Step into the fog, where stories linger on the breeze.
At Moratorium, we believe some of the best adventures happen when the weather feels like a secret.
Drizzle gathers on sea-worn rocks, fog curls around ancient trails, and the landscape softens into quiet mystery—still, we wander.
Whether you’re solo or sharing the journey, you’ll find a space to breathe here. A place to listen. To reflect.
Book a retreat for yourself or someone who needs it most. A journey of rest, wonder, and connection awaits.

It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of loss that I share the news of the passing of our beloved Resident Musician, Mick Symmonds. After a courageous battle with cancer, Mick is finally at rest.
Four years ago, when I asked Mick to play accordion for my guests and told you about my idea for Moratorium, he was immediately supportive.
From day one, he was always so supportive and encouraging. Helping me realise a dream of mine that soon became a dream of his.
I am so blessed that I had the last four years working with you and getting to know you and your wonderful spirit. I’ll miss serving you a ginger ale, all our inappropriate jokes and conversations, all the laughter we shared, and all the times we made tourists rock the floor boards in Hunts Store.
I think some of the best moments I had over the past few years were seeing Mick and his granddaughter Chelby, our Operations Assistant now Manager, together at our dinners. Playing accordion and spending time enjoying each others company always made me miss my own grandfather.
I was always so grateful to witness those moments. It made Moratorium all that more special. And today, the fact that we built this with the love of their family, will be a part of our history that lives on forever.
Mick’s smile and light will be missed and I thank him every evening we spent in candlelight showing those from away what we love so much about our hometown.
I love you Mick. I’ll be seeing you again one day. Thank you for being a friend and the best damn accordion man in the world.

Joan Simmonds is one of our talented guides and the Director of the French Shore Historical Society.
She is also an extraordinarily talented embroider and quilter.
Our guests partake in workshops with Joan, in addition to private museum tours, to learn these traditional crafts from the master herself.
She does embroidery and quilting by commission only — wondrous works of art featuring captivating scenes of outport Newfoundland.
Your private beach.
Or well… pretty much.
Just a few steps from your front door, you’ll find this pristine shoreline.
Crouse, formerly called Cap Rouge by the first French fishing fleets, was once adorned with dozens of fishing rooms to store and process cod fish.
Now, the shorelines are empty, hauntingly beautiful, and the perfect place to spend an evening watching the sun dance across the Northeastern peninsula.

A transformative rural wellness experience
The true impact of the cod moratorium has never been fully realised. 1992 marked the end of a five hundred year old economy and began the process of a slow and painful death for Conche and many rural fishing communities across the province.
Our culture, rooted for five generations in the fishery, ultimately faced extinction.
Those born in this period of time, including myself, were the Moratorium Children. We were born into a new reality plagued by uncertainty and perfumed with a deep longing for a past that we were never a part of.
Early adulthood led me far and wide, travelling to many corners of the globe, realising that hope exists everywhere. The longing for my bleeding homeland became stronger than ever.
There is a certain magnetism that exists here in the quiet of the harbour. There is an allure to the weather beaten shores, the paint-chipped fishing stages, and the towering peninsula cliffs. Serenity and stillness surrounds this place, and each time I returned home, I felt a deeper connection to not only the land, but to myself, recognizing the power of Conche with each trip back.
The concept for Moratorium Children was derived by a desire to share the magic of Conche with the rest of the world and to effectively work towards economic resiliency and preservation of our culture and heritage.
Incorporating mindfulness meditation, forest therapy, musical performances, storytelling, and breathtaking peninsula and coastline hiking, Moratorium Children is a journey of reconnection: to your truest self, your spirit, and to the very soul of Newfoundland and Labrador.
You are invited to the Northern Peninsula this summer, to connect your mind, body, and spirit to the essence of Conche’s natural and cultural wonder.
