For those of you who have been following my journey, you know that in my past life, I spent 20 years as a Promotion Manager at Sony Music. I had the full-time job, the steady paycheck, and yes, I saved a lot....

Some moments leave you speechless, like this sunset in Costa Rica. 🇨🇷

I’m actually on the sunrise side of the peninsula right now, but I managed to get some pick clouds and pink reflections off the beautifully turquoise water tonight. This picture doesn’t do it justice at all.

So grateful for the beauty this world holds.

What’s a moment of awe you’ve experienced? 🌅

When I first started traveling, I was terrified I wouldn’t be able to communicate.

Let me save you some stress: don’t waste your energy worrying about this. After many years of travel across Asia, Central America, South America, Mexico, and Europe, I can say with 100% certainty: You’ll be fine.

Here’s what I didn’t realize before I started: English is the international language. As Americans, we’re incredibly lucky it’s our native tongue. While I’ve met travelers from all over—The Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, China, Korea, Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico, and more —they often speak multiple languages, and English is simply expected. Tours, hospitality, and transportation hubs almost always operate in English. You’ll be amazed by how widely spoken it is.

That said, learning a little of the local language goes a long way. A simple “Hello” and “Thank you” show respect and interest in the culture and make a big difference. People appreciate the effort, even if it’s small.

There are a few places where English isn’t as common—Korea and Taiwan were challenging for me—but tools like Google Translate are lifesavers. Pro Tip: Make sure you have data or Wi-Fi since it doesn’t work offline when you need it most.

So, don’t let fear of a language barrier hold you back. If you know English, you’re already set. Go explore!

I began journaling not long after I started traveling.

At first, I understood the general benefits of journaling, but I had no idea how deeply transformative it could be. There’s something powerful about putting pen to paper—or in my case, fingers to keyboard. As you write, you’ll start noticing shifts in how you see the world, how you think, and what truly defines you.

The results might not be immediate—consistency is everything—but over time, you’ll gain clarity about yourself, your values, and what really matters in your life.

So, here’s my challenge to you: dust off that journal tucked away in your nightstand, or open a fresh document, and take the first step toward self-discovery. Remember, your journal is yours—a space free from judgment. Be honest, raw, and unfiltered. Let your thoughts flow, and you might be surprised by what surfaces.

Today, I’m grateful for:

1). The courage to explore.
2). The kindness of strangers.
3). Every breathtaking sunset I’ve been lucky enough to witness.

Year #2 of this crazy journey has come to an end. I still can’t believe that it is real. It feels like it has been 5 minutes and a lifetime all at once. And I feel the same and completely different in the same breath. 24 months ago, my life changed on a dime. I often think back to that day in my living room…...

Let me preface this post by saying that I have been to an orthopedic surgeon in the Phillipines, a dentist in India, and a hospital in Mexico. I am still alive and the services were excellent and affordable.

Travel Fear #3: Fear of Illness.

Of course, this is a valid concern. No one wants to get sick while they are traveling. Being sick while traveling is the worst. I know because I just had Dengue Fever in Mexico. But staying home because of this fear is just irrational. Are you going to hide out and never leave your house because you are afraid to get sick at home? Probably not, so why let this irrational fear stop you from traveling?

Here are some things to consider to put your mind at ease:

1. There are doctors in other countries. Yep! No kidding! All kinds of them. Especially in big cities. But even in the smallest towns you should be able to at least find a clinic. And don’t believe the hype that these doctors are any less educated than those in our home countries. They have been to medical school and they know what they are doing.

2. Pharmacies are everywhere and you can often get the drugs you need without a prescription…not everywhere, but sometimes.

3. If paying for these services is a fear, we will cover that in another chapter, but rest assured that most of the services you may require will be cheaper than what you will likely pay in your home country, especially America. It’s just a fact.

4. Travel insurance is key. Just in case something goes wrong you need to be covered. You wouldn’t drive around without car insurance; don’t travel without travel insurance. This is your security blanket, and it will cover you in the worst situations. Just make sure you do your research and find the policy that is best for you. I use and I love it.

5. Carry a first aid kit with you. Every time I take a hike or do any adventure tours, this comes with me. It has come in handy many times….

The most important thing to remember is that even if something goes wrong, you will be taken care of. People get sick worldwide. Everyone needs medical care at some point so you will definitely be able to find it.

Settling Into Costa Rica: A New Chapter of My Journey

The struggle has been real lately, and I suppose I should have expected that....

People ask me all the time if I feel safe when I travel. My answer, every time, is YES. I feel more safe when I travel than I do at home. And I mean it.

Between the guns, the political divisiveness, the sexual objectification of women that is normalized in America, and the overall feeling of discord, I feel 100% safer everywhere else than I do in my own home country.

Now - I have not been to every country in the world. I am only speaking from my own experiences, but what I have found is that people are overwhelmingly kind, they want to help, and they want to share their experiences and their cultures with you. If you are open to this, and you can let go of the fear-mongering that has been instilled in you from the media and society since birth, then you will likely be happily surprised.

This is not to say that bad things don’t happen. You need to have common sense and exercise normal safety precautions that you would in your everyday life; but honestly, I am much more comfortable walking alone at night in Thailand than I am in Chicago. No disrespect to Chicago - I love Chicago, I am just more on guard in Chicago.

And particularly as a woman, I feel much safer abroad. I don’t feel roving eyes on me like I do when I am home. I have never once had to endure any catcalls and jeering from random men on the side of the street. Not once. Not ever. I can’t even begin to tell you how refreshing it is to walk around without the fear of that happening. And all of you women out there know how embarrassing, degrading, and violating those experiences are. It is exhausting, and at times, it is downright scary.

So no, I do not fear for my safety as a solo female traveler. I take the necessary, common sense precautions that we should all take, I research my lodging and transportation options thoroughly, read all the reviews that I can, and ask for recommendations from trusted sources. I do the work and I use my common sense.

It’s not about being safe; it’s about being smart.
