Today was all about sharing some trail magic on the Ice Age Trail. I met some cool people, pet some cool dogs, and hung out with some super-cool clowns. That’s the beauty of the trail…you never know who you’ll meet. 🫶🏻🥾🍁

Good luck to everyone doing the Mammoth Hike Challenge this October! There’s still time to join the challenge for FREE at www.iceagetrail.org.

And don’t forget to keep the people of southern Appalachia in your thoughts as they continue to dig out after the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

The American Red Cross is giving $10 amazon gift cards to people who donate blood before 10/31. Otherwise, please consider giving to your disaster relief organization of choice. And THANK YOU to everyone who has already donated, you guys rock!!

It’s amazing how much things can change in a week. This was Damascus Virginia last Friday. One Friday later, the town is digging out, building back, and recovering from the devastating floods caused by Hurricane Helene.

Trail Dog & Company sends our love and support to all the first responders, search and rescue personal, firefighters, police officers, civilians, and hikers who stepped up to help Damascus, VA. Your countless efforts continue to inspire and amaze everyone.

Although the Trail Dog October 2024 Women’s Hiking Retreat in Damascus is cancelled, WE WILL BE BACK STONRG IN 2025 to support and celebrate this beautiful trail town.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the disaster relief efforts, please keep the love and donations coming.

Hurricane Helene devastated Southern Appalachia last week. In addition to catastrophic impacts in Asheville, many small mountain towns were decimated. Some are starting to dig out, and others are still completely isolated because their bridges and roads were washed out. Communication is very limited due to continued power outages and no cell service. In addition to a rising death toll, some people are still missing or unaccounted for. These communities need our help.

This footage is of downtown Hot Springs, NC where Trail Dog & Co was supposed to host its Fall women’s hiking retreat this past weekend. The retreat was cancelled due to the storm. I am okay, and all hikers connected with Trail Dog & Co are okay. Thank you for everyone’s care and concern 🫶🏻

All 2024 Appalachian Trail destination hiking trips with Trail Dog & Company have been cancelled due to the devastation.

A lot of you have reached out to see what you can do to help at this point. Here are a couple suggestions:

1. Donate to your disaster relief organization of choice.

2. Donate blood in your local community.

3. Check on your friends and family in impacted areas when communication opens up. Ask directly what they and their town needs? Open your home up to them or those in need.

4. Keep sharing this story. So many people aren’t aware of the hurricane’s impacts to western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southern Virginia because communication is still so limited at this point. Continue to SHARE this story and be an ADVOCATE for our brothers and sisters in southern Appalachia.

5. Donate to The Appalachian Trail at: www.appalachiantrail.org. Consider volunteering on the AT or in impacted trail communities (once safe).

Please continue to pray for, support, and advocate for our trail communities. They need it more than ever.

Stay strong southern Appalachia, we love you. 🩷

What was our FAVORITE THING we did in Theodore Roosevelt National Park last week on vacation?

Hiking the 4.1 mile Caprock Coulee loop in the North Unit.

We started our hike going clockwise, but you can choose your own adventure and go either way. The first mile of the loop boasts dramatic views of the Badlands and the Little Missouri River. You’ll see the River Bend Shelter, which was beautifully constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. It was a great post-hike spot to stop and enjoy a snack (and the view of course)!

The 4.1 mile loop hike took us a little over 2 hours. The National Parks Service rates the trail as moderate and I would agree. We started out hiking slowly, taking in the views and taking way too many pictures. We then kicked it into high gear because there was rainy weather blowing in and we knew we didn’t want to be stuck ice skating on the infamous, slippery Bentonite Clay known to the park.

You’ll see plenty of wildlife, sweeping views, forest views, and coulee views. This trail offers SUCH a variety of landscapes. Highly recommend!! There’s a pit toilet about 2 miles in, and you’ll need to pack out any food and water for the day. There are no water sources on this trail and a decent amount of sun exposure, so plan accordingly to have the best and safest experience.

Happy trails and see you out there!

What’s the best way to avoid the Sunday scaries?

Hiking of course! 🥾🤗

A big kudos to these awesome ladies for putting in some Sunday Funday miles this morning. 💪🏻We got in 3.3 miles and did a shake down on some new gear…and new snacks. Because there’s nothing worse than being on trail and eating a snack that sucks! 😆

Working out all the nuances with your pack, food, and clothing on shorter hikes prior to a destination hiking trip is key. Get comfortable ahead of time so you’re not testing out a new rain jacket, learning a new hydration system, or breaking in new pair of boots or trail runners that hurt your feet. Confidence on trail comes from practice home. 💪🏻

Last week I had the honor of volunteering on The Appalachian Trail with the Konnarock Trail Crew in Virginia. We worked on a relocation project and were able to set 29 pavers, 7 steps, and create 150 feet of new trail.

