors that can be seen. In addition to the beautiful shade of pink, these range from brown to blue, green or even red.

For those who are interested, there is a weekly trip to the Pink Lakes every Wednesday with tourists from around the world 🌎

Xcaret Park

A visit to Xcaret is one of the most beautiful experiences you can enjoy in the Riviera Maya area.

An ecological park that is amazing in its beauty and is all inclusive
Tigers, flamingos, butterflies, aquariums, a huge 100-meter observation tower overlooking the entire area, a horse show, a spectacular final show about Mexican culture (7:00 p.m.), the park is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. throughout the day.

The park's nature-based attractions include a river that runs through a Mayan village, an underground concrete opening where people can swim and snorkel with a life jacket. Near the bay there are leisure activities on the beach, snorkeling, sea trekking and snorkeling on the nearby reefs or swimming with dolphins. The park also has a nesting site for turtles in the coral reef aquarium. Near the entrance there is an area for swimming pools. The park also has a bird pavilion, a butterfly pavilion, a bat cave, an orchid and bromeliad greenhouse, a jaguar island and a deer sanctuary.

The cultural attractions include a replica of a Mayan village with real artisans at work, a Mexican cemetery, a museum, an equestrian show, a Mesoamerican ball game, an open theater with pre-Hispanic dance performances, the flying men of Papantla Gran Tlachco (a theater with a capacity of 6000 people ) where the Mesoamerican ball game is represented, as well as a meeting of two worlds, the Mayan and the Spanish, and the presentation of a number of Mexican folklore dances. Other demonstrations of Mexican traditions include the Day of the Dead celebration and the Travesía Sagrada Maya, an annual ritual in which the Maya would cross the sea from Xcaret and Playa del Carmen to Cozumel to pay homage to the moon goddess Xcel. The modern version is a re-creation of this ritual done in late May to early June.

The park also has Temascal and a spa, there are 11 restaurants, changing rooms, souvenir and handicraft shops, as well as an adjacent all-inclusive resort hotel.

However, one of the most common questions when buying tickets is how convenient it is to buy the Xcaret Plus ticket or if the basic ticket is more than enough.
Considering that the economic difference between the two cards is about 30 dollars on average, it is recommended to purchase the Xcaret Plus card.
With both tickets you can enjoy over 50 natural and cultural attractions, with the Xcaret Plus ticket you will have access to the plus area which includes changing rooms, toilets and private lockers, which will undoubtedly be a great convenience during the day.
In addition, you can enjoy a buffet meal with beer included, as well as coffee and fresh water limited to the time of the meal.

You should also remember that there are restaurants that can only be accessed if you purchase the Xcaret Plus card, and that if you choose the basic card, everything you consume inside the park will really be very expensive.
Xcaret restaurants offer an international buffet, Mexican food, a buffet specializing in cuts of meat and fast food service.

Price including transportation from the hotel in Playa del Carmen:

Regular Xcaret: $130 USD per person
Xcaret Plus: $170 USD per person

Transportation from Cancún:

Regular Xcaret: $140 USD per person
Xcaret Plus: $180 USD per person

The ancient ruins of Tulum 😍🇲🇽

The ruins of the royal Mayan city of Tulum are located on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea like a balcony in the state of Quintana Roo, in the Riviera Maya.

Tulum is one of the most visited archaeological sites in all of Mexico (the third in particular) and together with Teotihuacán in Mexico City, Chichén Itzá in Yucatán (the two most visited), Palenque in Chiapas or Monte Albán in Oaxaca that are also among the most important in Mexico.

The history of Tulum

Tulum means "wall" in Mayan, and the reason for its name is given by the fortified complex that surrounds the city. Later it was renamed Zamá ("dawn") because its direction is towards the east where the sun rises, and it became the center of worship for a deity known as "the god who descends".

The area has been inhabited since at least the 6th century AD. The time of greatest prosperity is between the 13th century and the middle of the 15th century, when the arrival of the Spanish begins with the decline of Tulum.

The importance of Tulum in pre-Hispanic cultures lies in its commercial enclave, which offered a platform and refuge for navigation along the coast, connecting Central America with the Yucatan and the Gulf of Mexico.

The arrival of the Spaniards in Tulum was preceded by the shipwreck of the ship Santa María de la Barca in 1511 due to a storm that capsized it on the beach. Of the survivors, only two managed to continue living after contact with the indigenous, Jerónimo de Aguilar and Gonzalo de Guerrero, who were able to adapt to life with the Mayans after being imprisoned, enslaved and taken to Tulum. Seven years later, Juan de Grialva, leaving Cozumel to inspect the various coastal settlements, spotted Tulum, amazed at its size and the height of the buildings. The chroniclers compared it to Seville because of the high tower of the Mayan city, but by decision of the captain the ships did not dock.

At that time, Tulum was experiencing a flourishing stage, configuring itself as a maritime enclave of coastal trade. Hernán Cortés's offer tempted Jerónimo de Aguilar, aware of the need to create translators for negotiations during the occupation.

Gonzalo de Guerrero, married to the daughter of a Mayan ruler, not only refuses but continues his work of training the indigenous people to resist the Spanish attacks, and is nicknamed El Rangado, he will be called the father of Mestizaje. Gonzalo de Guerrero would die years later in the Oloa River (Honduras) fighting against the Spanish.
