What a beautiful church that anchors the western side of downtown!

On October 29, 1929, the day of the worst stock market crash in US history, ground was broken on this church. On October 30, 1930 members locked the door of the old church and walked together to this new one.

It was inspired by Notre Dame in Paris.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of at rooftop's space. It was fun! They had adult beverages, real food, movie theater snacks, and plenty of games to play before the movie started. They have movies scheduled daily through the end of the year. I can’t wait for an upcoming date night with Mr. ExploreFWTX at a rooftop movie.  😉

Did you know that Fort Worth was one of the original Carnegie libraries? Fort Worth’s first library opened in 1901 thanks to a $50,000 donation from wealthy philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. By the late 1920’s the need for additional space became critical, but a bond issue for a larger library failed. When funds became available through the Public Works Administration in 1933, library supporters pushed to secure money for a new building. After years of wrangling with the city council and the PWA, the Carnegie Library was demolished, and the new library project was completed in June 1939 at a construction cost of $370,688 and a project cost of $390,861.

A new central library opened in 1978 at the current location. The 1939 library was demolished in 1990 and the location was returned to the ownership of the Sarah Gray Jennings estate in 1980 (she had provided the location for the Carnegie library under the stipulation that the land always be a library). Currently that location is a parking lot.

Did you know that Fort Worth is the 1931 birthplace of the Official State Music of Texas - Western Swing? It was created by Bob Wills and Milton Brown and their Light Crust Doughboys band in a ramshackle dancehall 4 miles west of downtown at the Crystal Springs Dance Pavilion. The pavilion was destroyed by a fire in 1966.

Did you know that during the Civil War, Fort Worth suffered from shortages of money, food, and supplies causing the population to drop as low as 175? Hard to believe now given that Fort Worth is the 13th biggest city in the nation!

One of the things people typically comment on during walking tours is how flat Fort Worth is. This has actually turned out to be a huge benefit to some of my tours lately. I have had a few request for handicapped tours, specifically for people in wheelchairs. By downtown being so flat it is very easy to accommodate the requests. The only rerouting on the tours is to work around the broken up sidewalks (seriously fix the damn downtown sidewalks already). If you or a family member is in a wheelchair and interested in a tour please send me a DM. I want to show you my Fort Worth  😊

I have been rather quiet on here lately but it was for a good reason. To celebrate my Dad's 80th we took a road trip through Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. We saw some truly beautiful things and parts of this country that are mostly untouched. As we were going through Wyoming we came across another Hell's Half Acre.

This "half acre" covers approximately 320 acres. Flint arrows and buffalo bones have been found here. Today, it is fenced off so you can only view it from safe designated areas. It is a very unique piece of natural beauty.

Y'all it is getting HOT. Seriously what happened to spring?!? It feels like it lasted for a very short minute. Normally I wait until June to move my tours to 6pm due to the heat but this year I'm moving them early. Starting this weekend all tours will be at 6pm.

In the meantime please drink your water and give each other grace.

It is no secret that I love and going there makes for an easy and fun date night. Last time I was there Brandon and hooked me up with their newest concoction the "Heshima". The spring of rosemary gave the drink an unexpected twist that was delightful. Have you tried it yet?

This weekend I’m not hosting any tours. Instead I will be visiting with friends. We are all scattered around the country and the last time our group got together my face hurt for days afterwards from laughing. Yes this photo is me playing in a pit of corn after spending hours wandering through a corn maze! It was easily one of the best weekends I’ve ever had and I’m over the top excited to see my friends again. Weekly zooms are not the same as in-person magic. Enjoy your weekend and spend some time with friends who make you laugh to the point of gasping-for-air-crying. Tours will resume next weekend.