It was a slow moving project because we encountered obstacles like this monster rock in the middle of our path that had to be relocated. We used rock bars, rock nets, and a maasdam puller to move this beast! 💪🏻🪨The collective power and sheer strength of a trail crew never fails to amaze me.

If you’ve ever thought of volunteering on The AT, do it. You’ll learn a ton, you’ll meet cool people, and you’ll contribute to a truly magical place that can only be experienced first hand. Sure, there are moments of “Type 2 Fun” where you’re cursing the rain, dreaming of a shower, and wondering if your tired legs will have the strength to hike back to camp at the end of the day. But, going to bed each night knowing that I contributed to the preservation of a trail that has given me so much over the years is always worth it. 🫶🏻

Last week I completed my Wilderness First Responder recertification in Illinois. Wow, the last two years have flown by!

What the heck is a Wilderness First Responder you ask?

A wilderness first responder (WFR AKA “Woof-er”) is an individual who is trained to respond to emergency situations in a remote or backcountry setting.
WFRs perform comprehensive physical exams, gather critical patient history, and evaluate vital signs – crucial elements of proficient wilderness medical care.

WFRs administer emergency treatments, manage musculoskeletal injuries, and navigate the intricacies of medical evacuations, all while using limited resources and often times with delayed relief and communication.

Sound like something you’d like to learn more about? Check out and or visit:

www.nols.edu

www.midwestoutdoorskillstraining.com

These wilderness schools also teach wilderness first aid (WFA) which is a great basic tool to have in your tool belt for everyday life and all its oopsies!

Hike confidently with Trail Dog & Company knowing that all guides are WFR certified.

Wishing you safe (and happy) trails this Memorial Day Weekend!

That’s a wrap, Virginia!

Last week was spent doing a complete walk-thru of the itinerary I wrote for the Virginia Women’s Hiking Retreat this Fall. Ladies, get ready, this is a good one!!!

While in VA, I did a hike-thru of the daily logistics, I scouted break spots and lunch spots, and I met with local business owners to introduce Trail Dog & Company.

Highlights of the scouting mission include: the magical ponies of Grayson Highlands, cruising the Virginia Creeper Trail, crossing the Virginia/Tennessee state line, and the amazing friends I met along the way.

A special shout out to: Lightening, B-Dubs, Buck, Janet, and Ty. Thanks for the trail magic! I’ll meet you guys in Maine. You got this! 🥾🔥💪🏻

Havasupai Adventures Day 3 (Part 2): Upon the suggestion of a couple hikers we met in the canyon, we hiked to Fifty Foot Falls in the afternoon on our third day. Everyone raved how the warm, afternoon sun hits the falls perfectly and creates an ethereal glow. They were right, it was truly magical. But as much as I enjoyed Fifty Foot Falls, I loved the journey to get there even more.

Yesterday I had the honor of guiding a private hike with nine fierce ladies on The Ice Age Trail. It was chilly, sunny, and the camaraderie with this crew was instantaneous.

One thing I can never get enough of is the support and positivity that radiates when you get a group of adventure-minded women together on the trail. You guys rocked it! 💪🏻

We picked up litter along the trail (congrats to Deb for the biggest haul). We hiked 4.2 miles, saw a whitetail deer, peeped a couple signs of spring, and even ate ice cream after the hike. My only regret is that I didn’t take more pictures of these lovely ladies. But then again, isn’t that a sign of enjoying life in the moment? Thank you for a beautiful hike ladies! 🫶🏻🍄‍🟫🦌🌲🪺🌿

Day 3 (Part 1) of our Havasupai Adventure: “Yeah, cool, just drop right in,” said the guy taking our picture at Havasu Falls. I didn’t understand what he meant at the time…until I saw the lady worshiping Havasu Falls in the background of our picture. Talk about an epic photobomb! 🤣 Little did I know there’s a whole “thing” on social media with this pose. Priceless!

Day 3 included: A hike to Supai Village for an ice-cold Gatorade, a hike to the famous (and praise worthy 🤣) Havasu Falls, Navajo tacos, an accidental hike to Hidden Falls (probably my favorite spot on this trip), and another intentional hike to Fifty Foot Falls. A special thanks to Randy and Wayne from British Columbia for persuading me hike to Fifty Foot Falls when I really just wanted to be tired and lazy that afternoon. You are right, I didn’t want to miss that.

Day 2 (Part 2): We made it to Beaver Falls! I’m not sure how to describe heaven on earth so I looked up the definition of “Utopia” to describe Beaver Falls. Here’s what Oxford Dictionary said:

“An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect.” Yep, that’s pretty much Beaver Falls. Thank you Mother Nature for creating this Utopia 🫶🏻
