How Pride Can Be Prouder. 1/1
Dear q***r community, allies, and - hopefully - future allies.
Pride has shown many faces this year. It took me a while to wrap my head around Amsterdam Pride 2024. A full week. It was one of those theme park experiences full of highlights and not-so-highlights.
The Homomonument showed me what it can feel like; having the space to be yourself and celebrating it in complete freedom and joy.
Q***r Amsterdam showed me that the struggle to get there is not an easy one and "which battles to choose along the way" and how not to fall apart in parts during this struggle. I admire the various organizations, which stand for equal goals, even if achieving them and fighting for them runs through different paths.***rAmsterdam you are fantastic, important, necessary, heroes. I hope you will keep on getting all the support to follow through with your grand work for our community. Thank you for what you mean and do for me and many of us.
Pride Amsterdam showed me how necessary it is that our Pride celebration remains a celebration of awareness, against stagnation, against 'finish point' thinking. A celebration remains of staying active in our community and above all staying aware and active of those outside. Allies and those who think they are allies. Commit, make room for difference, become mindful of your superpower, and use it for good, to make room for everyone to belong.
The day of the Canal Parade, the national Pride date, and celebration. The day that attracts more people to Amsterdam than Kingsday does.
On this day I no longer expected to run into the old dynamics, the dynamics that became the why of the date shift of the Pride celebrations .
People who antagonized, pushed, and provoked arguments, took space instead of giving it. Engaged in nasty discussions, insulted touches, asked impertinent questions, and were aggressive. All this happened in our places, at our women's bars and street parties. I simply don't want that.
Had all this happened on the Amstelveld - where mostly straight people celebrate Pride every year - we could have walked around it with a bow. But this year..
