Because I don’t want you finding out at the airport gate.

As of May 7, 2025, TSA is now requiring a REAL ID or passport for all domestic flights in the U.S. So if you’re wondering, do I need a REAL ID to fly in 2025?—this is for you.

Here’s what you need to know, without the confusion:

What is a REAL ID?�It’s a federally approved driver’s license or ID card that meets updated security standards. You’ll see a gold star in the top right corner if yours is compliant.

Flying with a passport?�You’re already covered—even for domestic flights. No REAL ID needed if your passport is valid and with you.

No passport, and your license doesn’t have that star?�You’ll need to get your REAL ID at the DMV before your next flight. Bring original documents (proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of address).

*Requirements vary by state, so check your local DMV site to be sure.

Tip:�Book your DMV appointment now. Walk-ins are still a thing in many places, but lines are long—and summer travel season doesn’t wait for paperwork.
